Parts Needed to Upgrade to a Larger Trailer Tire

Question:

I’m looking to upgrade the tires and rims on my pop up camper and was wandering if it would be beneficial to go from 12” to 13”? I currently have 2 1/4 inches of clearance in both front and back of the tires and 1 1/2 on the inside of the tire against the fender well. My current tires are 5.30-12 Duro Class C on 4 by 4 bolt pattern. If I should stay with the 12” tires, which ones do you recommend? I’m looking to purchase the black Dextar rims on your website. If I purchased tires and rims, can they be mounted before being shipped?

To install a larger 13 inch tire and wheel combo like the Kenda Karrier # AM31952, you will need to get more room for the wheels. With your current tire having a diameter of 21.9 inches and a width of 5.6 inches, these would be quite a bit larger having a diameter of 24.1 inches and a width of 7 inches. You want to keep the side wall of the tire and the wall of the fender somewhere around an inch or inch and a half, but this is not as important as the height. You want to have a minimum of 3 inches from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender while under load. With your current tires being 2 1/4 inches from the fender currently, you will need to gain roughly 5 or 6 more inches to upgrade to a larger tire.

This is something that may be able to be done though. First, you will need to check to see if your leaf springs are above or under the axle. Typically they are above them and an Over Under Kit like the Dexter # K71-384-00 can be used. This is for a 2 3/8 inch axle, but you will want to measure yours to make sure of that. This will get you 2 3/8 inches of lift already.

Second, you can replace your current hangers with something taller. The tallest ones we currently have are the Redline # 115919 at 5 7/16 inches from the top to the center of the bolt hole. The lift on this will depend on the measurements of your current hangers, however.

Lastly, you can install a hanger lift kit. We do not have one specifically for a single axle trailer at the moment, but we do have all the parts needed to piece on together, which I have listed below:

# LC84PJ - Equalizer Plate
# LC34UD - Hanger Spacer
# LC44UD - 9/16 Lock Nut
# LC64UD - 9/16 Washer
# LC74UD - 4 x 9/16 Grade 5 Bolt
# LC94UD - 2 7/8 x 9/16 Shoulder Bolt

As these are single pieces, you would need eight of the # LC64UD and # LC44UD, but four of everything else. Doing this would add approximately 2 more inches of lift to the trailer.
