Testing a Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller and Trailer Brake Magnets to Eliminate SH Code
Question:
Hi, How can I best test the Magnets on a RV electric brake system. My Prodigy reads a S.H. code. Any suggestions.

The SH error code on the Prodigy indicates a general problem with the brake output circuit. In your case, in addition to the magnets possibly causing the problem, it is a good idea to check the rest of the system as well.
I would check the magnets for wear before going on to test them with a meter. If the magnets show abnormal wear or if you can see the windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet then they will need to be replaced.
To further test your magnets, first make sure the trailer is not connected when performing this test. If the trailer is connected, you run the risk of shorting out a brake controller or various other electrical components. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers testing a brake magnet.
To further test the rest of the system, start with the trailer connector on the vehicle. Make sure it is not corroded or damaged in any way. Do the same with the connector on the trailer.
Next, trace the output circuit back from the connector on the trailer. Look for any pinch points or worn, nicked, or cracked insulation. If there is a worn spot on the back of the wire that is in contact with a metal portion of the trailer, it will short out at that point.
Then, check the connections between the magnet and the output circuit. Make sure that one wire coming off of each magnet is securely grounded to the trailer frame, and the other wire is attached to the output circuit.
If your brake magnets are worn to the point that they need replacement, you will be able to see the copper windings through the face of the magnet.
