Protect your investment

If you aren't using a surge protector, you're taking a big risk. While spikes caused by lightning can damage your electrical system and appliances, there are common electrical issues that can be just as dangerous. Choosing a surge protector with advanced features will help you protect your RV.

Beyond Basic Surge Protection

The most affordable RV surge protectors will provide basic protection from voltage spikes caused by lightning or other transmission issues. They can typically withstand a few minor spikes, or only one major spike, before they need to be completely replaced.

Power Watchdog surge protectors go beyond the basics. Plug it in before connecting your RV to get a clear indication of any wiring issues at your park pedestal. In the event of a major spike, you can replace the surge protection module itself rather than the entire unit. The modules are plugged in without soldering, so you don't need to be an expert electrician to make an easy repair. In fact, the only tool you need is a screwdriver.

Information at Hand

The Power WatchDog smartphone app

The Power Watchdog app lets you connect to your surge protector via Bluetooth. You can monitor your energy usage, making it easy to diagnose any ongoing energy issues you may be experiencing. When voltage increases or decreases to risky levels, you will be notified right away. You can also reset your surge protector without stepping outside.

This has really helped me manage my energy using the Bluetooth data to the app, especially when we plug in to 15 amp driveway power. The indicator lights on the unit give me instant test of campground wiring before I plug in the coach. And it has a replaceable surge protection module.

by:

We have a horrible electric setup at our campground . Power surges spikes etc. Blew our inverters well. Bought this to help stop damage in the future . So far it's worked. Had 2 more surges since I installed it. Saved me time money and aggravation. Well worth the money

@Tom Awesome, we're glad to hear that!

by:

I was debating with myself about portable versus an installed unit on the Rv and decided to go portable. I like how I can get to a campground and immediately know if the power is good before hooking up the Rv. I could do this with the installed unit but the portable unit seems more adept at this. Also like having surge protector with all the lightning storms going thru FL recently.

by:

I purchased this Surge Protector about a year ago and it has provided excellent service each and every time. It is built very sturdy and provides needed piece of mind that your RV won't suffer a catastrophic electrical event in the form of a power surge, while also informing you if your electric supply is up to par.

by:

We bought the Watchdog Surge Protector one year ago before our cross country RV trip and have been very happy with it. We stayed in some interesting member sites and campgrounds and had the peace of mind that we were protected. I've ordered a number of product through etrailer.com and find they are excellent to work with.

by:

I am very happy with this purchase. Being able to view the draw the RV is using is very helpful and informative to understand how much you can run without overloading the circuit. Highly recommend!

by:

The 50 amp Watchdog is a solid piece of equipment. I especially like that I can monitor the RV power system on the fly, from my phone, using the app. Thank you etrailer.

by:

Works great haven’t had a problem yet and so far it’s keeping me rv safe from power outages and surges!

by:

Nice unit that will do the job correctl y..

by:

The good news is we haven't had an incident to put the unit to the test. Even so, it's peace of mind having it in use, and being able to monitor usage makes hooking our 50 amp R to a 30 amp service easy without popping breakers.

by:

Shipping very fast. Watchdog easy to set up. Like that I can replace the surge module without sending in. So far very happy.

A year later still going strong. Unit stays plugged in at my house and when we’re on the road. So all year long. Haven’t had a bit of trouble with it.

by:

Absolutly no problems with this surge protector.watchdog has been faithfully on duty day and night

by:

Well made product to protect my RV's electrical system.

by:

I've felt better plugging in our camper knowing that the service is correct. I plug in the unit before I connect the camper to make sure all is good.

by:

It has been working great! It gives us peace of mind that we are protecting the electrical system on our RV.

by:

About a year ago you purchased a Hughes Autoformers Power Watchdog Surge RV Surge Protector. I purchased this a year ago and have used it many times with no problems. My brothers recommend I get this and the water regulator to protect my new travel trailer.

by:

It works like a charm. I feel confident that the power that my rig receives is of pop quality.

by:

I really like etrailer to order from, They get things out A.S.A.P and delivery is right on time. I have ordered several things from them and never had to call them about my order's. Keep up the good job!

by:

Fast shipping and excellent product. Was easy to setup. Would highly recommend trailer for their awesome products.

by:

I bought in several things from the trailer and they’re always prompt

by:

Hopefully it will do its job like it’s supposed to do. E trailer shipping is great

by:

Appears well built and am looking forward to giving it a try next trip. Still haven't figured out what the metal ring on the male end is for

Works great...identified a missing phase on a 50 amp circuit in an RV park

by:

So far, no issues and it appears to work as it should. Etrailer's response and delivery was second to none.

by:

I won't be using it for quite some time , my primary reason for purchasing it was for the price as well as the reviews when comparing to more expensive units.

by:

I frequently order from eTrailer because I have been pleased with their service. Their prices are much lower than that big chain store that sells RV stuff, you know the one...

  • Why Would Two Fireplaces Suddenly Stop Working In An RV
Hi Jeremy, It sounds to me like there was a power surge that ran through your trailer and at minimum the fireplaces took too much voltage and blew. You can try disconnecting them from power for 15 minutes and then retesting them but it sounds like you most likely had them disconnected for a longer period of time. I'd be willing to bet other sensitive electronics (stereo, tv, etc.) could also potentially be damaged. If they don't come back on then you're unfortunately looking a complete...

The acceptable power range for the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth - Portable - 50 Amp # HU47FR is between 104 volts - 132 volts, just like with the 30 amp # HU97FR. I recommend placing the low end at 109v and the high end 127v so that you have a 5v buffer to notify you before it gets out of the safe zone.

  • Can the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth Be Used With a Generator
Yes, the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth, # HU47FR, for 50 amp and the 30 Amp version, # HU97FR can be used with a generator. However, many generators (portable) have a floating ground/neutral. If you do have a floating neutral generator then you will also need the Hughes Autoformers Ground Neutral Bonded Plug for Generators, # HU33FR to bond the neutral and ground thus preventing an open ground or open neutral error fault to occur.
