Video Transcript for Lippert SolidStep Locking RV Storage Box Review and Installation

Jake: Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to show you how to install this storage box by SolidStep. It's going to install where your factory steps from your RV used to be before you got your SolidStep. With this box you're going to be able to lock it up, so it's going to keep any of the contents on the inside safe from anybody else. With a simple push of a button, you can see it's going to be spring loaded latch, so that you can open it up and load any type of wheel chocks or if you have any other gear to help you get your landing gear in place, this will be a great location for it, because you'll know it'll always be in this compartment. And then to close it up, simply push it close and set the latch. The storage box is going to have a heavy steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish to be able to resist rust and corrosion.

And one thing I like is it's extremely easy to use. As long as it's unlocked, you push that button, the latch pops out and you can load anything in it. Now this box is going to have a hundred pound weight capacity, so you can see as much space as we have, you're going to be able to load it pretty well to the max before you hit that limit. On the inside of our door, you're going to see there is a weatherstripping. That's going to help to resist any water or dirt and debris from getting inside our box.The box dimensions are going to be 27-1/4" long and 11-5/16" wide. Here's a quick demonstration on how they're designed to work with your SolidSteps.

It is going to be a flush mount design, so it's going to sit back where your old steps used to be. So when you open up your SolidSteps, simply pull down your steps, set them in place, and it's not going to interfere and it's going to be hidden back behind your steps. Then to replace your steps, you just simply lift them back up into place, load up your box and you're ready to hit the road. Now that we've gone over some of those cool features, let's go ahead and show you how easy it is to get installed. To start our install, we're going to need to get our bracket in place. Now in order to install this toolbox in the side of your camper, you're going to have to remove your factory steps.

So if you don't have a set of SolidSteps or if you do and you just never took your factory steps out, you're going to need you to remove those. Then you're going to have to figure out via your specific set of steps, the opening may be different from ours here, but we went from the bottom of our I beam one inch up to make sure that our storage compartment is level. Now we're going to take our plate, line it up with our holes. We put some markings where our holes are so that all we have to do is just line the holes up. Now we'll take our self tapping screw that's included in your hardware and lag it to the frame. Now we'll do the same for the other six holes.

On the back of your box, you're going to have these two tabs which are going to hook into the bracket and hold on so that you can get your four screws in the back of your box. These are the two slots in which those tabs are gonna hook into. So now we can go ahead and set our box in place. Now since the box does have a significant weight to itself, it's a lot easier if you sit around in a little chair and lift it in place. And what you can do is you can push on this button opening your latch and let your door down. Now you're going to locate the four holes to insert your bolts. You'll see here our bolt holes are not lined up exactly. So we'll have to scoot our box over till they are. And we can take our included hardware with our locking washer and thread it on.With your four screws safely securing your box to the inside, you're ready to load it up with some tools or accessories, close it up, latch it, and hit the road.Well guys, with all that being said, that's going to do it for our look and installation of the SolidStep RV Locking Storage Box.

I had installed the solid step stairs and the old fold out steps where still in place. Extra weight that was not needed. I purchased this and installed it easily myself. It was a clean fit and is used to store my road service gear (bottle jacks, lug wrenches and leveling blocks) to change tires. Definitely worth the purchase.

Fitment and workmanship is first class. Perfect companion to fill the space when we replaced factory steps with Lippert SolidStep on our 2013 Surveyor fifth wheels. Fits perfect, easy install, looks factory...I Like It !

by:

The Storage boz is excellent, however it was difficult to install after removing the stairs. It turns out the frame on my trailer must be smaller than the design standard for developing this Storage Box. It is installed by slipping two tabs over a support frame. In order to fit on my trailer it was necessary to trim about 1/4" off the length of the tabs. Once I figured that out it became an easy installation. It is a good product.

by:

A bit of an odd size couldn’t fit the wheel chocks I had intended it for, so I cut blocks to fit the box. Freed up space in pickup bed for more campfire wood. Excellent use of the space freed up installing the solid step. The box it came in was almost unrecognizable, surprised they could read the label to deliver it. Box came out almost pristine, a few scuff marks.

by:

This is a good design & filled in the gap where the old camper steps used to be. It holds a lot of tools in an easily reachable spot.

by:

Great addition to the solid steps. It fills in the whole and gives added storage .

by:

This set of fold down steps are quality made! I love em! Easy to install, easy to use and fold away.

by:

Great add on worth the money. I keep my drill and wheel leveler in here and a bag full of tools. No more wasted space. Getting ready to buy another stair and storage box for the rear door. Great use of space idea.

by:

Etrailer is was very prompt in getting it to me. The box is solid. I can see why its rated up to 100 lbs

by:

That storage box fits great and that tank cover looks great

by:

Thanks for checking. The items arrived today and I am having them installed tomorrow (Thursday.) Two of the boxes were damaged and had been resealed. A package of nut, bolts and screws were laying out on the driveway. I took photos in case the steps and lift were damaged. We'll find out tomorrow. Let's hope not. I'll tell you this I am very impressed with etrailor.com and your personnel follow up with my order. Even if there is some damage or missing parts I know it wasn't your fault. I will be looking to etrailer.com for any future needs. I'll take photos after installation.
Thanks again,
Charlie

Works great. Had to install lower due to the stair light but it works great. Best upgrade we’ve done.

by:

Installation was easy And it fit well into the spot where it was supposed to, It also looks good with the trailer. It's a nice tool kit compartment.

by:

I like the tool box but it was little harder to install on my 5th wheel 2011 29SilverBack.I have not used it because of wife still sick,One thing I do not like is the lock is keyed with all the other toolboxes,I would like to change it.

by:

I am very happy with the quality of this item. The problem that I have is that there were absolutely no installation instructions included in the box. A quick YouTube search found several installation videos for an “ideal” installation circumstance. Unfortunately my Flagstaff 27VRL trailer is not that. For instance… it does not have an I-Beam suspension member on which to fully mount the bracket. Instead I was only able to attach the top of the bracket using the hardware provided. In addition… within the space where the old steps used to fold into is the manual slide out crank attachment. Fortunately I had some spare flat steel straps (3” w x 7” l x 3/16” thick) with which I was able to fashion side braces. It would be nice if Lippert had some resource for advice for unconventional situations. Once installed the box is very sturdy and will hold my power cords and Power EMS.

by:

product looks well made but slight dents and bent from shipping

by:

Fit Perfect

by:

Install was straight forward. I had a light for the pull out steps that this box replaced. I should have looked into moving it. As it is the light is blocked by the box. So far after one year the box is holding up well. The price is outrageous as with all RV accessories. Hence the 4 star review. My toy-hauler is lacking on storage space so this was a welcome addition. I store my x-chocks, gloves, and hitch for the bumper pull.

by:

Unit was not adequately packaged and arrived at my house with the box looking like a bomb exploded in it. The mounting bracket was loose inside the unit with no protection and severely damaged the inside surface finish. Outside surface finish was also damaged due to the lack of packaging. This is the second Lippert product I have ordered that was not packaged adequately for something of its size and weight and both arrived damaged.

After installing Solid Steps on our trailer, I decided to use the extra space for some tools. I installed this where the old steps were. Don't expect to receive any instructions with this product as there are none. I was able to figure out the installation pretty quickly by marking the center of the opening and the center of the mount for the box. On my rig, I had some bolts coming through the frame so I drilled an extra hole in the mount and used the bolt in the frame as part of what held the mount on. The mount is made so you can't install it too high as the box hangs on a set of ears when it's installed. You do have 4 screws inside the box to secure it to the mount so it's pretty solid. I elected to paint the box so it matches the apron of our rig and it looks better than flat black. The box is very useful and well made. I do think it's a little expensive for what you get though, hence only 4 stars.

by:

Great steps. Very easy to install.

by:

Removing the old steps and installing this and the fold out steps was the best upgrade yet

by:

Great look and fir

Received this box with slight damage to the packaging and small dent in box. etrailer is not the issue, rather the delivery folks. It appears as though the delivery people “throw” the packages. etrailer may want to re-enforce or try to isolate the package from careless delivery companies.

These are pretty solid boxes. The opening has a gasket that might make you think it is waterproof, but all of the corners are unsealed, you can see daylight through them. I put mine in non-standard locations, so installation took more time. I bought 2 boxes and 3 0f the 4 hanging clips needed to be pryed outward a little to get the boxes hung. Do yourself a favor and test before trying to mount it up. The boxes are heavyish. One box was a bit out of square, but close enough for me. Was probably set down too hard on one corner. Likely a shipping issue. I'm pretty happy with these. Standard rv key ch751.....

The SolidStep Locking RV Storage Box part # LC664640 is designed to fill the void left over from the old manual pull-down steps when using the fold-up Lippert SolidSteps. The box itself measures 27-1/4" long x 11-5/16" wide which will fit most existing cutouts nicely. I took a look at some of our neighbor's installs and the box does not protrude from the trailer sides in any of these applications, it sits flush or slightly behind on most trailers.
