Free-backing, driver-side drum brake won't engage when you reverse, even if your actuator is activated. Automotive-grade friction pads and e-coated backing plate are long-lasting. Fits 14-1/2", 15", 16" and 16-1/2" wheels.

Features:

  • Hydraulic drum brake assembly is designed for use with a surge-type trailer brake actuator
  • Free-backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brake, even if the actuator is activated
    • Fall-away brake shoe only anchors on drum when brakes are engaged as trailer is moving forward
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gear allows for a more precise setting
  • E-coated backing plate resists wear and corrosion
  • Single plunger design
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assembly and off of the shoes
  • Mounting bolts and hardware (BRKH12S) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO
  • Configuration: left hand (driver's side)
  • Dimensions: 12" diameter x 2" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 5 bolt
  • Wheel size: 14-1/2", 15", 16" and 16-1/2"
  • Axle rating: 5,200 lbs, 6,000 lbs, and 7,000 lbs
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

This free-backing hydraulic brake assembly has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

This trailer brake assembly acts as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for this brake to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKFBBRK-7L Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 12 inch, left hand, free backing, hydraulic brake assembly for 7000 pound axles. This hydraulic rim drum brake assembly is designed for use with the surge type trailer brake actuators. This certain one is a free backing design, as you can tell that by the D shaped shoe right here. The free backing design will let you back up without engaging your trailer brake, even if that actuator is activated. Has a fall away brake shoe which will only anchor on the drum when the brakes are engaged as the trailer's moving forward. On these assemblies the brake shoes are lined with a nice automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded.

It's not riveted to the shoes, gives a longer life, more braking torque. The lining itself has tapered edges and then they do a circular grinding to the material to help prevent any cracking or crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup. These are a manual adjustment brake, that'd be adjusted down here. On a manual adjustment brake, that does require periodic adjustments to them. What's nice on this one, on the star wheel, the gear itself is a fine tooth brake adjustment gear and that allows for a more precise setting. Also, there is no break-in period needed. The backing plate on this assembly has a nice E-coating to it to help resist wear and corrosion.

Also, what's nice, you'll notice at the very bottom, there's a hole here that you stick your tool through to do your adjustment to your brakes. Normally, there's no in plug there, and the problem that is, is you can get dirt inside there and cause problems with the braking, so this one actually includes the rubber adjuster plug. You just pop this plug out and you can put your tool in and then when you're done adjusting, you put the plug back in. The mounting bolts, the nuts and the lock washers are sold separately. We do sell those on our website. This brake assembly is certified for QAI, which is Quality Assurance International, and CSA, which is Canadian Standards Association. This hydraulic brake is a single plunger, or also called uni-servo design, as you can see.

The size on this is a 12 inch by 2 inch, and when they say the size, this is the driver's side, or left-hand, brake assembly for 7000 pound axles. When they say the size of 12 inch by 2, 12 inch is the diameter which is measured here to here, and the 2 inches is the width of the brake shoe, or the pad. Basically, if we take a ruler, edge to edge you can see is 12 inches, and the width on the pad lining is 2 inches, so 12 inches by 2 inches. This is designed for an axle that's rated for 7000 pounds. I had mentioned this is a free backing design. It does use 12 inch drum, and the other thing, this is a 5 bolt brake flange mount.

You can see the 5 holes here, so you do have to make sure that the axle, when you install these on, will have the 5 bolt pattern to their brake mounting flange. That should do it for the review on the 12 inch, left hand, free backing, hydraulic brake assembly for 7000 pound axles.

Brake assemblies fit perfectly in place of the OEM Dexter brakes. Quality looks fine, aluminum wheel cylinders are a notable improvement. We'll have to wait another 10 years to see if these hold up as well as the US-made Dexters.

Everything was there. All assembled. The only thing I did before I mounted the backing plates was to remove the adjuster wheel and take it apart and put some marine grease on the threads and under the cap. Other than that, I just bolted it on the axle, hooked up the brake line, and I was good to go. That easy.

Why are they no instructions when I click on instructions? That’s not gonna make for a good review!!

I bought these new for less than the local brake materials shop quoted me to rebuild the old brakes. They have a nice coating that should resist rust for awhile. They seem to slow the trailer well. I would buy them again.

by:

Very helpful staff. I did all 4 breaks and bearings complete. Glad I checked things out, seals were gone and one wheel had bearings that failed and I was lucky I made it home. Also put on new brake lines and master cylinder, all good now. Tnks

After calling around to Napa, Koi and 2 other trailer companies and not receiving any help I called etrailer and got in touch with Quinn. I explained what I was needing, and he not only found me the right parts, but he also told me about the house brand which was a cheaper option. Everything showed up in 2 days and fit perfectly.

  • Timbren Axle Less Setup for Trailer with 4 inch Lift and Surge Brake Compatible
Best option would be the Timbren Axle Less kit part # ASR35HDS05 which has a 3,500 lb capacity and has a 4 inch lift built into it. It has brake flanges on the spindle already too so all you need to do is attach the hydraulic style of assemblies you want as well as install the hub/drums. For a hub you'd need the part # 8-201-9UC3-EZ and for brake assemblies part # AKFBBRK-7R for the right hand side and part # AKFBBRK-7L for the left hand side.

  • Brakes for Home Built Trailer With 7K Axle and 12 x 2 Drum
For a 7K axle with 12 X 2 inch drum, we have the # AKFBBRK-7L (left) and # AKFBBRK-7R (right) that you refer to. These are free-backing hydraulic drum brake assemblies designed for use with a surge-type trailer brake actuator.

  • Does Trailer Axle Determine Overall Capacity and Recommended 7,000 Pound Hub and Drum
A trailer axle will typically be the best indicator of its overall capacity, but there are other components that may contribute to this as well. A trailer is always going to be limited by its weakest component. So, a trailer with two 7,000 pound axles will indeed have a capacity of 14,000 pounds, assuming that all other components on the trailer also match or exceed this rating. For example, if the trailer has two 7,000 pound axles but the hubs, wheels, or frame itself have a smaller rating,...

  • Recommendation on Switching from Electric Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Mobile home axles were designed as a one time use axle. The spindle of these axles are usually come in odd sizes, making it them incompatible with standard trailer hubs and parts. If any of these part need replacing, then the standard trailer hubs and parts will not work and then you may have to change your axles. However, if you are going to reuse your wheel hubs and if you have a 5 bolt brake flanges on the axles, then we might be able to find the parts needed to convert over to hydraulic...
