Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're going to be installing Hopkins 7-way and 4-way trailer connectors, part number 30955. This 7-pole connector's going to plug directly into your factory wiring harness, providing you with all the necessary trailer signals from both a 4-pole flat connector and a 7-pole connector. Both connectors are going to provide you with the necessary lighting signals, such as your left turn, right turn, brake lamp and stop lamp signals. Your 7-pole's going to have some additional wiring in it for a brake controller signal, auxiliary power and backup lamps. The 7-pole connector has a spring-loaded door with a seal located on the inside to keep out moisture and corrosion. The 4-pole connector has a dust cap that can be removed and reinstalled to help keep out dirt, debris and moisture. This is ideal if you have multiple different trailers.

If you have a small trailer for hauling things around that just needs lighting, you've got your 4-pole. Let's say you've got a boat trailer to haul a big boat that uses a brake controller. You've got your 7-pole here for that. Whatever situation, you're ready to go.We'll begin our installation by installing our 7-pole bracket onto our hitch. If your hitch doesn't have a built-in bracket, you may need to purchase a short or long bracket.

You can find one of those here at etrailer.com. Start by preparing your screw. You'll place on a lock washer, followed by a flat washer, then we'll slide those down through the openings in our bracket. We'll then slide our 7-pole bracket up onto it, and thread the nut on the other side. Then tighten those down with a 10 millimeter socket and Phillips head screwdriver.

Next spot your 7-pole connector by sliding the harness through the small slit at the bottom of the bracket and sliding the longer flathead screws through each of the openings in the face. Then on the backside, thread on your locking nuts. And repeat that for the three remaining screws. Then tighten them down with a flat-bladed screwdriver and a 10 millimeter wrench. Now underneath the vehicle at the rear bumper on the driver's side, you'll find your factory tow connector. Inside there's a dummy plug we'll have to remove.

So you'll push down on the release tab here, and pull out on the dummy plug. Then you can just set this aside. We'll then add some dielectric grease to the terminals inside of our 7-pole. This'll help keep out any moisture and corrosion. Then we can just plug it in. Make sure the connector's fully seated, you should hear it and feel it click into place. Now you want to plug it into your trailer or use a tester, such as the one that we use here at etrailer, part number I26 to make sure everything's working properly. If you don't have any signals out of your tester or your trailer, you may need to go to the dealer and get the computer flash to make it operative. That completes our installation of Hopkins 7-way and 4-way trailer connectors on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Replacement Custom Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors - 30955

Average Customer Rating:  4.7 out of 5 stars   (362 Customer Reviews)

etrailer had what we needed. At times it is not easy locating accessory parts on vehicles not factory installed. Easy to navigate site to find and compare the exact parts we were looking for.

by:

Looks like a good quality plug, the only thing I can knock it for is there’s no bracket for securing it to the round tube on the receiver.

by:
2014 JeepGrand Cherokee

Product was exactly what I was looking for and thanks to the hitch system previously purchased, it was fabricated for a perfect fit. Also, the first one that came in was busted up a little, etrailer immediately sent a new one out with no hassle. Great company.

by:

Great fit works good has 7way rv plug and the regular flat 4 plug no need for adapters to lose or have stolen.

Been using this plug for a year now still working great

by:

Perfect fit just plug and play good quality hitch.

by:

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver was easy to install and has worked just fine in pulling my several trailers. For the price, an excellent deal. The 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Connector by Hopkins was a disappointment because the cap that doubles as a dust cover and latch to the adapter has come off and missing after a few months. This cap is not replaceable, the whole connector would have to be replaced.

by:
2006 GMC Sierra

Exact fit for my 06 GMC Sierra it took longer to get my spare tire down than to install the tow package. My spare was stuck.

by:

Perfect fit and function as usual from etrailer.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Perfect! I used this on a single cab Chevy Silverado 1500. Plugged into factory trailer lights near spare tire, mounted it up, plugged in trailer and everything worked just like it should. My truck does not have a spare tire so I removed the spare tire keyhole mount and cut some of the bumper to fit the adapter. My truck did not require a ECM/PCM flash of any kind, although I hear some vehicles may have to.

by:

Nice product ,Easy to install and then worked as supposed to . I installed in bumper as opposed to the add on bracket that came with it ,made for a easier way to plug in trailer cord.

by:
2006 Chevrolet Silverado

in my case I have to say that first look at YouTube from there I got the video with the description of the process and the number of the part of there just went to etrailer.com I put the # alone went out it was really easy to send fantastic just wait 4 days in regular shipment for the installed only you see that plug it in thank you I hope that some more will serve..

by:

I installed this today. Took around 90 minutes but part of that was learning how to get the spare out of the way. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the bumper because of where I wanted the connector to be placed. All necessary hardware came with the unit. This was very easy to do after watching etrailer's How To video. Good job guys, great product.

by:

The product was an exact one-for-one replacement. However, I ended up having to replace the female connector due to corrosion. This took a bit of time. The result was all new connections that work fine. Thanks for all your assistance.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

I bought this 7 way trailer connector to replace a broken one on my 2006 Chevy 2500HD. It was an easy install and only took a few minutes to complete. I tested it with my trailer connected and all works fine.
The shipping was super fast.
Thanks , etrailer.

2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Product exactly what I was looking for. Fit factory harness perfectly. Strong and rigid, appropriate mounting hardware. Perfect

by:

Cathy T. was very good help. She set me up with the correct parts for our 2001 Chevy so we can have a 7 prong plug in at the bumper and in the box.
We got rid of the cobbled up mess that started giving us trouble and now everything works great. The plug and play took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete. We will do business again if needed. Thanks again Cathy T. and etrailer!

by:

Works great!!! Thanks....

2007 Chevrolet Silverado

My 2007 Classic Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 did not have a factory hitch receiver, so I selected the 13322 Curt Hitch Receiver because it closely resembles the OEM hitch receiver and attaches to the bottom of the bumper. Installation was easy, as shown in the videos and described by other reviewers. All holes aligned perfectly. I did not remove the spare tire as it is not necessary. I used two jack stands to raise/support the receiver frame in place while I started the first bolts. I had the 22mm and 19mm sockets needed to tighten and torque the bolts/nuts. It looks great and I now am able to tow.

For the wiring I installed the 30955 Hopkins 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors to the bumper adjacent to the license plate. This required drilling a 2-1/8" hole in the bumper, which was time consuming, but it now resembles a factory installation. I was able to remove the license plate and connect to the factory plug.

I ordered these parts from etrailer for a number of reasons: 1) The website is intuitive and contains a tremendous amount of information for the person who is trying to research product information; 2) the selection and inventory is amazing; 3) the prices are very competitive – free shipping for orders over $99; and 4) the dedicated customer service is outstanding – the email communication is prompt. I ordered on a weekend and it was delivered by the following Friday.
A very positive first experience.

by:

Jaime B was very knowledgeable, helpful and nice.

by:

Unit worked well as advertised. Old connecter had to stay (was welded) so I mounted off center a foot away. Now it protrudes 2 inches.

I use it infrequently. When I do use it, it works well. It would not mount as per instruction because of the factory offered trail hitch assy. Looks catiwhompus but does the job.

  • Parts Needed for Installing Voyager Brake Controller 39510 in 2013 Chevrolet Silverado
In your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado you will install the Tekonsha Voyager brake controller # 39510 by hardwiring it to the vehicle wiring already present under the dash. You will use harness # 20127; this does not come with the controller so order it in addition to the Voyager. If at your rear bumper you have a bundle of wires you'll use # PK11898 for a 7-way. If instead you have a round connector with a cap, then use part # 30955, which will plug in to that connector. I have linked both...

There is a way for you to use the Prodigy P2 # 90885 brake controller with your 2005 Chevy Express Van Motor Home, but you will not be able to do so using a wiring adapter such as # 3016, it will need to be hardwired in. You will have the blue output brake wire already ran from the back to the front - it is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. If your van has a round plug with a cap inside the driver's side frame rail instead of a bundle of wires in the jack storage...

Your 2005 Chevrolet Silverado is already wired for a 7-Way connector. There is a wiring harness run near the spare tire that has a connector that can be connected to a 7-Way. The part you are looking for is Hopkins part # 30955. I have linked to this product below. Follow the link and at the bottom of the page you will see the type of connector you are looking for. You will need to wire the adapter to the controller since Dexter does not put a connector on its controller. Thank you for all of the information and pictures! It looks like you should at least have some wiring already run on your 2019 Chevy Express Van 3500 so I'm just as confused as to why you don't have a round plug with a cap inside the driver's side frame rail or blunt cut wiring in the jack storage compartment. Aside from double checking and having someone else check as well (to get a pair of fresh eyes on your vehicle), the only other thing I can really offer is to just run your own wiring...
