Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Love the tires. I upgraded to 4000 pound springs at the same time I purchased the tires and now my single-axle travel trailer tracks straight and true behind my truck.

by:

I ordered 5 each Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14, load range D, rim mounted tires. I received via UPS, 5 each Loadstar Karrier ST205/75R14 105/101M, load range D tires, well packed in a timely manner in good condition. DOT manufacture codes were from the first half of 2016. I hope that helps folks that wondered about the complete tire code. I don't understand why everybody is so stingy about publishing the complete tire code when it does in fact provide the MOST valuable comparison information.

I mounted the tire/rims to my 5 on 4 1/2 hubs, torqued the nuts to specs, and drove about 20 miles round trip to a truck scale to weigh my rig. Happly, with a partial load, I was 1200 lbs under my max load. The trailer pulled good and at this point I've very happy with the purchase, considering 14 inch, load range D tires are hard to come by.

My trailer is 10 years old, and it has seen about 4K miles of travel each year. The last few of years, I've had several blow outs, initially on a 4 year old set of load range C radials which I replaced in November of 2015 with a set of load range C bias ply tires. On my third 1000 (500 miles one way) mile run this spring, I had two blowouts, one coming and one going, on the passenger side. Inspection of the passenger side wheel well indicated there had been some rubbing. From day one the clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well has be close, around 2 inches.

As a disclaimer, I've not been the best at keeping my speed down, made some modifications to the trailer that have added about 350 lbs to the base weight, and my wife loads heavy for our dry camping excursions. These factors have probably contributed to my blowouts. After the last blow out, I decided to take some more aggressive action: I upgraded the suspension with heavy duty springs, upgraded the tires to these LRD Karriers, have taken the decision to actively manage a light cargo pack, and when not rolling I'm taking most of the weight off the tires.

Hopefully, all my actions, and Importantly, the significant upgrade to load range D tires will solve my problems.

Put about 3000 miles on the tires this spring and early summer. They are wearing well, no problems. Delighted.

by:

The powder coating is holding up better than expected. Only very fine light rusting at a few edges has appeared after over a year including saltwater use. Tire wear is good and the Load D tire has greatly improved heat and wear with our 3500lb axle load.

I'm replacing my old 12" wheel with this new 14' wheel and radial, getting them spun balanced. can't wait to mount them. they look great!

by:

Product arrived on time and is exactly what I expected. Perfect replacement tire for a small Keystone Hideout.

by:

Excellent tire and wheel. Excellent ride and control.
I ordered on a Sunday, and all 4 tires arrived in Nashville Tuesday early PM.
All of etrailer employees that made my orders happen so quickly are the BEST. Thank you very much

by:

Just put them on. My old rims were 20+ years old the tires were from 2008. So I guess it was time?! The karriers were easy to install and the radial tire seems good. I will be taking long trip soon so that will really tell me. But for now I'm very pleased.

by:

The tire and wheel assemblies look good. I haven’t pulled the trailer yet so this isn’t an in-use review. I couldn’t give them 5 stars because one of the assemblies needed 4 1/2 ounces of wheel weights to balance. To those of you that would argue they don’t require balancing I say this...if it rotates, if it spins it needs to be balanced! Great prices, excellent shipping services. You can’t go wrong.

Have 6000 miles on these tires now and they are wearing and riding well. I tow at 70 MPH so I balanced the tire and wheel assemblies when new.

by:

I changed the tires and rims on our travel trailer from 13 to 14 inch. These look and worked good. Etrailer is one of the best companies I order anything from. Great service. Thanks

by:

Very good results from the Karrier Tires. Notice the date code in lower portion of photo the tire was made the 45th week of 2016. The tires are fresh when you receive them. Just returned from 2k trip with no visible wear. Thanks! etrailer

After one year and over 10k miles the Karrier tires and wheels are looking great.

by:

Excellent product and customer service. I will buy again soon.

by:

I ordered one of these as a replacement after a blow out, and gave it 3 stars because, I had not had a chance to test it much. It has a been a few months and a few thousand miles, and I like it.

This is the highest load rating I have been able to find a 14 inch tire, and it shows. With one of these on one side, and the best I could find locally on the other, it was clear the other was struggling.

These hold pressure well, and the like to have 70PSI in them. The look like holding up my 18 foot camper (single axle) fully loaded is a what they are made for.

I ordered this tire make a matched pair on the camper.

by:

The packages arrived before the scheduled delivery. Each tire was in its’ own box undamaged with convenient carrying handles x2. The rims and tires were perfect. Each D rated tire had 65#’s of air in them already. All I had to do was bolt them on. I highly recommend e trailer.

by:

I had just replaced my two tires three weeks ago. (e-trailer) Unfortunately a severe road hazard wrecked my tire and rim. You were very fast sending me a new one. Thank you. The tires made the travel trailer ride and handle better.

by:

I have had my trailer at a remote campground all season. On a recent trip, I noticed that the tread cap on my tires was separating from the sidewalls. Not wanting to risk a blow out while towing to the nearest town, I decided to order these tire and wheel combos and replace them myself on my next trip up to the trailer. Janice, the sales rep, was extremely helpful assisting my with my order. The shipment was received when it was supposed to be. I was very impressed to see that my tires were manufactured in the 41st week of 2016. That's only 5 weeks old as we are in the 46th week now. I couldn't be happier! Please take the tires to be balanced as they do not come balanced and were far from perfect. I had them balanced and inflated to specs. I installed them yesterday and made my 400 mile trip home. No problems and the tires look no worse for wear and handled excellent.

by:

Typical service from Etrailer. Fast delivery and processing , great communication and product arrived exactly as described.

by:

Excellent packaging and product. And quick delivery.

by:

Easy to order and the tire arrived as scheduled.

The
spare tire that came with my travel trailer exploded! It had never touched the ground and was always covered.

by:

My wheels/tires were shipped in great boxes. These wheels are very heavy. The boxes had handles that made them easier to pick up and carry.

by:

This tire/wheel combo is just what I needed. It'll be going on a 20 year old cargo trailer that was just sitting outside all of that time and never towed! My first loaded tow will be a 2,500 mile one-way adventure, one not to do without a spare tire.

by:

This is a spare tire, so it's not like I'm putting it into service immediately, which means I can't say how it works. It arrived in good condition, and I believe it will be a good spare for my 2018 Coleman Lantern 215BH. The only downfall is that I bought this in September 2019, and the date code on the DOT number of the tire decodes to the 26th week of 2017, so the tire was over 1 year old already, but that's probably typical for this type of item. Assuming it's been inside a warehouse the whole time, I don't expect the age to cause any problems. As expected, etrailer came through with great customer service and fast shipping.

by:

Exactly what I ordered.. Quick shipping... Good Pricing..

by:

Arrived timely and is just the size I need. I like the convenience and the price.

You can't really rate it until a year or two out and a few thousand miles.

Camper tires are fickle, especially the 14 inch ones. I can't find anyone that makes a load range E in this size. This is my first of this brand, if it holds up well I will buy more.

The stock tires, lasted a year or two and few thousand miles. About the same for the next set of replacements. The third set was doing good until a blow out, that this Karrier is replacing.

by:

It is hard to review this product as I have just received it and it will be used on my camper. I will not use my camper until mid September. The tire looks like a good quality product and I am confident it will serve me well. I have never received a bad product from Etrailer nor found problems with anything. Ordering was easy and delivery was as promised.

by:

The Tire/Wheel combo arrived in perfect condition and installed easily. The radial tires were a bit heavier than the original bias ply tires I was replacing. I anticipate the trailer will track better.

Great customer service. Great team effort!

Though it is possible the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" White Wheel # AM32161 will fit your 2017 Aliner Explorer, trailer manufacturers do not make a detailed list of all parts available. To find out if this fits you are going to need to know your hub's bolt pattern, and I have added a link to a help article which details exactly how to find this. You need a tire and wheel setup with at least 6,400 lb of capacity since that's how much your boat and trailer weighs together so I would not recommend anything in the 13 inch wheel size as nothing in that size will be rated high enough. The next size up that has the capacity you'd need would be the 205/75-14 in Load Range D which would have capacity of 2,200 lb at 75 psi. You might possibly be able to upgrade to a larger diameter tires like a 205/75-14, but that will largely depend on how much wheel well clearance you have currently. To the inside of the tire, you'll want no less than 2 inches of clearance to the trailer frame/inside of wheel well. To the underside of the wheel well, you want 4 or an absolute minimum of 3 inches when the pop-up is loaded as it would typically be when you tow. The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).
