Video Transcript for Curt Chrome 2-5/16 Inch Hitch Ball Review

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the CURT Trailer Ball. So this one's gonna be a 2 5/16 inch ball. It's gonna have a capacity of 20,000 pounds. So we do want to match this up with a ball mount that's gonna be able to carry at least that much. So with this ball mount, it's about 21,000 pounds. So we are limiting our ball mount by 1,000, but that's not necessarily a huge deal.

But if you did need to grab a ball mount, just make sure it kinda lines up, 'cause you do need to piece these things together just to make sure that they're all gonna work together. Might as well not limit yourself from right off the bat. Another thing to think about is which ball mount you're gonna pick, but also the thickness. So we wanna make sure that we're gonna have a platform that's at least 3 1/8 of an inch thick. So this one's totally fine.

And then looking down at the shank, we do need to make sure that the hole is going to be an inch and 1/4 in diameter, because that is the diameter of the shank of the ball. Let me take this off real quick. There we go. So as you can see up top there's hardly any play. We really want to line this up and make sure it's the same size, just because if it's any bigger, the shank, it's not going to put the ball mount and any smaller, there's going to be a lot more play.

And we really don't want that. Especially with these really heavy duty balls. We wanna make sure they are nice and snug in there just so we don't have any issues whenever we go down the road. So if you we're to upgrade with a trailer ball, I guess you could get one that's forged and machined out of one single piece of steel. This one's made of steel.

It's gonna be plenty strong, but it has a Chrome finish. The other one's just going to be a little bit stronger. But I really don't think that really matters a whole lot. One thing I would pick up is some grease for this just because there's a lot of grinding action that goes on. And with that grease, we carry here at etrailer, it's just gonna keep this finish looking nice for a little bit longer. When it comes to trailer balls, there's some that are gonna give you an inch or two in rise, so the ball itself will give you a rise. If that's something that you're interested in, you can get that here at etrailer. But this is just your standard 2 5/16 inch ball. And that's basically it for our look at the CURT 2 5/16 inch Trailer Ball..

The Curt ball hitch worked perfectly for my needs. I installed it on a Blue Ox weight distributing hitch that came with an unusually low ball causing my trailer coupler to contact the hitch head. This ball is a bit over 1/2" taller, which solved the problem. I chose this particular one because the flange that seats against the hitch looked the largest out of the offerings, so I figured it would provide some additional strength. Great ball that yielded great results for me.

by:

Shipper lost the order but etrailer shipped me a replacement. Great service

by:

It was one of the few things that gave me enough drop to hook my Truck up to my small utility trailer! hook my Tahoe up to my small utility trailer

by:

Nicely plated and fits well. Without flat spots on the base to hold, I was afraid the ball would slip and turn while I tightened the nut, but I had no problem installing it on the Curt ballmount. It has great capacity, and I have no worries about it safely pulling my boat.

Works well. Has stayed tight and does the job to haul a 4 ton boat and trailer

simple design
and easy use makes this a winner in my books.

This ball mount has served it purpose well. I purchased a new travel trailer that is heavy enough to require a weight distribution hitch when using the factory installed Class III hitch on our Dodge RAM 2500. I decided to upgrade to a Class V hitch combined with this ball mount to take delivery of the TT in order to defer decisions about a WD hitch until the actual load conditions were known. The hour trip home with this setup worked very well. Once the trailer was outfitted I was able to determine the actual tongue weight of the loaded trailer and I decided to purchase an appropriately sized Reese Straight Line WD hitch. However, this ball mount comes in handy for moving the trailer short distances without hassling with the WD system. The purchase experience through etrailer.com was first rate.

by:

No one had a 2 5/16 inch ball in 14000 tow weight. As we had to move our trailer and as I called numerous dealers and was told not available, I reached out to etrailer. They also didn't have it but suggested I go larger in the ball so long as it fit the tow hitch and the shank. It did I'm still using it and am very happy with the product and the quick service and turn around with my order.

by:

Great product, gives me total confidence in my ability to pull my car trailer. etrailer is a great company to deal with.

So far I have pulled my trailer over 10k miles with my ‘16 Ram 2500. The hitch is easy to use and really helped with sway even when empty. Best choice I could have made for my trailer.

by:

Well constructed

by:

Great Ball, works perfectly. The nut is BIG so make sure you have a big enough socket to tighten this monkey up! Put it on the hitch, then put the hitch in your receiver sideways so you can get better leverage to tighten the nut.

by:

Good, solid product. We tow our 15,000 lb boat behind our Ford F-250 using it. You do need a pretty long torque wrench to tighten the nut to specs, and because there are no flats on the ball end, you have little choice but to damage the chrome plating in the throat a big with a pipe wrench as you tighten. But no big deal.

by:

Fit just like the original ones and work great!

by:

For the price I could pass it up.working well towing a 16k dump trailer.

Better than expected

by:

I received everything that I requested in a short time even with the free shipping. The ball mount and the balls I requested and the 2-5/16th ball and the 2" ball were just what I needed. the ball cap for the 2-5/16 ball fit perfect the ball cap for the 2" was really just made for the smaller ball. I would recommend that they make a ball cap for just the 2" ball. Got it to fit but not that well. I will need breaks for my boat trailer after this season and I plan on using etrailer for those parts. will need to call them before I make purchase as Im not sure how to size them up.

by:

I ordered a Class V ball and ball mount with pins. This is for the 2.5 inch heavy duty receiver. I needed a set-up for pulling an emergency services boat that weighs over 18,000 lbs.

I was able to get a set-up rated at 20,000 lbs, in stock. Shipping was fast and quality looks good.

by:

This hitch ball looks good - the chrome finish looks too good to hook a trailer up to and it meets the weight ratings I was looking for, which is clearly stamped on the top of the ball. Now I just have to torque it up to the 450 ft lb spec required as stated on the attached tag and I will be good to go.

by:

We always call etrailer, first, whenever we need anything for our Motor home or our trailer. They are so knowledgeable and supportive, it takes all the worry out of ordering wrong. They even helped us with ordering Thule carrier and cross bars!

Thank You!!!!

by:

Carol, when I have a chance to install the hitch I will. I am waiting on delivery if my hitch. Can I ask you to confirm the nut size on the Curt 2 5/16 the ball. I think it is 1 7/8" but cannot find it anywhere on your site. I called and your support person thought 1 13/16, but was not sure. Tks!

by:

Beefy. Great finish. Nice replacement for my old rusty one.

Still work great. Would buy again.*

by:

We liked the results of how well the Reese weight distribution and sway control system so much that we went ahead and ordered the parts needed to set up a second vehicle to tow the same trailer. Reese and etrailer.com have made preparing for and towing the race car hauler a breeze! We couldn't ask for a better combination...

by:

The heavy duty hitch and other parts that I received from etrailer were exactly what I ordered and at a good price. The delivery was fast and nothing damaged. Thanks etrailer I will be buying from you again.

by:

Nice chrome trailer ball. Installed easily on the new hitch.

by:

Just as described. Its a Chrome 2-5/16 ball that works well with the Curt C45340 hitch.

by:

This hitch ball is stout!! It’s heavy and dense and made very well. This is the second one I have purchased, as this one will be installed on a lower drop Curt hitch.

by:

Works well with the receiver hitch I mounted it to. Gets used almost every day.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendations for 10K Enclosed Car Trailer
Anytime the weight of a trailer exceeds 50% of the vehicle's weight (which it does, in this case) weight distribution is highly recommended. Because enclosed trailers have a large surface area on the sides which act like the sail on a boat when impacted by crosswinds or turbulence from oncoming or passing traffic, using a weight distribution kit with an integral sway control component is also highly recommended. Weight distribution will level out the ride height between the truck's front...

  • Will Brake Actuator Cause Trailer Sway
I have never heard of a brake actuator being the cause of trailer sway; you mentioned higher speeds, and without a form of sway control, that's going to naturally occur more the faster you go. I can't give you any specific amount of movement in the tongue, but if you're mostly experiencing sway at higher speeds, you can help remedy the issue with a weight distribution hitch with sway control. The Reese Steadi-Flex is compatible with surge brakes and the right one depends on your tongue...

  • Reese Weight Distribution With Sway Control That Works With 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
We can get you set up with a Reese weight distribution with sway control, and that's a smart choice as their Strait-Line models offer superb control due to their dual cam system that control the spring bars and apply pressure and tighten at sudden movement. Getting the right one for two different trailers will be difficult though unless they have a very similar loaded tongue weight, because the correct system would be one in which your trailer's tongue weight falls somewhere in the middle...

What the dealer was trying to say is that trailer Tongue Weight (TW) is typically, about 10 to 15 percent of the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), and a system should be picked with those figures in mind. Total Tongue Weight (TTW) also refers to the tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of the cargo that sits behind the rear axle of your vehicle. The 10,000 lb Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 isn't too wide for your trailer but it may be too long. If you have a tongue weight of 1,400 lbs a weight distribution with a higher tongue weight range would be ideal.
