Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Ball Mount Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out this CURT ball mount. So it's gonna have a longer shank on it to help you with clearance, whether you have a spare tire or just the front coupler in the front of your trailer, too close to the vehicle. You can get it out there a little bit. Let's check it out. Now, when you get your ball mount, you're gonna just get the ball mount, so the ball's gonna be sold separately, and so is the pin and clip.

So make sure you pick those up on the website, as well. So you're gonna put this in your hitch. It fits two inch by two inch hitches. Then the ball is gonna go here. Now, when you're picking out your ball, make sure you look at your trailer coupler, and see which size ball it needs.

So this is gonna be a two-inch ball today. We'll put this through the hole. It's gonna be about one inch, so we know it's gonna fit in there. We'll put our lock washer and nut on the bottom. Now when you get it, you're gonna want to torque this down.

You can't tow a trailer with it loose there. But for demonstration purposes, I'm just doing a hand thread so I can show you. This is gonna be the drop position. This is a two-inch drop. You can also use it in the rise position, so that means you'll flip the ball mount over.

Now, that's not gonna work in our application today because of the spare tire. It doesn't quite clear that. There are longer ball mounts out there, too, you can look at if that's an issue you have. But as you see, you drop it in this way with the lock nut, and that on the bottom, and this would be the rise position, but not able to use it with the spare tire. In the rise position, it's gonna have three-quarter inch of a rise. So at least there's some kind of option with a ball mount if that's what you need. The ball mounts gonna be made out of a black powder coat steel, so if you're leaving it on the back of your vehicle at all times, the weather's not gonna bother it. It's not gonna rust or corrode on you. Now, it also has a trailer weight rating of 7,500 pounds. It's gonna have a tongue weight rating of 750 pounds. Now make sure you look at the other components in your setup, like the ball or the hitch. If those have lower weight ratings, go by those because you don't want to stress out your setup. That was a quick look at the CURT ball mount with the long shank on it, helping out with the clearance on the spare tire, or just keeping the trailer a little bit further away from the vehicle, as well. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helped.

Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop - 12-5/8" Long - D-26

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (3862 Customer Reviews)

Allows me to open the tailgate on the truck with a trailer hitched up.

by:

Great product for getting out past the tire carrier on a small SUV. Customer service was wonderful with great follow through and any assistance I needed I will definitely use etrailer agin

by:

The one foot ball mount works great on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado work truck(no lift kit). We use it for a one axle, lawn care/utility trailer. It is used at least half the work week and has held up for a year. It may not be a good choice for a heavier trailer, but at that point we would also purchase a 2500 truck too. The mount helps clear the jack when the tailgate is opened with about 2 inches to spare.

by:

Ball mount is the perfect length and well made.

by:

e trailer is my “go to” place for everything i need for towing my trailers
great products - excellent selection - quick delivery and excellent customer service .

by:

Just received today - quality appears excellent, and length is exact

by:

Got the trailer back far enough to open my tailgate and working great!

by:

Recently bought a Kubota RTV x900. The receiver is located under the bed. With the extra long ball hitch drawbar I can easily get to the drawbar and use a clevis to hitch my 5ft. wide mower or attach a ball and use the trailer. The pictures will illustrate the length of the drawbar which makes access very easy. The product is heavy duty and well made. Ordered this product on Thursday morning and it was delivered the next day, Friday afternoon. Customer service was helpful, will use etrailer again. Thanks

by:

The D-26 is just the right length for my 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The 32in spare tire doesn't get in the way of the hitch even with 3/4" rise. yay

by:

The extra length of this ball mount makes backing my boat into the water so much easier than a shorter ball mount. Also makes opening tailgates possible. Perfect product.

by:

Arrived on time and worked well

by:

Excellent quality.By being extra long,it's able to clear the bumper on my land rover which for unknown reasons has the reciever mount way too far under vehicle.

by:

Good quality product that gets hitch ball/trailer coupler a few inches further away from rear bumper of new NISSAN ROGUE.

by:

The extra long ball mount was exactly what I needed for my Jeep. The added length clears my spare tire and gives me the extra turning radius I need for backing my camper into tight spots!

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. Always high quality items and high quality service from etrailer!

by:

Good welds and high quality paint. Looks great!

by:

Perfect! Gave me about 4" extra length so my trailer Jack was away from my trailer.

by:

Great service from etrailer, fast shipping great prices, used the ball mount on my motorhome to extend it past the inset receiver so the tongue of my trailer was farther away from the bumper

by:

This is exactly what we needed for our tow dolly . Going to pull our car behind or RV

by:

The ball mount does what it is designed to do. It extends out enough to clear my oversized spare tire creating room to connect my pop up trailer to my Jeep with ample distance between the coupler and my spare tire. The 3/4" rise lifts up, and levels out my trailer, which until now, lacked sufficient ground clearance, and makes it safer to tow. This inexpensive purchase saved me a few hundred dollars by not having to purchase a new bumper and tire mount to relocate my spare tire. It's a quality product, and I would recommend it to anyone experiencing similar issues.

Its still performing great!

by:

I bought this Curt Trailer Hitch Ball Mount because of its longer length. This would position my boat far enough away from the back hatch of my car, that I can open the hatch without fear of hitting my boat. It has worked exactly as I hoped, and would highly recommend this item, and etrailier. I have bought other items from etrailer and have never been disappointed in the items or customer service.

It is still working as advertised and what I had hoped for. No problems. Would recommend to anyone needing a little extra room between the back of the tow vehicle and the boattrailer.

by:

here are pics of ball mount I purchased installed on son's Jeep

by:

The hard-to-find , extra long trailer hitch ball mount was received in a couple days and is a well made , quality item. I would recommend etrailer to anyone.

Bruce L.The Curt ball mounts have worked like a charm. The extra long mounts allows my wife to turn sharp corners without jack knifing the trailer.

by:

Great product and great price.

by:

Always satisfied with my purchases at etrailer, this one was no different. The extra long ball mount easily clears the oversized spare on my Jeep. Great price and quick shipping!

It can not be mounted at 90 degrees. No electric jack like this can. If you are worried about...

  • What do I Need to Tow My 2021 Nucamp TAB 320S with My 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon?
From the sound of your question, it sounds like you are trying to figure out what you need in order to attach your 2021 Nucamp TAB 320S to your 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with an off-road coupler. From my research, I discovered that your camper has a gross trailer weight of 2,900 pounds. As long as you have enough gross towing weight capacity on your hitch like the 4,500 pounds of the Draw-Tite Hitch - 2" # DT78MR on your Jeep, you will be safe to tow. For the coupler itself,...

  • How to Determine Which Ball Mount Will Have Enough Rise for Curt Hitch on a 2005 Chrysler 300c
The best way to determine which ball mount is right for your 2005 Chrysler 300c and your trailer is to take a few simple measurements. Since you don't have the hitch we can see by the video of the Curt # 13465, I've attached, that the hitch receiver is going to be 10-1/4 inches from the ground. You will then want to take a similar measurement from the bottom of the coupler to the ground. Then compute the difference. If the hitch height is greater than the trailer height, then •hitch...

  • Is Tow Weight Rating Reduced When Using Long 12-5/8" Curt Ball Mount
Not at all! The Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop - 12-5/8" Long # D-26 is rated for 750 lbs tongue weight and 7,500 lbs towing so you just need to keep from exceeding the lower rated component, whether that's your trailer hitch receiver or this ball mount. The reason hitch extenders reduce weight ratings is because they are pushing limits further out than what various products have been tested and approved for. This ball mount has been tested and approved for the ratings mentioned above...

  • Do Longer Hitch Extenders Reduce Hitch Capacity
There isn't a 100% direct mathematical relationship I'm aware of but yes, the further rearward you go from the hitch receiver, the lower the tongue weight capacity gets. Which is why extenders typically will reduce a trailer hitch's capacity by at least half or more. The same doesn't hold true for a longer ball mount, because it's a single piece and not an add-on like an extender. I'm assuming you have a 2 inch class III receiver on your 2012 Outback. I'm not sure what kind of rise/drop...

It is not recommended to invert the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 for towing purposes. The extended receiver is only intended for accessory use not for a ball mount and trailer connection. Your trailer hitch's tongue weight will also be reduced by 50% when you use your bike rack in this adapter, so you will want to account for that as well. My recommendation is to use a longer ball mount like the # D-26 to give you that extra length you desire.

  • Do Extended Length Ball Mounts Reduce Tongue Weight Capacity
A longer ball mount such as # D-26 will not lower your tongue weight capacity, because it's a single piece. Adding an extender introduces an additional component between the hitch and the load, which allows extra bounce and movement. Those forces, when combined with the additional distance are what can potentially damage the hitch, and explains why using extenders reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity by half. The # D-26 still retains a 7500 lb capacity. I hope that helps!
