Today we're going to be taking a look at part number UF48-979018. This is the Ultra-Fab Hitch Mounted Steel Rollers for RVs with 3 inch hitch tubing. The unique rollers are going to clamp around the cross bar of your RV's rear hitch, and that's going to help prevent tail dragging and digging in while the RV is backing up. All the mounted hardware is included. Everything you need is included. It's going to feature a heavy duty steel construction.
It looks like it's got a nice protective finish on it, so it's not going to rust or corrode on you but, again, very strong, very durable. One of the neat things I want to point out is here on the inside of the rollers, we're going to have some bearings. Just like with anything else, bearings need to be lubricated for proper operation. What Ultra-Fab does is they put a grease fitting here in the bolt head. That way you can attach a grease gun to it, and simply just pump in your grease, and it's going to lubricate the bearings so really nice design, easy maintenance with these. It's designed for 3 inch by 3 inch square hitch tubing.
The roller diameter is going to give us a measurement of about 3 inches. If we take a measurement of the roller width, that's going to give us a measurement of 2-1/4 of an inch. With this part number, you're going to get 2 full assemblies. The u-bolts simply go around the tubing on your hitch then on the bottom of the hitch, so these would go around your tubing. Then in between the tubing and the roller assembly would be this bracket right here, this mounting plate. The mounting plate is going to sit directly on top of this bracket and on top of the roller assembly.
Then these are going to come around the tubing, drop through there, and then on the bottom side, you would install the lock nuts that are provided. If we take a measurement of the plate, measuring this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of 4-3/4 of an inch. Measuring this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 5-1/2 inches. The thickness of the steel plate is going to be a 1/4 inch. If I put that plate back on top of the roller assembly because that's how it's going to be installed, if we take an overall height measuring from the bottom of the roller to the top of this plate, that's going to give us a measurement of about 3-3/8 to 3-1/2 inches, so right in that range. That's about how far it's going to be hanging from the bottom of the tube of our hitch.
Again, it's designed for 3 inch by 3 inch tubing. That's going to do it for our review of part number UF48-979018. .

The product itself is great. I haven't had the opertunity to test them yet. The only complaint I have is etrailer shipped it to me in the original box. The box was destroyed. Parts were hanging out, fortunately no parts are missing. These are very heavy and with sharp edges. May want to think about double packing. Other than that, all is good.

Seem like very good quality. Still have the factory guards on the hitch but wheels will hopefully take over when they fail. The right side of factory guards mostly worn through already I assume from the trip out from the manufacturer in Indiana to so cal.

Great wheels for potential drag, look very durable and heavy duty. Only issue is that their largest bracket package did not fit my rig, 3 inch, so I had to weld them onto the RV.
But that works, just more work.

These skid wheels are designed to work with up to 3 wide tubing. If your tubing is a little bigger then using a weld on application like the part UF48-979021 would be the better route to go.

The rollers arrived in perfect shape and promptly. I was very pleased that the U-bolts were sufficiently long to allow me to incorporate a 1/2 inch thick shim or more to get the rollers lower on structure that is 3 inches by 21/2 inches. They take the load imposed when entering/exiting my steep driveway from the street which was were wearing away the fixed skids that were dragging on the pavement.

Easy bolt on application for my 35' 95 Holiday Rambler. Also had rear springs rebuilt and raised nominally to correct this notorious tail dragger model. Still drags occaisonnaly but these allow me to ride through. Built tough and well.

Works as advertised. A rubber or plastic facing of the rollers would help with the scraping of the driveway and street (weight of the RV is sufficient to mark the asphalt street and the gravel texture of the driveway).

Rollers install in less than 10 minutes. They work great and do not mark my driveway like my previous set. Low profile so they don't hang down. Built really sturdy and should last the life of my trailer. Grease fitting is conveniently located on the end of the roller axle.

Arrived and one was installed today. I adapted it to a use that is different than the product was intended for. I put it on my utility trailer just behind the ball coupler. It should help with it dragging entering and leaving parking lots.

The product is very heavy and beat up the cardboard box. In the first shipment two of the three items were "lost" with the box being taped up and delivered incomplete. Reshipment was quick but time was lost due to poor packaging. The rollers are well made - just a shipping issue.

Spacer could have been a little thicker, or if there were someway to adjust the distance so the wheels could be closer to the ground, but other than that, it worked as designed.

A better solution would be to have the city put down some extra blacktop to smooth out your driveway entrance.

These are supplied with straight carriage bolts, not u-bolts, for installation. U-bolts might distort the bracket that is attached to the caster. My contact at Ultra-Fab said that for this item you can use Grade 5 (USA) or Grade 8 (China) hardware of the appropriate length for your application, but not u-bolts. Other Ultra-Fab skid wheels, such as their # UF48-979018 do use u-bolts for installation.
