Video Transcript for Review of Blue Ox Weight Distribution Hitch - 11 Hole Shank - BLU86FR

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Shank for 2" hitches. Now, this shank is designed to slide into your 2" hitch receiver, and it provides the attachment point here for your weight distribution system's head assembly. Now, this one here is designed for use with the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution System. What's nice...

This is a solid steel construction for strength and durability, and it uses a nice powder coat finish on it for corrosion resistance. The weight capacity on this, the maximum gross trailer weight capacity is 15,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight capacity is 1500 pounds. If you notice this one has 11 adjustment holes. They're at 1 1/4" increments center to center between each hole.

This is for attaching the head assembly too. It'll let you level your trailer with your tow vehicle, and it can be used in either the rise position like it is now, or if you flip it this way it can be used in the drop position. Either one of those it is made to where you'll be able to fit it to your application. Now, the drop or rise is always measured from the top of the shank, so if you'd put it in this position it's measured from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform on the head assembly when it's installed here. When you install your head assembly here, it's going to be measured from here to the top of that ball platform, so in this one, in this position, you're going to have a maximum rise of 13". Then if you put it into the drop position like this, you'll have a maximum drop of 7".

Now, this is made in the USA. It does include the 5/8" diameter pin and clip, which is used to attach this. When you slide this into your hitch receiver it'll go right through the hitch pin hole right here. Now, I do want to give you some measurements on this. The overall length, which is going to be measured from the back here to the front of the shank, is going to be right at 14". Now, the distance from the hitch pin hole right here to the front of the shank, center of the hitch pin hole is going to be right at 11".

To the center of these adjustment holes from the center of the hitch pin hole it's right at 10". And from the center of this hitch pin hole to the back of the shank, you can see is right at nine". Now, if we measure from this hitch pin hole right here to the rear of the shank that's going to measure right at 3" to the center of the hitch pin hole.Another critical measurement will be from the center of this hitch pin hole to the end of this gusset, this large gusset here for extra strength and support, for your clearance, if you measure from here to the center of that hitch pin hole you can see it's going to be right at 4". We mentioned this is an 11 hole weight distribution shank. Total height, if we measure that, it's going to be right at 15", and as we mentioned, if you measure between each of these adjustment holes center to center the measurement between them is 1 1/4". But that should do it for the review on this Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Shank for 2" hitches.

Great service and great product. This is why I am a customer.

by:

Just what I needed. Special purpose, no weld solution. Drivers of old or custom trucks read on.

2003 F350 SuperCab Longbed 4x4 with brand new, way heavier leaf springs all 4 corners (some modification required to perches and pins) in 2021, still using factory 2" hitch, getting level was a problem being smaller and higher than today's setups. Shank and upgrade to 2,000 lb spring bars nailed it. Also, trailer coupler has 3 vertical adjustments, so placed coupler at top.

Note that making the new stuff work on old stuff is an expensive headache that leaves brand new, expensive, low demand parts piled up in its wake. Suggest upgrading your hitch or buying pieces a la carte, as 2,000 lb tongue, long shank and 2" receiver has become antiquated.

It was installed professionally by camping world. Coating is all coming off. Arms pop out during travel. The square pins fall though slots. The angled brackets that mount to camper chassis are failing. Its the worst hitch I have ever owned. Literally.

by:

I like the hitch and it works great with my '07 Tundra and 27' Travel Trailer. It makes the two feel like you're driving a single vehicle and Cross winds and buffeting from passing semi's is virtually unnoticeable. Unfortunately, the Powder coating leaves a bit to be desired and warrants a significant mark down in the rating.

Pros: Easy of installation and hooking up the hitch. Adjustments are also very simple.

Cons: The "Powder Coating" is atrocious. It showed up flaking out of the box and just continued flaking during the installation. So, it started immediately surface rusting. I didn't think it worth returning and I guess I will just touch it up with spray paint as needed. Powder coating should be significantly tougher than what I see on this hitch. If it wasn't for this I would absolutely give it 5 stars. In the picture with the 2 bolts is the most obvious example of the flaking powder coat.

My only gripe with etrailer is shipping quality. This is a heavy item, well constructed, heavy duty, not lightweight. To ship this in a standard cardboard box without reinforcement is nuts. When delivered by UPS this box had gapping holes and part of the contents were protruding outside the shipping box. My UPS driver stated that such heavy items should be attached to a wood skeleton inside the box to keep from moving around during shipment. To my amazement all the parts were present, albeit banged up a bit with paint damage and gouging. So be aware that you may find your order in similar condition. etrailer responds to me with yada yada. Not real happy with this one but the unit itself is quite robust although a little black enamel will be required.

Love this hitch system. I was hesitant to spend the money but I am so glad that I did. I have had the system for about a year now and it has impressed me every time I use it. I recently put a 3.5” lift kit on my truck and with the easy adjustments on the hitch system, I was able to accommodate for the lift in about 20 minutes. Would recommend

First my truck and trailer sit and travel LEVEL, and I am pleased with the hitch after loosing one of the original “pins” while traveling(these are the pins that keep the sway bars on L brackets). I ordered the replacement “Pins” Now after a couple thousand miles, I do like how stable the truck and trailer are when other vehicles pass, the side push pull is much less. If the hitch came with the replacement “Pins” this would be a 5 Star Review.

This thing is amazing! I bought this to haul my 24’ car (toy) hauler behind my 03 Suburban which has coil springs instead of leaf springs. This hitch has made a world of difference. I honestly was shocked at the difference it made. It almost feels like I’m not hauling a trailer at all.

I bought this in April '22 for our new trailer. The second day of our trip to Alaska, one of the Retaining Keys with the cotter pin fell off. It was while hooking up to our campsite that we saw it was gone and the spring bar bar had been free of mooring. Luckily we had a C Bolt and duck tape to hold the one sway bar without the retaining key and taped up the other to make sure it didn't fall off on the rest of our journey. When we called Blue Ox they sent two day to AK the two packages of the retaining key w/step. These turned out different than the ones that came on the TracPro and are thicker and shorter - I think these were suppose to come with the TracPro WD/Sway and should have been in the package when we got it. There is too much play between the sring bar and the L Bracket with the Retaining key that was in our order. Pictures for reference. If you order the Blue Ox TracPro, call make and sure you get the correct Retaining Keys with it, you should not have to buy them separately.

Bought this to reduce rear sag in truck and you would think installing is pretty common sense but apparently it isn't. Instructions aren't very clear and since sad didn't go away at all, I'm guessing it isn't installed correctly. Instructions need to be MORE clear than they are otherwise you'll need to pay a professional to install it as I have no idea if it's correct or not.

by:

Jbars bend to easy and brackets move even when torque to speck

by:

Easy to install haven’t driven the truck yet, but it seems to be doing exactly what it needs too.

Trailer hooked up with the blue ox the rear of the truck sits 4” higher than without. The nose drops about 3/4” compared to no blue ox. Massive difference in the right direction.

The photos are a 2021 4Runner no extra load in the back. Trailers 17’ ~3,500lbs max. I believe about a 350lb tongue weight and was mostly un-loaded.

by:

the only problem I had was when the UPS man picked up the box all the nuts, bolts and hair pins fell out. other than that, I have received accurate advice as for the purchase and i am very happy with the hitch and its quality. easy to set yp and sturdy. tows great

Works well. It's my first time with a distribution hitch, so I've no basis for comparison. I tow a 7200# 30' trailer with a 2007 F-150 (full-timer). It took a few trips to the scales to get things right, since I'm very close to my weight limits. Product arrived without the receiver (damaged box). Etrailer was very quick to provide replacement.

On assembly, I discovered that it was sent with incorrect mounting plates. Blue Ox expedited a parts kit. Overall, it seems to work well. I still have to be careful with wind, or I get pushed around on the road. It's mostly a non-issue.

I've traveled about 5-6K miles, and there is some noticeable wear, scoring, and rust developing where the torsion bars meet the trailer. These parts should be easily replaceable, as long as they're still manufactured. You may want to consider spares once you confirm that you have the correct bars. The friction points can develop metal splinters.

The pivots started showing wear after a long stretch of bouncy highway in Iowa. It was within the 1st 1000 miles, so I'll count this as break-in. I just readjusted the mounting point on the trailer at an overnight stop. I haven't had to adjust it since. The slop in the bushings makes for a greasy mess.

Wear gloves and put a plastic bag over the receiver when you remove it, or you're going to get greasy. Also, be careful of how low the receiver hangs down. I've caught it twice in uneven parking lots. I'm leaving it long, since it helps protect the tongue jack.

It meets expectation. Etrailer and Blue Ox provided excellent customer service. I still took one star, since I was on a deadline with work, and my plans got pushed back two weeks because of this. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but the customer service from both parties was fantastic.

Pulled to Dallas from Jackson, MS and back and they performed as advertised - sway was cut way dawn. When it did occur it was self correcting.

by:

The TrackPro parts list listed items 14 and 15 as 2-5/16" and 2" Hitch balls respectively, only the 2-5/16" ball was included and I needed the 2" hitch ball. Now I'm having to have the 2-5/16" hitch ball removed from the underslung hitch head assembly and get a 2" hitch ball attached. Looking forward to getting it all hooked up, I do expect a great improvement in the towing experience.

  • What is the Maximum Drop on the Blue Ox 7 Hole Shank
I spoke to Blue Ox and the TrackPro Weight Distribution System # BLU27FR offers a maximum 2 inches of drop or 8 inches of rise if needed. That is going from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. This is standard for their 7 hole shanks that come with this part. If more drop is needed, however, we do have a couple other options available for the shanks. The Blue Ox Shank # BXW4002 will give you 4 1/2 inches of drop and 10 1/2 inches of rise. The Blue Ox Shank # BLU86FR will...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System With 6 Inches of Drop
The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 offers good sway control and weight capacities, but is a little limited on the amount of drop. We do not currently have an option to give you more than 4 inches of drop. That being said, we do have a few other options available. The Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank # BLU86FR will offer up to 7 inches of drop when used with one of their trunnion bar set ups. This would need to be purchased separately from one of said systems. These do have a little less...

  • How to Fight Pop Up Camper Sway From Crosswinds and Passing Semis
To help keep everything level and controlled from crosswinds and passing semis I recommend using the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU36FR but then swapping out the 7-hole shank with the 11-hole shank # BLU86FR to make sure you get that 5-1/4" drop you're needing. I really like the TrackPro because it gives you multiple adjustment points for the mounting brackets. The only thing you'll need to watch out for is that swivel jack. The brackets will mount 20" to 25"...

  • Can Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank BLU86FR work with Reese WD Head
Yes, the Blue Ox weight distribution shanks like the part # BLU86FR that you referenced are compatible with Reese weight distribution heads because thankfully most of the WD system manufacturers made their shanks to exact same dimensions.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 13,000 lbs Travel Trailer
Congrats on the new trailer and thanks for the pictures! I checked online and it looks like your 2022 Stryker STG 3313 tops out at just below 13,000 lbs. Tongue weight is typically 10% - 15% of your trailer's total weight. The 1,400 lbs system seems extremely low and would only be beneficial if you were way on the low end. You can load your trailer up and use the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale for Campers and Utility Trailers - 2,000-lb Capacity # e99044 to get an exact weight. If your tongue...

It sounds like what you are saying is that when you upgraded to the bigger 2019 Ram 2500 that your receiver was too high on the taller truck and now when you connect to your 2018 Keystone Cougar Trailer the coupler is too low. It sounds like you need a taller shank for your Blue Ox Weight distribution system. I have a couple options for you depending on how low you need to go.
