Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The product was exactly as described the time of delivery was excellent The tires fit and look great on my trailer couldn't ask for anything better all-around great product and service I definitely will use them again

by:

Very nice tire and wheel. . .will be the spare on the new camper trailer we're building, so it may never come off the spare tire mount and go to work. . .but it will be there if we need it. Price was very competitive and the quality seems excellent. What's not to like in a spare tire full of air?

by:

Again E Trailer exceeds expectations. Product delivered ahead of time and fit perfect. These tires and rims makes the trailer look great. E Trailer is always my place to shop if I need something for my trailers. Thank you E Trailer again you have exceeded all expectations.

THE PRODUCTS PURCHASED ARE GREAT !! I have already used them and they work just fine. Possibly better then the originals.

The ordering and the delivery were exceptional and actually better then I expected.

I believe the pricing was a fair price for the quality.

Based on my experience I would (and have already) recommended ETRAILER.COM to anyone.

by:

Using this as a spare for my 4x8 trailer. Can't really speak to the long term quality of it, but from the looks of it on my spare holder, it will likely do the job.

by:

It was a good price. I bought it as a spare tire. Have not had to use it!

by:

This is a good product at a fair price. Shipping is immediate! Good job

  • Can 4.8-8 Trailer Tires Be Replaced with a Larger Size on a Boat Trailer
First, you will need to make sure the tire capacity (combined) meets or exceeds the loaded trailer. Any given trailer tire can come in different load ranges which will vary the capacity of that tire. A load range B in 4.80-8 has a capacity of 590 pounds per tire. Going up to a load range C and the capacity increases to 760 pounds per tire. Avoid overloading the trailer. Make sure you are within the stated capacity (which should be on a sticker or plate somewhere on the trailer frame near...

  • Can Bigger Tires be Put on Trailer if There is Enough Room
I am not sure what tire size you are wanting to upgrade to but as long as you have the room there is never harm in using bigger tires. Your current 5.30-12 size tires should have a section width of 5.6" and an overall diameter of about 22". If you can find the section width and diameter of the tire you are wanting to upgrade to then all you have to do is divide that in half and see if your fender and trailer frame clearance is at least 2" or more than the difference. Attached are a few...

  • What is the Bolt Pattern of the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel # AM30740
The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel # AM30740 has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. This means that there are 5 bolt holes. If you measure from the center of one to the far edge of one directly across from it that would measure 4-1/2". I have attached a helpful article for you to reference. The tire that comes with this combo is a 4 ply tire with a load range of B which means that the max load for one tire is 840 lbs at 55 psi. You need to keep the tire inflated to 55 psi so that you...

  • How To Know If Your Tires Are The Right Size For The Wheel
Ironman RB Metric 155R12C D/8PLY BSW tires are designed to fit a rim width of 4.5". If you know the exact model number of the wheels you could look up the width, otherwise the only way to know would be to remove the tire and measure. You'll measure from where the tire beads will seat on the wheel, which is from the inside of the inner wheel flange to the inside of the outer wheel flange, not from edge to edge of the wheel.

  • Special Trailer Tires to Replace 155R12 Radials on Boat Trailer
Radial type special trailer tires will tend to run smoother (and cooler) than bias ply tires since they offer more flex and better ground contact, thanks to their softer side walls. However passenger car tires should not be used on any trailer application. Special trailer, or ST tires, are the only type of tire that should be mounted on a boat trailer (with few exceptions) since they are made to handle the vertical loads from trailers. The equivalent tire size to your 155R12 is a 5.30-12....

  • Trailer Tires to Replace 155R12 Tires
A 155/12 tire will be about 6.1 inches wide. The closest match is a 145/12 at 5.7 inches wide. I have included a link to all of the tires and tire/wheel combos we have in this size. A 155 isn't a trailer tire size (unless it has an ST in front of the size). It is wider than all other 12 inch trailer tires which leads me to believe that if it is on a 12 inch trailer wheel it could be too wide for the wheel causing it to leak air.

  • Will 5.30-12 Trailer Tires Fit In Place of 155/80-12 Trailer Tires on a Tent Trailer
A 155/80-12 is definitely not a common trailer tire sized, though it may have been at one time. It sounds more like a car tire size which should not be used on a trailer. The trailer tongue or frame should have a sticker or plate that indicates the size it requires. If it does say 155/80-12 you will need to go with the closest match since that since is no longer available. The 5.30-12 tires are going to be very, very close. • Can a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire Replace a 4.80-8
The 4.80-12 trailer tire size is designed to fit a 12 inch rim and you have 8 inch rims currently so you would have to replace the rims and tires at the same time assuming you have the fender clearance. If you have a 4 bolt pattern you would want the part # AM30620, if you have a 5 bolt pattern you would want the part # AM30660. The tires will be overall about 4-1/2 inches taller than what you currently have.

Chances are, your wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern but I recommend confirming it. You'll want to choose a tire whose load rating for two tires exceeds the fully loaded weight of your pop-up (including propane and water). The # AM30740 you were looking at has an outer diameter of 21.9" so you are going to lose 1.95" of clearance on the top. You need a minimum of 3" for regular suspension travel.
