Video Transcript for Pollak 7-Way to 12 Volt Power Outlet Adapter Review

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com and we get questions from customers all the time, and they want to know how they can get a 12-Volt outlet closer to the back of their vehicle where it's a little bit more useful for them. Well, there are several ways that you can do it. You can run a 12-Volt outlet kit, different things like that, but that generally requires you to modify or add something to your vehicle. In our case, as long as you've got a working seven pole, we can use this adapter to provide a 12-Volt outlet plugin. It's a really quick and easy way, you can see, this is just going to slide in like any normal seven pole would, get it in till it stops and that's it, we're ready to plug in any of our 12-Volt accessories. This is going to be really handy for tailgating, picnics, camping or in emergency situations, like here we've got a boat trailer hooked up. If one of our tires goes down or needs air and we can't make it to an air compressor somewhere.

If we had an air compressor in our truck, we could easily plug it in here and that's going to give us the range that we need as compared to plugging this in and the front of the truck, probably wouldn't be able to reach to that backside. So all in all, it's going to be a really quick and simple way to do this with no modifications necessary whatsoever. If you take a look at the end of the adapter, it's only using two points of contact, we've got our ground right here and our power right there. So no, we don't have all those contacts, we always recommend a little dielectric grease just to keep moisture and dirt off of these, which can cause corrosion. The outside of that, our customers really enjoy having this, there are several situations it's been used in and there's a lot I could think of. If you're tailgating, think about like coolers and refrigerators, you could plug that into here and have power.

If you we're out camping, you want to charge something up or you want to run a cord, that's go over to your tent or something so you can run a fan inside, this would help you out in that situation. The emergency, we've kind of already talked about with the air compressor, but this can also be used with an inverter. If you have a laptop or a tablet that has to plug into the wall to charge, you can plug an inverter into there and then have a 1-10 or a household style plug available. Now you never want to overload a circuit like on our power circuit that comes out. A lot of times, people are going to use those to run a trailer jack up and down. Really don't want to exceed whatever your vehicles capable of and if it does have live power already, it's going to be fused, so if you do overload it, it's going to blow that fuse.

You'll simply have to replace it and reduce the number of items you're trying to use or the wattage of the item that you're trying to run with the plug. Now, if for some reason your powered circuit, which is going to be at the one o'clock position, your seven little tabs in there, it's going to be that one o'clock, if for some reason it doesn't have power to it, there are several workarounds for that and in most cases, it's already going to be built into your vehicles like on Chevy trucks similar to this, there's a wire you have to hook to your power supply. Once that wire is hooked up, sends the power through it just prevents it from shorting. In some instances, you might have to add a fuse, you might have to add a relay to your power supply and in the worst case scenario, if none of that was available, you can simply cut the wire from the backside of that one o'clock position and add your own 12 gauge wire to it. You're going to use a couple of head shrink butt connectors, just run it up the frame of your vehicle to the front. We've got breakers that are available, a 40 amp breaker would be ideal for this situation.

Just run that wire into one side of the breaker, the other side will go out to your battery and it'll give you constant power. Now some vehicles will also only have power to that when your key is in the on position, that's another workaround for that. We can run our own wire, get our power from our battery and we won't have to worry about which position the keys in. So can be a really nice and easy way to get power back here. One thing I hate is if we're out listening to music, sitting on the tailgate, I'm charging, my phone is having to go back into the cab of the truck to do something on my phone or respond to a message and then walk back, having it back here plugged in and charging would be pretty ideal. So here's a good look at one of the many situations we could use that outlet. You see, you've got a portable compressor, but it's only got about a 10 foot lead on it. If we had to run that up and inside of the vehicle, we really wouldn't be able to plug it in. So in this situation we're able to quickly power it, it's going to give our compressor the power it needs. You can see, we can easily get back here for service.I think another big benefit to having that plug on the back of the vehicle rather than using one of the 12-Volt power plugs inside of your vehicle is that if it's going to be a longer term thing, like you're running a refrigerator while tailgating in the back of the truck or something like that, you don't have to run your power cord through your window and leave it cracked, or you don't have to slam it in the door and hope it doesn't get damaged. When looking over the adapter, it looks really nice and solid, it's really well put together, the moldings all line up really well, it's not like some of them where you'll have a gap, a 16th or an eighth of an inch between where the two pieces come together.Overall, this would be definitely one that I would own, there is another option part number 118019. The exact same style of plug and the exact same quality. I feel like both of these are right in line quality-wise, but that one's going to offer two 12-Volt outlets, so rather than just charging your phone, maybe you can charge your phone and your speaker rather than just running a refrigerator, maybe you can do that and charge your phone. So I think if I had to pick between the two, I would go with 118019, I like having the two, why not Two's better than one, but outside of that, there's no reason in the world why this isn't going to do an excellent job for you..

Pollak 7-Way to 12 Volt Power Outlet Adapter - PK11896

Average Customer Rating:  4.7 out of 5 stars   (53 Customer Reviews)

by:

The 12V adapter was delivered on time, and works exactly as advertised. It plugs right into the existing 12V trailer-power outlet on my tow vehicle.

by:

I got this plug/converter so I could use the trailer outlet on my tractor for a revolving warning light. Works great!

by:

The 12 volt insert that you plug into this is too loose. Should fit tighter to make a better connection.

by:

Unit works fine. Actually a very simple piece.
What I did not think about is the fact that ignition has to be on to have power. At least that’s the way my new Nissan truck is.
Therefore 4 stars. Which is not really a fault of the product.

by:

Solved the problem of getting power into the pickup bed.

by:

Good Product

by:

This is exactly what I needed to power my electric air pump. The cord is too short to reach the trailer from the cab, so being able to plug in at the hitch is perfect. I can also easily inflate my air bags from this location, since my valve is on the back bumper. E trailer shipped this item fast, and I had it in just a few days. Great job!

by:

Product is handy for using it to power portable 12v air compressors without having to plug them into the cab. Excellent service as always from etrailer.

by:

A nice quick and easy way to utilize the 7 pin trailer electrical harness hookup for 12 VCD uses. I use it to power my Engel 12 VDC compressor refrigerator and 200 watt DC to AC inverter when hunting/fishing in the boonies.

by:

This nice little device makes it easy for me to run my 12v accessories while outside at the rear of my vehicle. My main goal for using this adapter is to enable the use of a small air compressor for either my vehicle's rear tires or to pressurize the air bag suspension.

by:

Great item, just remember that GM typically does not tie down the 12V for the trailer connectors. In late model trucks its coiled and taped under the master cylinder. It ties to the 40 amp lug on the front of the main fuse box on the drivers side engine compartment.

by:

Great product. Allowed me to use my 12V fridge without running additional wiring and installing another plug. For anything related to trailering and towing, I have found etrailer to be the go-to place to shop. Great selection of products, good prices and excellent customer service.

by:

the cooler plug wiggles in the hole which makes the contact not good.
the cooler plug has to sit a certain way for it to stay on if it gets bumped it stops working.

by:

Works just like it should. I Plug it into my 7 way RV plug in the the back of my F350 when on trips without an RV to run a 12V cooler. I have also run a light that runs off of 12V power while camping.

by:

A great way to provide 12V power to the bed of my truck...

by:

Exactly what I was looking for - use it to run small compressor to inflate air bags.

by:

On time as described thanks

A++++ super fast shipping

Doing great when I need it

by:

I bought this because the new tractor I bought has a 7-way outlet on it. It doesn't fit, too big for the outlet. I will keep it in my truck for my worklight. I guess receptacles are a different size in Korea!

by:

Very fast. Item as described. Always impressed with shopping experience at etrailer.com.

The adapter works just fine for any of my 12 volt accessories .

  • Connectors to Power an Electric Trailer Winch from a Vehicle Battery
Pollak 7-Way to 12 volt adapter # PK11896 can handle a 20 to 30 amp power draw but the limiting factor will be if the 7-Way on the vehicle is rated high enough as well. Check the fuse for the 12 volt circuit for the tow package trailer connector to make sure it is also rated high enough. Using an adapter like this is not traditionally how an electric winch is powered. It should have its own connector separate from the trailer connector. Your Blue Seas plug 1010 will work with the Pollak 7-Way to 12 Volt Power Outlet Adapter # PK11896. I did not see anything on that Blue Seas plug stating that a special outlet would be needed and the twist to lock feature seems to be exclusive to the plug end. The Pollak outlet locks into a 7-Way the same way that any 7-Way connector does; using the lid of the 7-Way to prevent the outlet from coming out.
