Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all of the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, and it also gives you the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Blue Ox weight distribution system

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your towing setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

2 Types of Sway Control

The TrackPro features 2 different sway control technologies to provide the best towing experience possible.

Positive Caster Keeps Trailer Centered

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

The TrackPro is built with a positive caster angle - pointed toward the rear of your trailer - to help stop sway before it even starts. This is the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. This is caster taking over. Likewise, the TrackPro features a positive caster angle built into the hitch. Working in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force, this caster angle helps to keep your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle, even during high winds and sharp turns, resulting in a smoother towing experience.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

While this system does its best to keep your trailer in line, the TrackPro is also able to correct sway should it occur. Unlike many traditional weight distribution systems with chain-style setups, the TrackPro uses steel brackets to hold the ends of the spring bars, and therefore your trailer, in place. While chain-style setups do a good job with weight distribution alone, they aren't really designed to limit sway, so they typically allow a good amount of side-to-side play.

In addition to better holding the trailer in line, these brackets create friction with the spring bars to combat sway that might occur in heavy winds or following sudden maneuvers. When this type of sway happens, the tapered ends of the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. This friction limits the movement of the spring bar, which minimizes further side-to-side movement of the trailer. The steel-on-steel friction that occurs with the TrackPro's spring bars is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars that weigh multiple tons, so you know it'll be highly effective.

Fast, Easy Setup

Blue Ox TrackPro Hitch Head

Many weight distribution systems require you to manually adjust the pitch of the hitch head by stacking washers. This can be a tedious, trial-and-error process where you have to unhook your trailer, disassemble the head to add or remove washers to get the desired tilt, put it all back together, and then determine if you have the correct placement. If the pitch still isn't right, you have to do it all over again.

The TrackPro removes all of that hassle with an easy-to-use hitch head that has the required pitch already built into it. Whereas other systems require washers to help achieve the proper tension in the head, the positive caster angle built into the TrackPro ensures the proper pitch, so there's no need to manually adjust the tilt. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper rise or drop for your setup. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed.

Love this hitch system. I was hesitant to spend the money but I am so glad that I did. I have had the system for about a year now and it has impressed me every time I use it. I recently put a 3.5” lift kit on my truck and with the easy adjustments on the hitch system, I was able to accommodate for the lift in about 20 minutes. Would recommend

by:

First my truck and trailer sit and travel LEVEL, and I am pleased with the hitch after loosing one of the original “pins” while traveling(these are the pins that keep the sway bars on L brackets). I ordered the replacement “Pins” Now after a couple thousand miles, I do like how stable the truck and trailer are when other vehicles pass, the side push pull is much less. If the hitch came with the replacement “Pins” this would be a 5 Star Review.

by:

the only problem I had was when the UPS man picked up the box all the nuts, bolts and hair pins fell out. other than that, I have received accurate advice as for the purchase and i am very happy with the hitch and its quality. easy to set yp and sturdy. tows great

the Blue ox hithch has worked well. We had a problem with the torsion bar coming out of the keeper brackets in certain situations. I called E-trailer and they gave me Blue oxs number blue ox told me that there were updated keepers for the bar and they sent the ups to my next destination free of charge. I installed them I now have 12,000 miles on them without a problem

by:

The difference with and without the Blue Ox is dramatic.
I pull a 25' Airstream with a 2011 Porsche Cayenne with a 3.6 liter 6 cylinder.

The Blue Ox balances the Cayenne to a degree that I didn't think was possible.

This hitch needs to be the first thing you buy when you get an RV.

by:

Just
Drove from Colorado to Oregon.
It worked better than our old one. Barely felt the big rigs as they went by.

by:

This is a much better trailer hitch than the one I had before. This one does not have any chains to deal with which was a safety hazard I felt. I like how smooth this one works and how easy it is to operate. I feel the trailer tows so much smoother than using the previous hitch.

by:

The Good: This has worked out great. It’s a must have for a trucker camper and trailer setup. We drove across the country without a weight distribution hitch and it was nerve racking! Every semi that passed us would nearly run us off the road. When we traveled back home with the new hitch it was a night and day difference. The hitch eliminated all sway. I can actually use my cruise control now!

The Bad: When the hitch arrived, it would fit into my truck’s receiver. RAM trucks have a very tight opening on their 2.5” factory receivers. The Blue Ox hitch was oversized by 3/8”. I had to machine the hitch to get it to fit.

by:

Installed on the truck for a test fit. IT comes with a chrome ball installed, usually 13K rated 2 5/16", 7.5K 2" for the smallest model. Quality looks good, everything went together simply. The bolts for the head to shank are to be torqued at 257ft/lbs each, my torque wrench maxes out at 150ft/lbs so will have to have the dealer tighten it when I pick up my new trailer in a few days. Comes with a large pry bar to spring the bars onto the J hooks on the tongue brackets. The shank, head and even the tongue clamp plate look cast, are quite heavy duty, not welded plate stock.

by:

Good product. My trailer pulls much smoother and has less sway than my previous hitch
The only downside is the noise it makes when the leveler bars move under load.

by:

I was thinking about getting a 2500 series truck to pull my 25.5 ft t/t, to try to get rid of the terrible sway I have with my 1500. It was to the point that I did not want to pull the trailer 5 miles to my property on the water. Buying this hitch was a last try at eliminating the sway problem. It did just that!!! The etrailer video for installation was very helpful. I ordered the hitch on the 20th at noontime, was told to expect delivery by the 26th. It was here at noontime on the 21st. This is the first time I have ever wrote a review for anything. I wrote this one in the hopes that It will help someone resolve their sway problems.

by:

Instructions and videos were very useful and Samantha answered all my questions about the correct model of a weight distribution hitch for my truck and cargo trailer I would need. The order showed up in good condition in a couple days

by:

Will only use etrailer for all needs pertaining to parts for trailers, RV’s and vehicles. Always reasonable priced, ouick shipping and stand behind what they sell and ship. AWSOME people to deal with

by:

Product arrived carefully packaged. Not installed yet, but looks very high quality. And USA made! Technical support with what hitch I would need for my particular application very helpful. Would buy from your company again.

by:

Although I haven’t actually used the hitch I bought yet, my experience so far with etrailer has been great! They communicate well right from the start and shipping was fast and free. I will definitely use etrailer again!

by:

Just average. One of the thread holes for the L bracket was not completely threaded. Just a little pain in the butt.
I have to compare this hitch to a Husky I purchased from etrailer last year. For the same price the Husky is about 50% better. (sorry!)

by:

Works like a charm! Easy installation and use! Two thumbs up!

by:

Was unable to track my order. Was unable to obtain any updates. Didn’t even know the package was arriving today. And the box was severely damaged

Great product and great customer servic e!

by:

Working great. No sway issues.

by:

I like that it is lighter weight than most others on the market but in my opinion it could do the better job of preventing sway.

by:

Products arrived as ordered, however, the 2 week delivery time was a bit excessive for an online merchant nowadays.

  • Recommended Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution System for 720 Lb Tongue Weight
The Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution part # BLU77FR is my recommendation for a trailer with 720 lb tongue weight. The trailer once loaded (propane tank filled, batteries, etc) would likely exceed this value and that does not take into consideration the weight over the rear axle which gets added as well. This option also gives you more room for error or upgrading.

Ultimately, it's up to the trailer manufacturer to determine if a weight distribution system can be used with an aluminum frame.
