Probably not totally needed, but I like the extra security it provides when hauling road bikes or other bikes with skinny/small tires. I keep them right inside the doors of my vehicle and haven't had an issue with them sliding on the strap or anything like that. I haven't had to replace any yet, but if I had to I wouldn't hesitate to buy it from etrailer again.597961
