Why Fold-Down Steps Are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the StepAbove steps with strut assist make it easy to use the steps. The gas-powered struts are built in on either side of the assembly and use air pressure to easily lift, lower, and hold the steps in place in any position. The struts also keep the steps in place when folded into your doorway. They make maneuvering the steps so easy you can do it with one finger.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has a backplate with large holes. These holes make it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up into your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 2 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measuring your RV entry height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 36-1/2" and 42-1/2".

If you find that you have a smaller or larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measuring your RV doorway width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 27-3/4" wide and 28-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measuring your RV threshold height

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

Measuring your RV threshold gap

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

When I received my steps the box was heavily damaged. When I went to install the steps I found that they were bent. I contacted etrailer the representative said it was a shipping problem and he would have to get back to me.

I'll make sure our customer service team reaches back out to you about this!

Arrived undamaged and in excellent condition. These steps are solid vs. typical RV steps. The hydraulic assist is a must if you have a partner with height or strength issues.

by:

Shipping and installation is 5 Stars. My issue is the sides of the steps as it seems as they were crushed when installed. This is a finish and final inspection issue. The sides of the steps where they meet the frame. I have included pictures. They work well.

It is frustrating when a package arrives damaged. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

Excellent update to our 2017 Heartland Road Warrior. Also installed friction hinges to replace the factory door limiter arm to keep the door from slamming into the side of the RV. Purchased the Strut Assist as well for one finger lifting

My relationship with the MORryde steps is a love/hate relationship. I purchased these steps as a replacement for the generation 1 steps that came with the trailer after I damaged the original steps. I love that the steps rest on the ground resulting in a solid step with no sponginess when you step on them. I also like that when folded up they protect the screen door from our dog, I hate that any dirt on the steps drops onto the floor when they are stored and that you could could be prevented from deploying or storing them in a tight space due to their swing arc. The generation 2 steps with the detent deployment of the extension is a great improvement over the original pins.

The steps are working fine after a year. The pros and cons remain.

by:

All looks good, packaging, delivery on schedule and steps. My only gripe would be packages for 12 screws were included but no screws. Lazy with the tape that should have held them in the little plastic containers. Minor but irritating..

by:

It was finally time to upgrade the steps. Product arrived with some damage to the box but the steps were good to go. Have to rebuild my bottom step in the 5th to accommodate the hinge. I had a Lippert step brace for the factory steps but it is getting harder to keep our balance on them as they are steeper than the new one so the new steps will be safer and more solid.

by:

After a year of use, these have been well worth every cent! These should have been an addition much earlier! The ease of dropping these and putting them away is indescribable. Our previous set were collapsable and not easy to do. These are perfect!!

by:

After one year and approximately 10,000 miles of travel, here steps are in perfect shape with no issues. These stairs with the addition hand rail make it much safer going in and out of the fifth wheel. Adjustable legs make it easy to adjust for every situation. Highly recommend these stairs.

by:

dear E trailer these new MORyde step above RV steps are great, I purchased these after my wife and a friend of ours slipped and fell going up or down our old fold out steps. these steps are sturdy well made and were easy to install. they are much safer then our old ones. thank you

by:

If you are an RV owner, this is a must have. Rocksolid ,no rocking in RVs no more and very easy installation. adjustable feet for different terrain elevations.Just make sure you sweep of the steps before you stow the step in RV other wise the debris will fall inside your camper floor. 100% MUST HAVE !!!

This bad rating isn't so much for the product as it is for etrailer's horrible customer service. **Use the manufacturer's website to determine which item to order because etrailer's site info is not complete**. If you rely on only their info and therefore receive a product you can't use, they will tell will charge you not only the shipping fee to return it but go back and charge you the shipping fee *to you* to reduce your refund as much as possible. Their refund policy is hidden on the website and no link is given from the product page for you to review. While their refund policy does state that they won't charge those fees if the error is theirs (let's say by not putting all of the specifications on their product description) that they won't charge these fees. However, they say that they aren't responsible for what is listed on the product page and therefore won't take any responsibility. It has been weeks since the stairs were picked up and still no refund at all. Federal law states 7 business days but they feel they are exempt from that and told me to call a lawyer. So far they have had my, almost $xxx, for a month and I still have no stairs to replace the dangerously broken stairs that caused a fall and serious injury. Morryde's customer service is absolutely amazing though. They have been trying to get etrailer to be reasonable but they couldn't even convince them. So if you have to buy from etrailer, know that their info is incomplete and that you will be held financially responsible for their incomplete website. If they ever send the refund at all. I highly recommend ordering parts that require a lot of measuring from another retailer that gives the full information and has good customer support, especially if you're paying this much.

When it comes to refunds, we cannot issue a refund until the item is back in our possession. So it is 7 business days, after the product is in our possession.

We love these steps on our fifth wheel. They are super sturdy and we feel much safer than the original steps. They only complaint I have was the shims which the installation instructions stated were included were missing as well as 3 screws. Nothing a quick run to the hardware store couldn’t fix.

by:

Enjoy the strut assist it's a back save r.

by:

The stairs work great! Only issue was the shipping company ESTES. They took forever. The shipment left your dock on 9/1 and I received the stairs on 9/12.

by:

An excellent product! Replaced similar steps that I had damaged.

by:

I put these on my 2011 outback 5th wheel and absolutely love them. Shipping was faster than expected. I did have to modify my screen door a little but I knew that when ordering these. Install only took about 30 min. Easy to raise and lower. The adjustments on the legs are very easy to operate. I would definitely recommend. Thanks etrailer!

Amazing set of steps install was a breeze. Another quick and professional transaction with Etrailer

by:

I think the steps are well made and the product is great. The box came incredibly damaged and broken open (shippers fault here). Luckily there was no damage to the steps so I accepted delivery. The instructions call for #10, 1-1/2 inch screws (INCLUDED). Only screws in the package were 1 inch screws. Additionally the instructions called for me to cut the trim at 22-1/8 inches from the floor. I did this and installed the steps, but the depth of the wall to the front of the step's vertical flange was deeper than the shims that were sent to fill this gap. I would have been better off keeping the trim in place and placing the smallest of the shims included between the step flange and the door trim. Either way though the included screws were too short to reach the wall so I have to go purchase longer screws and either order more shims to fill this extra gap or put my cut trim back in place to help fill the gap which looks like crap now that its been cut out. The only reason I'm dropping the rating to average is because of the trim and shim issue and the screws being too short. Otherwise I really like the steps and when they are down it doesn't bounce the trailer when going in and out.

by:

Upgraded version from what I originally had on my camper. The retractable feet are very welcomed upgrade!

by:

The steps are an excellent upgrade. When installed they could be lifted up and down by a child. I had a problem with the install. The problem was with the plate opposite the plate with the cylinders. The bottom hole in the plate was drilled so low that it was below the hinge level. The video that shows the install on YouTube by the MORryde tech shows him installing the bottom screw just above the hinge. The hole on the plate that I have is lower than the one in the video. I could not get that screw installed. I had to drill a new hole above the hole that could not be accessed and install the screw there. Where the hole is that I drilled is similar to the location that is shown on the installation video by MORride.

by:

I received steps one week earlier than invoice said so was happy to get it installed sooner.
The installation was extremely simple, as it I exchanging it for a damaged one caused by a act of stupid.
I also find your prices reasonable. Thanks etrailer.

by:

We really like it.

by:

A review one year after. New steps replaced very easy. I am much more careful about hitting the auto level and retract now. New steps are working great.

by:

Great product, simple installation. A well thought out design.
