Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

3500# trailer needed a little stiffer spring, nice fit and quality compared to 3500# springs.

by:

Fit like a glove and delivered on time! Of course we'll need to use them before we can really rate them but so far so good!

by:

Excellent choice for my 2019 Cherokee WolfPup 16BHS. Originally speced with 3500# springs, were completely flat in four years. These returned 3-4” of clearance. Perfect fit. Strongly recommend.

by:

Packing is atrocious and shipping is trash. Didn’t ship my whole order, chose to ship via 2 different shippers because it was cheaper for them to do so. Ship dates were not honored as posted on site when ordering.

by:

Working very well. Restored my trailers load capacity.

by:

Everything did fit but with some persuasion. Probably my trailer. The shipping however was a week past the “estimated delivery date”. That’s the reason for the three stars. When I called to find out why, I was told that was an estimated date. When your boat trailer is down and you want to fish that’s not a very good estimate.

by:

Thx to Josh B for all his help! Etrailer is the place to do business. They understand customer service.

by:

It all arrived earlier than expected. There was 2 broken plastic bushings that were put in the same box as the springs, but I was able to use a couple of the older ones.

by:

The best!

Very pleased

No problems.

by:

What excellent service I received. I received my shipment promptly and one of my items was ordered incorrectly. I wish I had known but was not too bummed. It was probably my mistake. When I called to re-order the rep recommended I go right to the manufacturer for the special part, and gave me the number. etrailer credited my credit card for the incorrect part and because it was not an expensive item did not require me to return it. Thank You!!!

by:

  • How to Determine the Right Replacement Double-Eye Leaf Spring for a Golf Cart Trailer
To choose replacement leaf springs you would have to go by the measurements of the old springs and the capacity of the axle (or individual spring). The # e44SR spring measures 25-1/4 inches from eye center to eye center. And it is rated for 2,500 pounds for a 5,000 pound axle. Springs should also be replaced in pairs. To measure a spring you will need to have the weight off of it. A worn spring will flatten out some so the measurements may not be exactly the same as a new spring. I have...

  • Can Heavier Leaf Springs Be Used On Tandem-Axle Boat Trailer
You can use heavier-duty leaf springs like part # e44SR on your tandem axle boat trailer. The dimensions of the springs are the same so you will have no problem installing the new springs. The ride may be a bit stiffer with the new springs but they will work just fine on your trailer. Putting heavier springs on your trailer will not increase the weight capacity for the trailer. Since you mentioned you are replacing the suspension I have attached some links to suspension components that...

  • Does Adding an Axle to a Trailer Double its Capacity
The axle capacity for a trailer does double when you add a second one to a trailer. This does not mean the trailer has double the capacity since the frame of the trailer may have the capacity. A trailer's overall capacity is only as strong as it's weakest link. That could be the axles, tires, suspension, trailer frame, coupler, etc. The best way to pick out leaf springs is to pick a set that matches the capacity for the axles/trailer the best. If you have 3,500 lb axles you would want...

  • Torque Rating Requirements for Installing Leaf Springs on a 7000 lb Tandem Axle Trailer
The torque requirements for leaf spring u-bolts depend on the diameter of the u-bolts that are being used. If the gross weight of your tandem axle trailer is 7,000 lbs, then you likely have two 3,500 lb axles. Typically 1/2 inch diameter u-bolts are used with leaf springs for 3,500 lb axles and they have a torque rating of 45 ft/lbs to 70 ft/lbs. The shackle bolts do not require a specific torque rating because tightening the shackle bolts too much will squeeze the shackle straps against...

For your Dexter 072-078-00 axle, I recommend going with the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles # e44SR. These leaf springs are the same length as your current springs but are going to have a higher capacity at 5,000 lbs.

  • Recommended Spring Eye Diameter Bolt for 9/16 Inch Hole on my Boat Trailers Leaf Spring

  • Correct Replacement for Dexter Leaf Spring 072-078-00
The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring part # e44SR is what I recommend using to replace your Dexter Leaf Spring 072-078-00. It's the same length but a slightly higher capacity, 4,400 lbs vs. 5,000 lbs which is not much so it won't really affect the ride and they will last slightly longer.

  • How To Choose Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a Pontoon Boat Trailer
In order to find the correct replacement leaf spring for a trailer you first need to start by noting the type whether that be slipper or double eye. Then, you'll need to measure their unloaded length via jacking up the trailer. If the springs are worn they will measure longer than their replacement. Lastly, you will need to note the axle capacity which is found on the tag in the center of the beam. Please note, the number of leaves does not really denote capacity as leaves have different...

  • Trailer Hanger Spacing and Installation for Trailer Fabrication
Correct hanger spacing really depends on the components being used such as springs, hangers and equalizers. Most of the hanger spacing dimensions that we have are based on our preassembled kits. A good spacing to start with is 29-1/2 inches between the front and center hanger and 29-1/2 inches between the rear and center hanger. Remember,...

  • How to Determine Where to Put Trailer Axles on 18 Foot Dovetail Trailer
There is a way for you to find out exactly where to place the center hanger of your 18 foot tandem axle trailer. If you take a look at the diagram I added, which is part of a help article I also linked on how to determine where to put your trailer's suspension components, you can see that there is not a set distance. Instead you will need to use the formulas you see in the diagram to ensure the axle placement will allow 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight on the tongue. I highly...

  • Which Orientation are Leaf Springs Installed In
The 12-5/8 inch dimension from the spring eye to the cinch bolt of the # e44SR leaf spring (dimension C in the diagram) is symmetrical, so the spring could be mounted in either direction. Customarily, the end of the spring with the band wrapped around it is placed forward of the axle, closest to the front of the trailer, but it really makes no difference. On leaf springs that are asymmetrical, the shorter distance would be forward of the axle.

  • How to Select Correct Replacement Trailer Leaf Springs
The best way to measure a trailer spring for purposes of selecting a replacement is to remove it completely from the suspension. It is also important to note that leaf springs will tend to elongate over time as they wear. I made a call to my contact at Rockwell American and was able to obtain some information on the springs that are currently on your 2004 Cardinal travel trailer. Your current springs, 93103, have an axle capacity of 4,400 lbs, are 1-3/4 inch wide, and measure 25-1/4 inches from center eye to center eye so the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring, # e44SR, will work for you. • Troubleshooting Not Enough Clearance After Lower Trailer Leaf Spring Capacity
Typical leaf spring deflection is right at 1-1/2 inches so if you have only 1 inch of clearance it could be that you don't have enough clearance but most likely the springs are worn out or the wrong capacity. Since you lowered the spring and axle capacity I'd be most inclined to believe the issue is that. For a standard length 5,000 lb axle capacity leaf spring the # e44SR would work great. This is 25-1/4 inches long.
