Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we'll be taking a quick look at the dual battery isolator switch. This is a handy piece to have in your RV, your truck, your boat, anywhere that you have two batteries, one that's going to start the vehicle and the other one that you want to power your accessories. So if you've got an RV or maybe you've converted a van to use as like a mini RV, you can use this to separate the one battery to just actually start your engine and power your alternator, but then the other battery could be used for your fans, your lights, and other things like that. So it helps to prevent that first battery from getting drained and you getting stuck. It can also allow you to use that second battery as a jump, because you could use these in parallel, and you can switch from one to the other. So let's take a little closer look at the switch.
Has this large dial here so you can control everything, and pretty straightforward indicators. So this would be saying that it's turning on the second battery, then we've got them going in parallel, and then it's on the first battery, and now it's off. We open up the bottom side, you can see all the connections. Kind of stick a finger in there and pop it open. So we'll have three connections to make for our wiring, and then the panels here on each side, those can be knocked out to allow your wires to go through.
So right now they're solid, but you can just push on those to pop those out as needed for your connections. The contacts are silver plated, so it should give you a nice, long-lasting electrical connection in there. Silver's a pretty good conductor. It is a rotary-style switch as you saw, and it has a continuous current rating of 300 amps, can handle a surge current rating of 1000 amps. It has an IP rating of 54, so that means that it's not quite dustproof, but it can withstand a lot of different areas, and it can be splashed with water. So you can mount this somewhere that's maybe going to encounter occasional water, but you don't want to have it anywhere that's going to be sprayed continuously.
So you don't really want this outside, but it can probably handle being in your engine bay and being around somewhat wet conditions. But the dryer the spot you can find a spot for this guy, the better. It does not have any mounting hardware that comes with it, so you will have to provide that on your own. The voltage rating for this is 12 volts up to 24 volts, and it does have a one-year warranty. As far as size, this base measures about 2 3/4 inches on either side, and then the height is right about 3 inches. The mounting holes, center to center, about 2 1/4 inch apart, and about 3/8ths of an inch in diameter.
So any 3/8ths or 1/4 inch hardware should work out just fine. But that's really all there is to it for our look at the dual battery isolator switch. I hope this video has been helpful in deciding if this is the right piece for you. Again, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
