Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-393-4UC3

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Dexter 12 1/4 inch Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Has the 9/16 inch diameter wheel studs, and it's for the 7,200 pound axles that are manufactured after 1999. Now this trailer hub and drum assembly provides the surface area for your brake shoes to grip when your brakes are activated. If you look in the back here, you can see here's the area where your hydraulic drum brakes will apply, and then if you use electric brakes, they'll apply right on here.

So it is compatible with both electric and hydraulic drum brakes. It is a sturdy iron construction, and this part number does include all these parts here shown on the table. Let me just get this back up here. There we go. It'll include the hub and drum assembly itself.

It includes the bearing races, which are pre-installed. The outer and the inner bearing races are pre-installed. Comes with the inner bearing. The outer bearing comes with the grease seal, the grease cap, and then eight of the 9/16 by 18 size lug nuts. Now the part numbers for these bearings and grease seals and cap, they're all listed on the bottom of the product page of this part number.

Drum dimension. The diameter, gonna lift it up again just to show you, but that diameter if we measured across, is gonna be 12 1/4 inches. The width is gonna be from here to here, 3 1/4 inches wide. Now it is designed to work with the brake assemblies that are 12 1/4 inch by 2 1/2 inches wide. Application again.

This will fit 7,200 pound axles that are manufactured after 1999, and the reason that is after 1999, they upgraded from a 9-bolt brake flange to a 4-bolt brake flange, and they don't interchange. So this is designed for the axles that we're manufactured after 1999. Bolt pattern, we mentioned, is an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. It does accept the wheel size of 16 inch up to 17 1/2 inches. Wheel stud diameter of 9/16 of an inch, and the weight capacity on this one, assembly is 3,600 pounds. So when this is matched with one on the other side, it meets the 7,200 pound rating of your axle. But that should do it for the review on this Dexter 12 1/4 inch Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern, 9/16 wheel studs for the 7,200 pound axles manufactured after 1999.

Very pleased with the service and prompt delivery only thing was I only got 7 lug nuts instead of 8 and the studs aren’t really long enough because the studs don’t come all the way out of nuts

  • Replacement Hub and Drums For PJT Trailer With 008-393-03 Installed
Thanks for all of the information on your PJT Trailer! Based on your drum part number you have a 12-1/4" Drum that is oil bath. The Dexter # 8-393-4UC3 is almost right, but it is designed for grease and not oil. You will need the # 8-393-4UC3 and oil seal # 10-63 for each hub. This hub does not include the bearings so you will also need new inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 02475 for each hub. If you need replacement brakes now or in the future you will need # 23-428-429 for...

  • Comparing Dexter Hub and Drum Assemblies 8-285-11 and 8-393-4UC3
You will experience some reduced braking power when using the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-393-4UC3 with 12-1/4 x 2-1/2" brake assemblies compared to the # 8-285-11 with 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" brake assemblies. Between the two I recommend going with the # 8-285-11 along with bearings # 25580 and # 02475, grease seals # RG06-070, lug nuts # 6-53, and grease caps # rg04-120. For brakes I recommend the self adjusting braking assemblies # 23-434-435. Since you mentioned your axle does...

  • Can Dexter Hub & Drum 8-393-4UC3 be Used as Oil Bath Hub
If you prefer an oil bath, you can do so with the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 7,200-lb Axles Manufactured After 1999 # 8-393-4UC3. What you would need are the Unitized Oil Seal # 10-63 and Oil Cap, Plug and O-Ring for Dexter 7-9K Trailer Axles # RG04-230. Having said that, I recommend sticking with grease as opposed to oil. While oil can be less maintenance, they are both prone to leaks and don't keep water out of hubs as well as a grease cap. The issue with this is that...
