Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measuring your RV entry height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 25" and 29".

If you find that you have a larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measuring your RV doorway width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 23-3/4" wide and 26-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measuring your RV threshold height

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

Measuring your RV threshold gap

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

Ordered MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for my Rpod 196. They fit perfectly! I had to make one small adjustment since on the 196 the door does not open completely due to the tire fender. For this install, the stairs are not exactly centered in the doorway, This is NOT a problem. a little adjusting of the doorway latches and it works perfectly. This is a HUGE improvement over the stock steps and we are thrilled with the sturdy steps and the additional width and depth they offer. Another thing to consider, installation is EASY! Anyone could put one of these on their RV. The hardest part of the entire job was lugging the awkward box to the trailer.

I have ordered from etrailer in the past and, as always, service and communication is superb.

Great steps! We have traveled extensively in the last year and these steps have been great. The only suggestion I would make and this is NOT a criticism is be sure to give the sliding feet mechanism a squirt of lube occasionally. I’m glad I bought these.

Nice and solid! I did have to remove my original steps as the new ones his and would not mount correctly. No big deal! I love them!

Had the stairs for a year now. They are so solid! I will never have a trailer without them again!

by:

Installation was easy and quick with good instructions. Ingress and egress are easier and safer than with the pullout step that came with trailer. I really like the adjustable legs that support it solidly on the ground when it is deployed. The pullout step is still on the trailer, it is not in the way and didn't have to be removed. The MORyde unit does not interfere with the trailer door or screen door opening or closing. It made it safer when carrying objects in and out of our trailer. Highly recommended by us.

by:

STAIRS FIT WELL AND WERE EASY TO INSTALL. MAKES GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE TRAILER MUCH EASIER. STAIRS LOCK INTO PLACE WHEN NOT IN USE. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT!

by:

These steps are much better than the original pull out steps. More stable to step on and easy to install

by:

I have not installed this yet, but I have no doubt that it will install easily. I have purchased other products from etrailer and found them of high quality and they install very easily if you follow their instruction videos. the videos are very informative and simple to do.

Extremely well!

I left the “StepAbove” step for our Rockwood GeoPro trailer in the down position when parking it behind our house. Bad idea.
When plowing a heavy snow fall, I caught the plow blade on the step and destroyed it.
Alex at etrailer was very helpful determining the correct model to order.
The new step arrived in a few days by UPS.
It only took 10 minutes to install the replacement “StepAbove” steps. Bravo! Thanks Alex and etrailer!!

by:

Just what this trailer needed, huge improvement over original single step. Very easy installation.

by:

Love the stairs! So much better and stable than the fold out ones that were original to the trailer. I took those out on a big rock in a really narrow tree lined campground. Best thing that ever happened! In a reasonably handy woman in her 50's and I installed them myself in under an hour. Great customer service.

We sold that camper in the spring, but the steps were great and the new owners were quite pleased with the upgrade!

by:

Overall the product is great. There is one flaw that I will have to resolve manually. The safety latch to prevent the steps from deploying is too short for the door frame on my camper(Black Series), therefore there is no safety.
Install was easy and the product is good and solid.

After a year they are still great. no issues, nothing broken.

by:

We mounted this on a 39-foot motorhome to provide for a safer climb into and out of the coach. It took some retrofitting to make it work as desired but it was probably not designed for a motorhome application. Of course, it is more trouble than the electric step but provides more stability and a larger step surface when exiting and entering the coach. The most annoying issue is the noise it makes going down the road. We put a blanket on it to quieten it down. lol

by:

Steps are easy to install, and afford easy entry to my RV. However I did have to cut the entry door and the screen door down so the doors would clear the threshold of the steps. Not a problem if you have the proper tools to do it with. It is a 100% improvement over the factory steps on the unit.

by:

Having a full knee replacement and climbing the OER fold out steps was tricky. I had fears of slipping off and falling from the step and further complicating my knee. After installing the MORyde RV Steps I have full confidence on entering and exiting the RV. The flat sturdy step surface is a blessing. I recommend anyone especially those with limited mobility to switch. Be sure to correct size needed for you particular RV door width and height. MORyde will help with that information. Note: You can leave the old steps tucked in place.

by:

Installation was easy and quick, instructions were clear. My travel trailer has a gas strut on the door that was mounted to the threshold, it no longer fits so I'm not quite sure what to do with that, probably need to just remove it. I previously had the solid step on my last trailer. I like the foot adjustment on this one as it's an easier design to work with. I liked the latch mechanism on the other one better. This does not latch smoothly and it doesn't make the same clicking sound that lets you know it's engaged and stored in the upright position. Will adjust and see if I can get that to work better. Overall significant upgrade over the factory installed steps.

by:

I appreciate the assistance from Christian in ordering the correct MorRryde Step Above Rv steps. We placed the order on a Monday and received it four days later! I installed the steps the same afternoon in about an hour. The MorRryde steps make entering and exiting our trailer much safer. Very pleased with the service and the product!

by:

We absolutely love this upgrade! Rock solid, and easy to install. Hands down the best upgrade we have done to our travel trailer.

by:

Needed to replace my steps because I stupidly left them down when driving away from a rainy potty stop. The replacement steps fit exactly! Took me about 30 minutes to remove the old damaged steps & install the new ones. I’m a 70+ old lady. Thank you Alex for helping me order the correct replacement steps! Very pleased with this easy fix!

by:

Placed my order and it arrived in great shape. I opened the box to find everything needed to install. It was a match to the old one so I just slipped the quick release pins in place and made minor adjustments to the stops and it works just as it should.

by:

Easy to install, very sturdy and really like the adjustable legs

by:

It was easy to install and is easy to stow and deploy. My wife says it’s the best upgrade we have made to our travel trailer.

by:

The steps were delivered quickly. My husband installed them within an hour of receiving them. Installation was quick and easy. The steps are very sturdy and fit perfectly.

by:

well the step are great but I had to redo my threshold and door frame works great now but a lot more work than was told on installation papers and video

by:

I loved it but sold this trailer. I am checking if the step will fit new trailer because the door on the new one doesn't open all the way because of the awning

by:

Works great definitely worth the money! !!

by:

There were a lot of choices to consider. Install was a breeze. Fit perfectly on the existing mounts from the previous steps.

Thank you.

  • Can MORryde StepAbove be Used on RV Door that Has Strut on Threshold
If you have a strut that attaches to the bottom of your RV door you'd have a hard time fitting a MORryde StepAbove part # MR26RR with it as it would interfere when trying to fold the step up. So what you'd most likely need to do is remove the strut to use the step but there is chance it could fit just depending on the setup. Worst case scenario you could install a strut setup on the top of the door instead.

I can help you out. Since these both fall in to your range at 29-30 inches. You need to ask yourself how wide is my door and how many steps do I want? As long as your doorway is(from inside flange to inside flange): 23-3/4" - 26-1/4" wide, either of these will fit. I personally would pick the 3 step version because it will give you more space if you park somewhere with a larger drop down or uneven surface and its drop rise is 8 inches, the two step version has a drop rise of 9 inches.
