How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This review is more for etrailer than the product. I highly recommend etrailer. They were very professional & kind. Product was received sooner than they said. All good things. I installed the trailer jack today and it seems like a good quality piece. It's easy to wind and with the drop leg, it extends high enough for the hitch on my truck. Thank you guys for the great service!

by:

Excellent product - fast delivery. Loved how the video showed a person handling and measuring the product, but what I really wanted to see was what hardware was included and an install demonstration. Either way, the jack works great. I used two of them on my toy hauling pop-up to support the weight of my side-by-side and act as stabilizer jacks.

by:

Very happy with my new trailer jack. This is a trailer my dad and I built in 1997. I use it to mainly haul seed for my job. It also gets used for recreation and other stuff. It had a jack with a wheel and was also too short, which meant I had to use a block and lots of wheel chocks. Should have done awhile ago, but never found a suitable jack in stores. I bolted to frame instead of using u-bolts using 6 grade 8 bolts.

by:

Very easy transaction. Fair price and super fast shipping.
Thanks for the good service.

I am so sorry, that is so frustrating. I checked and it looks like our customer service team is already on this and will be sending you the missing parts!

This is probably the best buy on the market today for a trailer jack! This jack arrived packed very well with all the hardware needed to install it. it installed on my car trailer in less than an hour in my driveway. It is very well built and thanks to Rose at the order desk I received excellent help in choosing the correct jack for my trailer. If you are buying from someone else, you probably won't get the same quality for your money. Thanks etrailer.com you have me as a lifetime customer.

by:

Great Jack it's what I expected, Thank you very much

I have a short shaft on my trailer that could not utilize a conventional trailer jack. The drop leg jack is built well and does the job! I received the jack several days after I ordered it, which was great.

Great! Well constructed. I have a short shaft on my home made trailer and could not use a conventional trailer jack. This was a great option and it has held up very good. Great product and worth the money!

by:

I ordered this trailer jack as direct replacement for my Coastline trailer. The jack has worked flawlessly over the last year since my purchase. Buy with confidence.

by:

Yes for anyone looking to replace that old jack this thing rocks.I have a 24 foot cabin cruiser and needed the heavy duty jack with the 23" of lift and this unit fits 100% very smooth and I like the fact that there is not a wheel on it way safer. The install is also way easy.I would highly recommend this for anything with in the 2500# rating .

Real nice ! 5 stars...

The jack is solid and was very easy to install. It has a grease fitting for future lubrication when needed. The lift was as described in terms of height. All in all this is a very solid Jack which you will enjoy.

The jack continues to perform flawlessly

by:

I purchased this to replace a vintage (think rusty, sticky and generally obstinate) jack. The ordering process was easy, communication from the vendor was excellent and the shipping was fast. Installation took all of about 5 minutes after the rustyjackectomy was performed. The drop leg part of the jack has saved me from carrying around the vintage accessory that came with the jack, a cinderblock to put under the non-functioning wheel at the end of the rustystickobstinate jack. Freedom! There is a smallish foot on the new jack which provides adequate stability and resistance to sinking on soft ground, something that we have lots of here in the Pacific NW. Additionally, this new jack sports a zerk fitting which may help stave off the rustystickyobstinate syndrome that afflicted the original. All in all, this represents a significant improvement to my trailer jacking activities.

by:

Good heavy jack, easy bolt on mount. Nice leg extension to shorten the cranking to lift the trailer.

Jim

1/26/2018

Still the same. Its working great.

by:

This jack was a replacement for a deteriorating jack on my v nose snowmobile trailer. The salt and weather were taking it's toll and the fixed jack was mounted somewhat too low so it occasionally would bottom out on transitions from the road to parking lots. This jack when mounted to my tongue is higher and the drop leg feature still lets me jack it high enought to remove from my truck. Hopefully the Nickel plating will give me a longer service life than the previous painted version that was on my trailer originally. I also like the fact that this jack has a grease fitting to be able to lubricate the internals. Nice jack so far.

by:

Perfect answer to tipping up my boat trailer enough to get bilge to drain.

Used to have to use a cinder block + 2 pieces of wood, crank up the wheel jack (that came on the trailer), put wood under tongue, crank down wheel jack, put in cinder block on its side under wheel, crank up wheel jack, put 2nd (longer) piece of wood under tongue, crank down wheel jack, put cinder block under wheel on it's end (not the most stable arrangement), crank up wheel jack.... it really kinda sucked!!!

Now, I use the wheel jack (that came on the trailer) to detach from tow vehicle and crank it up all the way, Then on the Drop Leg Jack, pull & reposition the pin on drop leg so leg extends fully (2 seconds), and crank up the Drop Leg Jack all the way, done!

by:

Quality product and easy to install

by:

Installed his Jack on a 27 foot deck over snowmobile trailer after going through a fold up styled wheeled Jack a year. After a year it's as sturdy as the day I installed the. Very happy.

by:

The sub-standard trailer jacks with a wheel that come with all trailers are junk. They are good for two years before they just won't crank. Their limited adjustment required me to take bottle jacks and blocks of wood to hitch and un-hitch! I highly recommend this product because of it's huge adjustability range, and who needs a wheel on the jack of any boat that weighs more than 3000 lbs! , actually could be hazardous.
Get it , you won't regret it!

by:

I purchased this jack a year ago for use on a 4 place snowmobile trailer that moves around the salty winter roads of the northeast. Great jack, no rust, powerful jack, smart purchase.

by:

Operates smoothly.

by:

The jack is great ! Heavy duty and very rugged. The only thing that may be improved is the mounting bar used on the back side of the trailer channel. It needs to be a bit "beefier". My bar bent slightly when I tightened the retaining bolts.

by:

We put a pair of these on our aluminum trailer, to stabilize it when loading the utility tractor. They work great, you can lower the leg to the desired length and then just a couple cranks and the trailer is stable. Great product ,I would definitely recommend.

by:

The wheels and tongue jack I ordered for my boat trailer arrived quickly and well packaged. Thanks to the information on eTrailer pages on how to measure for wheels, the wheels fit the hub perfectly. The trailer jack is not yet installed, but appears to be of good quality. Now, just waiting on the water to warm up to launch the boat and take the grand daughter swimming and boating.

The Pro Series Square Jack, # PS1400800383, is a weld-on jack. Once you start getting to higher capacities, like 5,000 pounds, you will see less and less bolt-on options. For a bolt on jack with a 2,500 pound capacity, we have # DL22320. Given the weight of a loaded car hauler this may not be enough. A weld-on jack like you referenced would be more ideal. Welding should be performed by a qualified professional welder.

When the jack is off the ground, you can remove that bottom pin to lower or raise the foot in 3-1/2 inch increments, then replace the pin. This is used so you would not have to do as much cranking.
