Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

See what our Experts say about this Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums

  • How Much Bearing Preload Should be On Dexter 8k Axle
There is not an exact torque specification to pre-load the bearings on a Dexter 8k axle. The spindle nut will need to be tightened by hand until finger tight and then turned another 1/4 of a turn with a wrench. This will be around 15 ft-lbs but you should not be using any sort of torque wrench for this. Once this is done you can then turn the hub ten or so times to seat the bearings and races but don't forget to back the spindle nut off some before you install the cotter pin and put the...

  • How to Tell if Trailer Hub 8-258 Will Fit Spindle
We do have the Dexter trailer hub and drum part # 8-285-9UC3 which might work but you would need to verify a few things. This is an 8k oil-bath hub with a bolt pattern of 8 on 6-1/2 inches. The bearings it takes are 25580 Inner / 02475 Outer. You would need to pull the hubs you have to get the bearing numbers or the dimensions where the bearings ride. If those dimensions are 1.74 inch and 1.25 inch this hub would fit.

  • Replacement Oil Bath Hub and Drum Assembly for 8K Dexter Axle
If just the spindle is damaged then you could probably get away with just replacing the spindle, but if the axle is damaged then you'll to replace the whole axle. If you aren't sure how much is damaged then you might want to have a shop look at your trailer just to make sure you have a safe setup. We do have replacement hub/drum assemblies that use the oil bath setup but for spindles and an axle that large you'll need to have a shop place that order for you. For the hub/drums you'll need...

  • Replacement Hub/Drum for Lippert 8k Hub 2420801
The Lippert 2420801 hub is an 8k hub with an 8 lug bolt pattern so for a replacement you'd just need the part # 8-285-10UC3-A.

  • Replacement Oil Bath Hub Drum for 8 on 6-1/2 Bolt Pattern on 8,000 lb Axle
The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 8,000-lb Axles - 8 on 6-1/2 - Oil Bath # 8-285-10UC3-A is the replacement option we have. The only difference is the wheel studs are 5/8 inches instead or the 9/16 inch wheel studs of your current hub. This comes with the lug nuts you need as well, so it will be an easy swap and will fit your wheels.

  • Can Lippert 8K Axle be Converted to Oil
Yes you can convert your Lippert 8K axle so that it works with oil instead of grease. Just swap out your hub and drum assembly with one that has threads for the oil cap to install on. For example, the Dexter Axle part # 8-285-9UC3 should work just fine but you need to verify that the inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 02475 are correct as well as the oil seal with the 2.250" inner diameter. If this fits then the only other thing you need is bearing oil like part # XLPROLUBE. Please...

  • Replacement Hubs for 8000lb Lippert Axle
Yes, the Dexter Hub Assembly # 8-285-9UC3 will fit on your Lippert Axle, but after checking with Lippert it looks like the 8k axle that you're using originally came with a hub with 5/8" stud diameter, where this Dexter Hub has 9/16" studs- both hubs use inner bearing # 25580 /outer bearing # 02475 . In order to avoid having to change out your wheels as well, I recommend going with the Redline Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-285-10UC3-A . It is also an oil lubricated hub, has 5/8" studs and will...

The Dexter Hub part # 8-285-9UC3 comes with bearings and seal but does not come with lug nuts. For that you would need part # 6-53 since the studs are 9/16 inch.

  • How Much Torque Should I Put On Spindle Bolt On Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-285-9UC3
For a trailer axle spindle nut like part # 165686 you will need to run the spindle nut down until there is no more side-to-side play in the hub and then back it off to the next notch so you can secure the cotter pin, like part # 165649, through the spindle. There is not a specific torque to follow for the nut. If you have any further questions please reach back out to me and I will be more than happy to further assist you in your towing endeavors.

  • Can Dexter Nev-R-Lube Hubs Be Replaced with Oil Bath Hubs
The existing Dexter 8K Nev-R-Lube spindles on your trailer are designed specifically for the cartridge-style bearing that the corresponding Nev-R-Lube Hubs # 8-389-81UC3 use. The spindles themselves are uniquely sized for this purpose so unfortunately the hubs can't be replaced with standard hubs that use traditional inner and outer bearings, including oil-bath units like the Dexter 8K # 8-285-9UC3 that you referenced. The only way to switch to hubs like this would be to replace the entire...

  • Replacement Electric Drum Brakes and Hub/Drum Assembly for Dexter Axle
I was able to contact Dexter Axle and get the information on your axle. The p12 that you referred to has to do with the location of the plant that manufactured your axle. The direct replacement for your drum brakes would be the Right Hand Assembly # 23-435 and the Left Hand Assembly # 23-434. These are the self-adjusting brakes with the 4 bolt pattern to match with your brake mounting flange. The Hub & Drum Assembly - 8 on 6-1/2 - Oil Bath # 8-285-9UC3 comes with the correct hub, drum,...
