Trailer Brakes on 1977 Camper Will Not Release when Going Forward
Question:
i have a 1977 camper with Dexter electric brakes. i had a trailer shop go over the brakes and everything worked until we hooked it up to my truck. the brakes will go on in the forward motion but will not release in the forward motion. they will release if you back up. i am not the mechanic i am the owner just relating what i have been told. to me it sounds like the magnets are bad and the brakes are an integral part of the axle so replacing them is out. from what i see the round hockey puck style magnets are not available. do i now have a trailer without brakes? the trailer shop tested them with a portable power source.

It could be the magnets, wiring, or the trailer connectors on the trailer and truck. First, make sure that the truck and trailer connectors are clean and free of corrosion on the pins and where the wires attach. If you are using a 6-Way round trailer connector, one problem might be the positions of the brake output and 12 volt power pins are switched either on the truck or trailer connector. I would need to know what connectors are being used on the truck and trailer.
Check the brake controller settings as well as its positioning. If bumped it could have affected the performance. The brake controller needs to be mounted as described in the instructions.
If the mechanic tested it with an independent power source then it would seem unlikely that it is the magnets. You may potentially have magnet BP01-140 which is for Dexter 12 x 2 inch brakes on pre-1988 mobile home style axles (the brakes are welded to the axle). I have linked some FAQ articles that should be helpful.
