Will Lippert Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The pull-out steps from Lippert are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Lippert Manual Mounting

The Lippert pull-out steps attach the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 25-1/2" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 25-1/2" wide to 28" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

RV Steps Outriggers

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Lippert Manual Entry Height

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 6" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom step to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurements in the first column. If you determined you need a 25-1/2" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 25-3/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. The steps for 27-1/2" mounting bracket widths are in the fourth column, and the steps for 28" mounting bracket widths are in the fifth column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware to 20 ft-lbs

Delivered on time. Had to adjust the back brackets because the holes did not match. Overall it looks like a quality product and is now on the trailer.

Still working great. I took a corner to close and bent them a little, but they still work fine.

The new set of dual steps looks great-- i was re-fitting my single step on a Salem Forest 2002- with a new set of steps-- It is your product on the trailer form the factory marginally. The bolt patters is a bit different so I will have to drill the attachment plate to the new holes in the new set of steps. It woudl be nice to include cut out drilling pattern to go along with a the steps. Otherwise very happy with this set of steps an the retrofitting.

The steps are working out just fine. Happy with their use. The installation and product did not come with instructions. a Re drill pattern woudl have been nice. I had to hold it up and mark the one drill hole and then go to Lowes and get new stainless carriage insulated bolts. overall the lower step seems a bit weak- Im considering purchasing accompanying hinged supports that fold down when the steps are down for added support. If i woudl suggest a change in production make the lower step thinker metal- so it doesnt feel so flimsy.

A little more work than I expected to install, but if you need an extra step, it’s worth it. Nice and sturdy product. A few light scuffs right out of the box, but the paint does seem thick and durable.

Went from a single 16” step up to an easier 9” then only 5” after. Really needed it for my wife after her recent back surgery, and it should be easier for my son once he starts walking.

The extra work had me drill the “outriggers” because this set was 1/2” wider than my factory set. I’d have to guess my factory set is some nonstandard brand. Trailer is a 15’ Forest River Wolfpup 16BHS.

Love this pull out step! Replaced our bulky steps that fold up inside the trailer (and track dirt and get in the way) with this handy little step. It's super-sturdy and easy to collapse and pull back out. Had them on for a year now and no rust or corrosion even though camper is parked outside.

by:

Original step to 2016 23RB Jayco Jayflight broke. Bought this step to replace. Installation was perfect with no issues. Took about 10 minutes. All mounting holes of the new step aligned to original trailer brackets with no issues. Even was able to use the original hardware. This newer step is definitely better built than the original. Looks good!

by:

These steps are a perfect replacement for the original steel steps on our2006 Safari Airstream trailer. They bolt in without modification to the steps or the trailer.

by:

Fits perfectly on our Lance 1685 travel trailer after removing the damaged steps. Removing the damaged steps was 95% of the work since cutting huck bolts with a hack saw in a cramped space is a PITB. The original steps were damaged and bent after we snagged them several times dragging our trailer over rough terrain (they were folded up, but still hang too low).

by:

Replaced the steps on my 2015 20 ‘FB flying cloud airstream. EXACT fit ! Fast shipping. Great communication

by:

These steps were very simple to install. They are good quality, feel and look sturdy. These replaced steps that were broken on one side. Good deal for the price. Their customers ordering and service was great.

They still continue to work well for me.

by:

Great product, less than an hour to install both front and rear doors.

by:

It was easy to find exactly what I needed on eTrailer.com. As usual, the price was as good or better than anywhere else. The stairs arrived on time and they fit my Kodiak 186E perfectly, using the same bolt holes as the old stairs. Easy to install if you have a floor jack or jack stands to hold them in place while you put the carriage bolts in. Simpler design than the old stairs. I like the grab handles underneath.

by:

I have a 2017 RPod 180 and needed to change the one step to two steps after my wife’s knee replacement this past month. This part seemed to match closer to the current 25 7/8” width of the existing step. These steps are 25 1/2” so needed a few washers to space out. I replaced the 3/8” carriage bolt from 1” long to 1 1/2” long on one side. Reused the original on the other side. To fit this in the space I had to notch the steps at the back to fit around the frame beam. No impact on function. The steps were not fitting up to the current intended notch so I added another notch to lock them in the new position. I set the steps all the way up against the frame. This minimized the reduction in ground clearance as well as reducing the top step rise. It did require drilling new holes in the original supports. Ground clearance is ~9”. Was 10”.

by:

Well made, simple install, although a floor jack is recommended to install.

by:

Great no rust steps are looking as new as when delivered

by:

We had difficulty installing all four bolts necessary on the steps. By standing on our heads and working upside down, we were finally able to get them in place. We used a bottle, jack and a piece of wood to help hold the steps in place while we positioned the bolts correctly before tightening.

by:

Super fast shipping, very easy to find what I needed, my husband (not super handy) put it on with minimal swearing. It would have cost us 4 times as much to take it somewhere and have the stair repaired. Will certainly use etrailer again. Stair was damaged when we drove into a puddle hiding a HUGE pothole. Thanks for the outstanding product/service.

by:

I needed different set of steps.Easter to get into my camper.the steps work good as we speek.so for so good.

by:

Bought these for my 2015 Forest River travel trailer. Excellent ship time, received in a few days. They were a little snug when installing but after the installation was complete were perfect. They seem very sturdy and well made.

by:

Just what I needed. I needed to shim both sides but it wasn’t an issue. Thanks!

by:

This item is being installed in a unique type of configuration and photos will be comming later as the camper and truck are out for paint. I think it wll be a first time istallation.

  • Recommendation for 2 or 3 Step Assembly with 25-1/4 Inch Wide Mounting Base
I went out to the warehouse to take a look at the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps # SMFP-2100 referenced in your question. I actually found that the mounting base on this unit measures 27-5/8 inches wide, so it will be too large to fit between the welded on brackets you mentioned having on your trailer. I instead recommend looking at the Lippert Manual Pull-Out Step # LC432682. This two step assembly does indeed have a mounting base of 25-1/4 inches wide and 8-3/4 inches deep. It features...

  • RV Step Recommendation for Cargo Trailer
Thanks for reaching out! We'll want to make sure these don't sit too low but something like the Lippert Manual Pull-Out Step for RVs # LC432682 might work really well for your application. These have a max 7" drop/drop between the steps and mounting points and you can bolt the steps to your trailer once you've installed the Mounting Brackets # LC301704. From the photos I've seen of your 2015 FR Shasta Flyte 215CK, it looks like you need a 2-step unit. To identify the correct replacement, you'll want to determine the width of the mounting base of your existing steps. If that base is about 27-1/2 inches, the Flexco # SMFP-2100 would be a good choice. If the base is around 25-1/2 inches in width, go with the Lippert # LC432682 or for a 23-5/8 inch mounting base width, use the Flexco # SMFP-2120. The CR Brophy # AS23 steps you referenced...
