Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Good deal on good tires. Old tires on my boat trailer were dry rotted. These are correct size and load rating.

by:

I got this tire for my utility trailer because my old ones dry rotted out and finally started leaking after 28 years. I first replaced the spare and then the two on the trailer.
These Kenda tires came in holding good tire and bead shape, not twisted or mangled. I was pleased with that. The went on the rims really easy. I do it by hand using motorcycle tire irons. I also replaced the valve stems. I recommend these Kenda tires.

Everything is fine tire are great no problems

Tires were ordered, shipped fast !, i have never received anything as fast as these from anyone online !. i can not say how good they are yet ?, i just mounted them on the rims by hand on 6/22/2020. not sure how some buyers complained the tires they got from etrailer were too hard to mount ?, couple 2 inch ratchet straps wrapped around them after sitting in the sun for about 15 mins, they were pretty easy. little hint when mounting tires on rims by hand: grease the lip of the rim and inside of tire, NOT ALOT !. tire will go on easy, least they do for me. i can not say how good these tires are ?, or how long they will last ?, i just installed them, and have not pulled my boat trailer anywhere yet. i can say the price was a tad high ?, but they ARE 6-ply tires !!. well worth the price if they hold up ?. mounted these on my haul right boat trailer, old tires that were installed on the trailer that came on it have been sitting a lot sense 2010, they were dry rotted, was time to buy new tires,I choose etrailer from reading reviews on fast shipping, great prices ?, so far..most are correct !. again, can not say how long these tires last ?, but if i get a couple seasons out of them ?, I'LL BE A HAPPY BOATER !..LOL. i am including some pic's of them mounted on my 14ft boat trailer. my only concern is putting 90 psi into them ?, this just seems WAY too much air pressure for a small tire ?, so i decided on just putting 80 psi in them, after all, they are 4.80x12 tires, and they wont be hauling nothing heavy other than my aluminum boat and motor, and some light gear ?, no need in putting 90 psi in them for my short road trips.

We do recommend to inflate trailer tires to their max PSI to prevent heat build up which is the leading cause of blow outs. The only brand that is designed to be used with a lower PSI per load weight is the Goodyear Brand.

by:

These tires were exactly what I needed for my trailer. They shipped in a short time and at a really good price. I would definitely recommend trailer to everyone!

by:

Bought these tires for an old 4x8 utility trailer I'm rebuilding. Shipped quick and were packaged very well. Mounted these tires by hand. Because they are bias ply and quite narrow (made for a 4" wide wheel) they were a bit tricky to seat the bead. No fault of the tire. My wheels are are a bit wider, around 4.5"-5" wide. These tires ride well even without being balanced. They were an inexpensive option for my trailer that only sees light duty and short distance use. Cheaper and better quality than I could find locally.

by:

We purchased these tires as replacements for our Harbor Freight trailer. Much better than what we had. Very happy we found these.

by:

Very narrow (where the rubber meets the road). Narrower than my previous purchases/use of 'Loadstar' and 'Carlisle' tires. More appropriate for a motorcycle

by:

Tires came smashed together ganna be difficult to put on rim now.

by:

Great tires, these are superb trailer t ires.

by:

I received my 480-12 tire with quick response after I got the tire I tried to install the tire on the rim and the tire was so out of whack irregular squinched up that I couldn't install it on the rim the girl told me from me trailer that's the way they are shipped they are folded in half I asked her if they can send me another tire that hasn't been folded in half and she says probably not if each trailer is going to provide tires like this they will no longer get my business in the future they told me to ship the tire back UPS and it's 40 Mi round trip for me to do that they provided no help at all and also they never returned my calls to help me

It really sounds like it was tough time to install the tire. When these bias ply tires are shipped they are bundled together which can cause them to seem like the are misshapped. No worries if it happens as often tire shops can mount them with no problems.

by:

Ordered three tires. Super fast shipping and the best price anywhere. Buy with confidence. Going to put my new tires on the new wheels tomorrow!

by:

I have gotten these before and they are a very good tire work well on my little trailer

by:

Excellent service and quick delivery!

by:

Great price on a good tire!

Blew one with less than 600 miles on it on a trip in the Maine woods.Piece of stone cut into it like a knife..unable to repair... Maine is tough on tires!!

by:

Seem to be fine on my light trailer. Don't vibrate and don't leak. I would buy again.

by:

Great service and exactly what i needed. Etrailer is the best to buy from.
For the tires, I have not mounted them yet so don't know the durability but by looks better quality than i had that lasted many years. They will be used on a modified Harbor Freight 4X8 trailer.

by:

Noah was very helpful with my return. He made the process very easy and was handled promptly. I placed another order a couple days later due largely in part to this transaction.

by:

Good quality produce, received in time and well packed. Ordering was easy too.

by:

So far they are holding up well. They have no dry rot cracks in them

by:

Great price. Load range c and hidden co st

by:

Happy with the tires. They are less than 6 months old so nice and fresh.

  • Upgrading to Larger Tire on Trailer With 4.80-12 Tires
Your typical 4.80-12 tire like # AM10062 has an outer diameter of 20.5" and section width of 4.8". Since you currently have 3.5" of clearance on top, and 3" is the minimum, you can only move up 1" in tire diameter. This means the only real option would be a tire like the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10130. This tire has a 5.7" section width and 21.3" outer diameter. Neither of these would cause you clearance issues. It will also fit your existing wheels. This...

  • What is the Speed Rating for the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80-12 # AM10062
All of the trailer tires we carry, unless otherwise noted on the trailer tire itself, are rated for 65 miles per hour. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire for best performance and longest life. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.

  • Availability Of a 12 Inch Wheel With 4on4 Inch Bolt Pattern and 2.5 Inch Pilot Hole For 4.80-12 Tire
We do have the Taskmaster Steel 8-Spoke Trailer Wheel # TA39RR which is 12" with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and the 2.5" pilot hole diameter. As this is the only way we have this wheel you will need to add either the Load Rang B # AM10060 or Load Range C # AM10062 trailer tire.

  • How To Decide Between 4.80-12 Load Range B and C For 14' Boat Trailer
That's going to depend on how much your boat actually weighs. A 4.80-12 load range B tire like # AM10060 is rated for around 785lbs per tire, where the load range C version # AM10062 is rated for 990lbs per tire instead. I'd take your trailer to a local weigh station and see how much it weighs, and go with the lighter tire if you safely can. Increasing the load range of a tire will stiffen the tire, so if you don't need that extra capacity for safety you're better off sticking with a...

  • Does a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire use a 12 Inch Wheel
Yes, a 4.80-12 trailer tire uses a 12 inch diameter wheel that is 4 inches wide. The 4.80 spec is the width of the tire. I have attached a link to all of our 12 inch x 4 inch trailer wheels for you to check out. They come with either a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern or a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Make sure you choose a wheel with the same bolt pattern as your trailer hub or as your previous wheels. I have also attached a help article on how to determine your bolt pattern for you to check out.

  • Compatibility of 4.80-12 Tires to Replace 145R12C Tires
The 145R12C tires can be replaced with the 4.80-12 tires like the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80-12 - Load Range C # AM10062. It will fit on the same wheel you currently have. If you prefer to get the combination because it is already balanced and ready to install you can use # AM30660. That tire size is only available in the Bias versus Radial from our manufacturers. The 4.80 x12 tires will be about 3/4 inches smaller in diameter and just under and inch in width as well.

  • Upgrading 4.80-12 Trailer Tires On a Haulmaster Trailer
Take a look at Kenda K353 tire # AM10062. This is a 4.80-12 trailer tire, load range C, rated for 990 pounds at 90 psi. This tire has a 6 ply rating. The tires we carry, unless otherwise stated on the tire itself, are rated for 65 miles per hour. One important tid bit of information that you should find helpful is that trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire, in this case 90 psi. This is because trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall...

We don't carry the part number you are looking for but I was able to determine that the wheel and tire you are looking for is basically a 4.80-12 sized tire like the # AM10062 mounted to a 12 inch trailer rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern that is very similar in appearance like the # LH45FR. We don't have this size tire already mounted on an aluminum wheel. Once these arrive, you can have them mounted at a local shop.

  • Should the Same Two 4.80-12 Tires Have the Same Outer Diameter.
Assuming you have the same two 4.80-12 tires, they should have the same outer diameter. It sounds like the reason for the difference was the different psi in each tire. Once you have filled both to the max psi, the diameter should be identical. The only other reason they might vary is if it is two different tires. For example, the Kenda # AM10062 has an outer diameter of 20.5" when inflated and the Taskmaster # TT48012C has an outer diameter of 20.63" even though both are 4.80-12 tires.

  • 4.80-12 Trailer Tires Keep Blowing Out on 2000 Coachman Camper Trailer

If they are under inflated and/or overloaded, that generates even more heat and can cause the tire to fail. Always inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi rating as indicated on the tire. If a tire sits long enough, it can suffer from dry rot or environmental wear unless covered when not in use. Given the area you travel in this could also be a factor. You...

  • Is 4.80-12 Radial or Bias Trailer Tire Better
It depends on the application, but for the majority of people, a radial 4.80-12 trailer tire is going to be better than a bias 4.80-12 trailer tire. The reason for that is bias tires have cords which run diagonally while radial tires have cords that run from side-to-side. What this does is result in radial tires flexing more, running cooler (which means they last longer), and providing better road traction. The stiffness of a bias tire though means it is better able to handle the uneven,...
