How to Choose Correctly Rated Trailer Leaf Springs for Single Axle

Question:

I have a trailer that carries water and weighs 4,500 lbs. Should springs be sized such that they are continuously riding at their maximum weight rating? Is a pair of e44SR with a rating of 5,000 lbs a good choice for this trailer?

Ideally the leaf springs on your trailer simply match or just slightly exceed the weight capacity of the axle. Leaf springs that are rated too high compared to the trailer's weight can lead to a rougher ride on the road.

The axle capacity should be stamped right on the unit itself or it may be on the trailer's main information tag located on the frame up towards the coupler. If your trailer typically has a loaded weight of around 4,500 pounds though, there's a good chance that the axle has a 5,000 pound weight capacity. This means the 4-Leaf # e44SR that you referenced would be a good choice, assuming it's the right length.

This particular leaf spring stack has an eye-to-eye length of 25-1/4" and a width of 1-3/4". I have attached a great article on double-eye leaf springs that you might also find helpful.
