Recessed-Mount Light

Recessed Grommet Mount Trailer Light Installation Diagram

Recessed-mount trailer lights install with a grommet, which is often sold separately. These lights extend past the trailer surface and require a hole for installation. If replacing a light, you can utilize the pre-existing hole. If installing a new light, you will need to cut a hole or use a mounting bracket (sold separately) to complete the installation.

Video Transcript for Peterson Trailer Lights - Tail Lights - 429800 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 429800. This is the Peterson Round Red Trailer Taillight. This taillight is going to provide your stop, turn, and taillight functions. It is designed to be a flush mountain design. You can see that we have the nice mounting flange that's going to contain 3 mounting holes. That's going to need to be mounted in a hole with a diameter of 4 and a half inches, so measuring from this point here to this point here.

Up closer to the flange, so right here to the same point on the other side. That's going to give us a measurement of about 4 and a half inches. That tells us the size of hole that this would actually mount into. We're going to have a stainless steel housing. We're going to have the reflector built into the lens on the light. That goes right around the perimeter there.

This is going to feature a 2 wire design. You're going to have your red wire for your stop and turn signal. Brown wire for your power for the taillights or running lights. Then the units designed to ground through the mounting hardware. Now your mounting hardware's not included, that is going to be sold separately but it grounds through the mounting hardware.

It's going to use a snap ring or retaining ring to hold the lens in place. That's really easy to remove, I just push a screwdriver in there and then you can pry it a little bit just to take the tension off. That's going to remove and then that's going to allow the lens and the gasket to fall out. That's going to allow you to gain access to the inside right here in case you ever need to change the bulb. This is going to use bulb 1157, it's going to sit in a brass socket so it's easily replaceable if needed. Then to get this reinstalled simply just place the gasket back down in there, place the lens on top.

Then we'll take our ring, squeeze it together until we get it to fit back inside, it will snap into place. Pretty simple, again the bulb is going to sit in that brass socket. The light itself is SAE and Department of Transportation compliant. If we take that diameter measurement of just the light, measuring basically just the lens, we're looking at about a 4 inch measurement. Outer diameter from outer edge to outer edge is going to be about 5 and a half inches. The depth on the light from very back to very front, you're looking at about 1 and 5/8ths of an inch. Then, again, it's going to contain 3 mounting holes. The distance that we have between our mounting holes measuring on center, that's going to give us a measurement of 4 and 1/4 of an inch. That should be the same for each set, so center on center, 4 and 1/4. Now we're going to go and hook this up to our external power that way you can see what the light looks like when it's turned on. We'll also be able to turn off our overhead light so you can see in a low light setting. Here you can see the light has got a nice consistent signal. This is going to be the taillight or running light function of the light. Then when we apply our brakes you can see how that illuminates for a brighter signal output. Then when we activate our turn signals it's going to do that same thing just in increments. That's going to do it for today's look at part number 429800.

1981 Chevy C20 Utility Pick-up Truck - Perfect fit replacement. Disconnected the old wires, connected the new light. Brake, turn and running lights all work. Put heat shrink on the wires first, soldered the wires together, do one final test, flame it with a lighter to shrink the wrap. Looks and works great.

They are laying on a shelf and do as I expected laying there. Must complete trailer restoration to see how they work.

I chose these for my husband’s 2000 GMC Utility bed truck, from your detailed video, and measurements I took to compare to the video! They are going to fit perfectly! This may help others with the same model and year truck with utility bed.

One year later and the taillight still works like new. Pulled the horse trailer from Texas to Minnesota and back. No issues. Great product and the installation was easy.

This purchase was to replace original equipment lights that became rusted after two years of use. These replacement lights show no rust and have been operationally trouble-free in a salt-air environment since I installed them. They are 5 star quality and inexpensive. Mine still look new.

See what our Experts say about this Peterson Trailer Lights

  • Can a 4 Inch Round Trailer Tail Light Be Riveted On
The LED Trailer Tail Light w/ Reflector part # STL13RFHXB could hold up to a rivet gun or it could not, there are really too many variables to advise on this but if you were to use the Stainless Steel Trim Ring part # A5TRSSB over the mounting flange I believe that would then allow you to use a rivet gun without breaking the plastic. There is also the option of the Peterson Trailer Tail Light w/ Stainless Steel Housing part # 429800 but this has an incandescent bulb, not an LED.

  • Is there a Trailer Tail Light that Matches Peterson Back Up Light # 411SC
We do not have an exact match for a red round tail light like the Peterson Back Up Light, # 411SC, that you have referenced that is a flange mount. The closest flange mounted lights are going to be the Peterson round tail lights # 431800 and # 432000. For a flush mounted light, you could use # 429800 which may be more what you are looking for. We also have the Optronics brand flange mounts # STL42RB or # ST47RB. They use wiring harness # A45PB.

  • What Wire Gauge Should be Used to Install Peterson Trailer Tail Light # 429800
Trailer light wiring is usually 14 to 18 gauge. But we have 4-Way flat trailer wiring harnesses all ready to go. I have included a link to the options for you. We have some as short as 1 foot long all the way up to the 40 foot long # A40W42B.

  • What is the Difference Between a Snap Ring and Retainer Ring for a Trailer Tail Light
There really isn't a difference. Snap-ring and retaining ring such as # 410-21 are two names for the same thing. If your tail light looks like # ST40RB then use # A40SRB. But you mentioned that the light was 4 inches, which is what Peterson light # 429800 is. So for that light use # 410-21. Shipping can vary depending on the option you choose and where you live. So take a look at the link to the right that explains more about shipping and how to determine cost.
