When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4042700 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Titan Zinc Plated Bolt-On Drum Break Actuator with the drop for a 2 and 5/16 hitch ball and has a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer breaks with your tow vehicle breaks. Basically the unique roller design reduces resistance during the telescoping to create a straight line movement. If you notice the rollers up here and two down here, they do have the grease zerk fittings on them. This will allow you to lubricate the rollers. This is a sturdy, durable, steel construction. It will resist bending in any jack knife situations.

The coupler at the front here is a standard heavy duty coupler. If you notice, has the drop to it. The lock on it is a finger pull lock, so once you put that onto your hitch ball it will lock it into place. The break away kit, which in the chain hooked to this lever here, this is all included. The break away kit would be used, you hook this hook to your tow vehicle, and then if you ever have a situation where your trailer would come detached from your tow vehicle, it'll pull on that chain, moves that level forward, and locks up the breaks on the trailer to keep it from a run away situation. Now this actuator does have a nice zinc plating to it to provide corrosion resistance.

It is a bolt on installation. If you can see right down here, this has the five holes for bolting on to your trailer. A few specs on this: The application is for hydraulic drum breaks, the ball size again that this fits on is a 2 and 5/16 diameter, the amount of drop is 3 inches, it is designed to mount on a 3 inch wide channel tongue, the weight capacity on this is 20,000 pounds, maximum tongue weight is 2,000 pounds. Now one last note I do want to mention is because this actuator does not have the reverse lock out, which is usually a solenoid that's installed on the back of the master cylinder, this one does not have that, so because of that it's recommended that you equip your trailer with free backing breaks, so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer breaks. That should do it for the review on the Titan Zinc Plated Bolt-On Drum Break Actuator with a drop for a 2 and 5/16 hitch ball with a 20,000 pound weight capacity.

  • Parts to Replace Hydraulic Brake System on a 2004 Magic Tilt Trailer
We can definitely get you started with parts for your Magic Tilt Trailer, but we will need some additional information to complete your parts list. We can start with a coupler. Since your boat trailer will not exceed 10,260 lbs, I recommend looking at a coupler like the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator for Disc Brakes, # T4750620. This coupler has a 3 inch drop like the coupler you referenced, but it has a 12,500 lb weight capacity which is closer to the weight of your trailer. Using...

  • How to Determine if a Trailer Brake Actuator is for Drum or Disc Brakes
If the psi rating is listed on top of the actuator you can tell by that, or it may say drum or disc brakes on it. If the psi rating is there drum brake actuators put out up to 1000 psi. Disc brakes will put out up to 1600 psi. Otherwise they will look identical. The only other way to tell without a part number would be the fitting at the back of the master cylinder. On the inside of the fitting there will be a check valve, a narrower opening, indicating a drum brake actuator. But without...

  • Disc Master Cylinder and Reverse Lock Out Recommendation for Titan Model 20 Actuator
To convert your Model 20 actuator to work with disc brakes only requires the master cylinder to be changed to the part # T4749501042. Then for an electric reverse lock out solenoid all you need is the part # T4748800 and your set.

  • Items Needed to Rebuild Boat Trailer Hydraulic Drum Braking System
It sounds like you have a great winter-season project on your hands! Based on your description of the condition of the existing trailer hydraulic drum braking system it sounds like you'll be replacing just about everything. When in doubt, swap it out. A good starting point for your project is the linked article on hydraulic drum brakes. This article covers the process of installing drum brakes from scratch but it will still give you all of the considerations to keep in mind when re-building...
