Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums 9-27-1 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-1/4 inch Trailer Brake Drum for 10,000 pound heavy duty Dexter axles. Now this part will add or replace a non-ABS brake drum to a Dexter 10,000 pound oil bath hub assembly that we sell separately on our website. It's part number 8-214-5UC1. This will install on a 10,000 pound heavy duty Dexter axle. The trailer drum is what will provide the surface area for your brake shoes to grip when the brake is activated. This drum is compatible with non-ABS electric and hydraulic drum brakes.

It is a sturdy iron construction. Now the mounting bolts to install the hub assembly and this brake drum to the axle, we sell separately, it's part number 7-244. This part is made in the U.S.A.A few dimensions on this. The drum dimension, we're going to measure the diameter, which is inside to inside. It's right at 12-1/4 inches.

The width on this drum is 4-1/2 inches. This drum is designed for a brake assembly size of 12-1/4 inch diameter x 4 inches wide. The pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center, the diameter of that is 4-3/4 inches. Now the hole diameter, right here, that the hub assembly will bolt to, on this is going to measure center to center, if you go directly across, 7-1/2 inches. The hub assembly, it's designed for a hub assembly that will have a bolt pattern measurement of 8 on 6-1/2 inches.

The weight capacity on this drum is 5,000 pounds so when this is used with one on the other side, it'll meet the 10,000 pound capacity on the Dexter Axle. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12-1/4 inch Trailer Brake Drum for 10,000 pound heavy duty Dexter axles.

  • Switching My Electric Drum Brakes to Hydraulic Drum Brakes on Dexter 10k Axles
We carry disc brake kits for the Dexter 10K Standard Duty axle. Unfortunately, there is no disc brake kit available through our venders that fits the Dexter 10K Heavy Duty Axle. You could upgrade to a hydraulic drum brake system from your electric drum brakes. You will need Dexter Left Hand Hydraulic Brake Assembly # 23-404 and the Right Hand Brake Assembly # 23-405. If your drums need to be replaced, you will need Brake Drum Assembly # 9-27-1. You can remove your hubs off your current...

  • Are Drums Interchangeable When Replacing Hydraulic Brakes With Electric Brakes
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains all of the components needed for adding electric drum brakes to a trailer. We always recommend replacing all of the components at one time so you are sure everything works well. If you check out your 9-44 drum you currently have and the inside surface shows no signs of wear or damage you can use them when changing from hydraulic to electric brakes. I spoke with my contact at Dexter and they told me that all you would have to replace...

  • Replacement Hub and Drum for Dexter 10K Axles with 008-214-05 Hubs
The hub you need is # 8-214-5UC1. Since it is separate from the drum you would not need to replace both unless it is time to replace the drum as well if it is worn or damage. If it is then the drum part is # 9-27-1. We also have the mounting bolt for this hub assembly, # 7-103.

  • Correct Oil Seal for Dexter 10K 8-214-5UC1 Hub/9-27 Brake Drum
The 9-27 (it's 9-27-1, actually) brake drum is part of a 2 piece hub/drum that uses # 8-214-5UC1 for the oil bath hub assembly. The correct oil seal is part # 10-56. The seal has an OD of 4.5 inches, and an ID of 3.125 inches. The # 10-63 you'd mentioned is too small, as its typically used with 8K capacity axles, so it wouldn't be compatible.

  • Brakes and Hub and Drum Assembly Replacement for Dexter 10K Axles
It sounds like you have 10K axles, in which you can use the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - Self-Adjusting # 23-439 for the right hand side, and # 23-438 for the left hand side. For brake drums / hub assembly you can use the Dexter Trailer Brake Drum for 10,000-lb Axles # 9-27-1 with the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 10,000-lb Axles # 8-214-5UC1.
