  I spoke with my contact in the engineering department at Curt, who tells me that by 'outboard mounted spare tire', they mean that if the vehicle's spare tire carrier is bolted to the bumper beam, the spacer plate is needed. If it's bolted elsewhere, the spacer will not be needed. If you'll be towing with the hitch, you'll also need a trailer wiring harness like # C59496, a ball mount like # 2753 and a trailer ball like # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.

  The Curt # 13018 hitch you referenced only fits the Mercedes ML320 up through the 2002 model year. The rear structure of the vehicle changed between then and the 2008 model year, so the hitch unfortunately won't fit your vehicle, and it's not recommended that the hitch or vehicle be modified to make it fit. Curt does offer a hitch fit for your 2008 ML320, as long as it doesn't have the air ride suspension, you can use the # 13342 hitch.
