Comparing Dexter Hub and Drum Assemblies 8-285-11 and 8-393-4UC3
Question:
is the only difference breaking power as the drum is narrower? seen the 393 has a 5/8 stud as the 285 has 9/16. uses the same bearings and seals. heaviest I haul is 15,000 and i have no breaks now.

You will experience some reduced braking power when using the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-393-4UC3 with 12-1/4 x 2-1/2" brake assemblies compared to the # 8-285-11 with 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" brake assemblies.
Between the two I recommend going with the # 8-285-11 along with bearings # 25580 and # 02475, grease seals # RG06-070, lug nuts # 6-53, and grease caps # rg04-120. For brakes I recommend the self adjusting braking assemblies # 23-434-435. Since you mentioned your axle does not current have brakes you will need to make sure your axle has a brake mounting flange behind the idler hub or a local axle shop will need to install one for you.
You will also need mounting hardware # BRKH122508 and dust shields # D036-115-20.
Your trailer should already have a 7-way connector since it is capable of towing 15000lbs so you will just need to run # 10-1-1 from the brake output wire on the 7-way to each brake assembly with heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-5.
Lastly with electric trailer brakes installed you will need to make sure your tow vehicle has a functional 7-way connector and trailer brake controller. If you do not just let me know the Year/Make/Model of your tow vehicle and I would be happy to make a recommendation for you.
I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
