Installation of a 7-way Trailer Connector on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma Without the Factory Tow Package

Are these the parts I need to hook up my 2016 Toyota tacoma with out the tow package? Hm40975 ,hm40985 and 119178kit . Is there any special installation instructions?

Since you do not have the factory tow package on your 2016 Toyota Tacoma, you will first need the 4-way which the # C56349 will give you.

To adapt that 4-way into a 7-way you will be able to use the Hopkins # HM40975 and the # HM40985 you mentioned, but I highly recommend the # ETBC7 instead, because it will include all the wires and adapters you will need. I have included a Help Article and install video on the ETBC7 for your convenience. If you would rather stick with the Hopkins connectors you will need # 5506 to wire up the brake controller functions properly, and install very similarly to the ETBC7.

If you don't already have a brake controller, I really like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. It is a proportional brake controller which means it senses how the tow vehicle is slowing or stopping and applies the trailer's brakes with the same intensity. It also has a full display screen instead of codes that need deciphering. The P2 # 90885 is like the P3's little brother, it has all the great qualities but the display of the P2 isn't as user friendly.

As you will see in the installation video, the brake controller will come with a open ended plug which will have a red wire. It will connect to the cold side of the brake switch. To find the right brake switch wire use a circuit tester such as the # PTW2993 to test the wires. You need the one that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed.
