Specs:

  • Designed to replace Fabex 665 and M&M 665 5th-wheel pin boxes
  • Towing capacity: 30,000 lbs
  • Pin weight capacity range: 2,000 lbs - 4,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"
  • 5-Year limited warranty

Notes:

  • Average break-in period for hitch = 1,000 miles.
  • In order for the pin box's shock absorption to work correctly, make sure your pin weight is within the pin weight range.
  • To calculate correct towing weight for Gen-Y hitches, use this formula: GVWR x 0.22 = TW.
  • Because the Gen-Y Hitch Executive may be shorter than the Fabex 665 or M&M 665 pin box, the clearance between your trailer and tow vehicle during turns might be reduced.

Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter

Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.

You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.

A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.

Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion with cable

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Shock Absorbing Pin Box - GY68FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at the shock absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck pin box by Gen-Y Hitch. This is gonna be for those of you who already have a Gooseneck ball in your truck most of your trailers are Gooseneck trailers but you have that one trailer that's a 5th wheel, whether it's a new camper or what have you. And so this is going to be an option for towing that 5th Wheel trailer with your Gooseneck ball. Now, there are really three options that you have to try and tow that 5th Wheel trailer with a Gooseneck ball. The first option is a 5th Wheel hitch that fits onto your Gooseneck ball sits inside your truck bed, that's gonna be a really steady, secure connection for you, the main problem with it is that those 5th Wheel hitches are very heavy and if you are gonna be switching back and forth between your Gooseneck and your 5th Wheel trailer you're gonna have to lift that hitch up set it somewhere, store it then lift it back in place and get it installed, if you want to use your 5th Wheel again, so very heavy cumbersome, so probably not the most ideal option, if you are switching back and forth.

The second option would be an adapter that bolts onto your pin box, it will fit right on to your king pen and then have a coupler for your Gooseneck ball to fit onto, so that's a little bit more convenient, it's gonna be more of a permanent option for you. The downside to that is that's really two connection points that could potentially fail or have damage done or just be a less secure option for you so, that's probably not the best option for pulling your 5th Wheel trailer with your gooseneck ball. Then your third option would be this guy. So this is a way to basically convert your 5th wheel trailer to a gooseneck trailer. This is going to fit in place of your current pin box, so it's gonna integrate with your trailer.

Everything's gonna be seamless, you're not gonna have to worry about different components fitting together, it's gonna provide that gooseneck coupler that attaches to your trailer. So really nice option here. This is designed specifically to work in place of the FABEX 665 and M&M 665 5th Wheel Pin Boxes. It's gonna have the same width and alignment for you. The only difference being these, the included hardware, so the hardware that you currently have installed on your pin box isn't gonna be beefy enough, so they include this hardware so that you can get that all set up.

But it's gonna be a very simple process just a bolt on installation. So, you take your old pin box down, put this one up in its place, use that new hardware to get it secured and you're ready to go. Now, as far, it is simple but this is a very heavy component, and your original pin box is probably very heavy as well. So you are gonna definitely want a couple sets of hands, probably a Jack in the back of your truck to kinda, slowly let that original pin box down and put this one up in its place, so, very simple to do, but it is gonna be a little bit of a strain for you. This is a nice sturdy, heavy duty steel construction.

So it's gonna be very durable and strong gives us a towing capacity of 25,000 pounds, of course, that is the trailer and the load included. It's gonna give us a maximum pin weight capacity the downward weight on our gooseneck ball of 4,500 pounds and a minimum pin weight of 2000 pounds. Now that might seem kind of strange to you if you're not familiar with a minimum pin weight but the for that is because of our shock absorbing functionality here, so this is gonna need at least 2000 pounds for it to properly engage and do what it's supposed to do. And this basically functions like a torsion axle, if you're familiar with that concept. So each of these pivot points there's gonna be a square bar inside there that's gonna be twisting and turning as the components move, the each corner there's gonna be a rubber cord, so as that bar twists and moves, it's gonna be absorbed by the motions gonna be absorbed by those rubber cords. So it's gonna help absorb that shock and it's gonna prevent the road shock from transferring from your trailer up to your vehicle and vice versa. So it's gonna be a really nice smoothing option, it's going to help limit your bounce and jarring up and down. It's going to help reduce the chucking and rough fore and aft motion that you times get when you're towing your 5th wheel trailer, so having this installed is gonna be really nice. And one of the main benefits of this system is that there's no maintenance at all. So, unlike some of your other systems that might utilize an airbag in there where you have to make sure that the airbag has enough air pressure adjust it one way or the other, it's gonna be a little bit of a pain to have to maintain it over time. This is gonna be basically a set it and forget it kind of thing. So once you get it installed it's just automatically gonna start adjusting for that road shock and make the ride a lot smoother for you. But to ensure that we have the proper amount of weight to ensure that our system's going to properly engage they do include this pin weight scale. So you can see we've got a red sticker on the top and bottom, and then a green sticker in the middle. And then we've got this white line here. So as we get loaded up, ready to tow we wanna make sure that that white line is lining up with this green portion of the sticker. That way we'll know that everything is lined up it's properly balanced so that our shock absorbing system is going to properly engage. As far as latching, this is gonna be a very simple option. This is gonna fit right onto your standard 2 and 5/16th inch goose hitch ball- Gooseneck hitch ball. It is a self latching lever, so once you get it in place, set it down it's gonna to automatically hold it, so it's gonna be nice and secure right away. You're not gonna have to worry about putting a pin in place or anything like that. And then when you're ready to disconnect, we've got this the cable latch here, that's going to allow us to lift up and disconnect that self latch from the back of our truck or right around our trailer so that we don't have to climb into the truck bed or reach in there and trying to deal with that pin. Very simple to pull on that cable and disconnect it so that we can more easily get onto our next thing. You can see we do have these cross shaped holes here, now these are for our safety chains. So our safety chain hooks will slide right in there and gives us a nice connection point for those for that extra connection point. In addition to our steel construction this does have a nice powder coat finish. So it's gonna help resist against corrosion it's gonna help it hold up really well for years to come. If you're not familiar, Gen-Y does have a great reputation of building very sturdy, heavy duty components. And this is no exception, this is a nice beefy pin box for you. Like I said, it is gonna take several sets of hands to get it installed, but once it's installed, it's gonna have that stability that you can trust. It's gonna do the job you need it to do. You're not gonna have to worry about your connection to your truck, everything is gonna be nice and solid and sturdy for you. This is made here in the USA, so you can trust. It's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know in trust for products that are made here in the us. So if you are wanting to switch your 5th Wheel trailer to work with your Gooseneck, and you have that FABEX 665 or M&M 665, this is gonna be a really great option, make that much easier for you, so that you have a nice, sturdy, dependable connection, that's going to be very simple to switch out from one gooseneck trailer to the next. So it's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. I hope this video has been helpful for you in determining if this is gonna be the right fit for you. We do have lots of other options available here at etrailer.com. So if this isn't quite what you're looking for, I'd encourage you to check some of those other options out. That's gonna complete our look for today. Thanks for watching..

The Gen-Y gooseneck has been excellent! I now have approximately 12k miles on mine and it rides very nicely with very limited chucking and handles rough roads very well. I’d highly recommend that you contact Gen-Y BEFORE ordering to ensure you get the correct load rating product. Gen-Y and Etrailer have provided excellent customer and tech support! This product definitely frees up your truck bed and does require a precise line up to hitch.

by:

This hitch reduced chucking very well, I have a 2004 3500 Dodge Ram 4x4 Conestoga riding truck with very stiff suspension, the torsion action of the hitch definitely helps when crossing bridges and pot holes. The 5th wheel is an older Keystone Copper Canyon that is in great shape. I Have 12K miles with the new hitch.

by:

I love this hitch I put it on my 35’ Astoria fifth wheel it pulls great and the shock absorbers help with a smooth ride.we took a ten day trip from Ga to Maine last September and had no problems with this hitch. I guess the only negative is that it’s not as easy as a regular fifth wheel hitch to hook up by yourself but after a few times you can line it up ok. The best thing is that no big hitch taking up space in my truck bed just a ball

by:

I have towed now for a few thousand miles since changing to this pin box and honestly wish I had done this years ago! It tows so much better than my 5th wheel box did! Feels more stable, no more bucking and so much softer and better feel when towing! Not to mention so much less hassle dealing with a 5th wheel hitch!

by:

Makes life a lot easier l don’t have to remove my hitch from the bed of my truck to use it. Just flip the ball and there you go.
The gooseneck hitch actually pulls better than the 5th wheel hitch I had.
It is rather heavy so come up with a good plan for installing, I used the front end loader on my tractor which allowed me to do the install by myself.
Great product!!!

by:

I have been well pleased and excepcetionally satisfied with the Gen-Y pin box. We just returned from Texas making a 3000 mile roundtrip and encountered multiple rough roads. There was none of the chucking that I experienced towing with the turning point 5th wheel. A gooseneck is much superior to a 5th wheel in my opinion

by:

I’m really happy with my purchase. Please take into account that this hitch is 2-3” shorter than the kingpin box. They do make an extended version. I had to buy a 4” ball offset, as I couldn’t open my tailgate Without hitting the camper. I love having the open bed space, it seems to be smoother and it’s less noisy then the pin box.

by:

Easy install with a couple people, after install from a fifth wheel hitch it’s noticeable less noisy, less moving parts, frees up bed space and has a much smoother ride. I recommend this hitch 100% for fifth wheel campers.

This product is a chucking ENHANCER, not a chucking dampener. Additionally, despite what you have read, my experience with GenY customer service has been terrible. GenY will not support their warranty program, they will try to tell you everything is OK, when the fact is, their product is faulty and does not function to GenY product literature statements “Built-In Suspension Creates Up to 90% Smoother Ride”.
I purchased the GenY executive hitch from eTrailer on 3/10/23, etrailer sent the wrong unit and to etrailer’s credit - they quickly took responsibility and replaced with the correct unit on 3/24/23. I installed on my DRV Elite Suites PS3 just in time to attend the SOITC rally at the Outer Banks on 4/13/23. When we left for this 750-mile one-way trip, the GenY load indicator was in the middle of the green zone, I measured the pin load at 5,200 pounds. Bedrail clearance was my reason for buying the GenY, it replaced a Trail Air on my DRV and a Reese 27,000-pound hitch on my 2022 F450. Bottom line, the GenY system provided no improvement in bedrail clearance, but did offer the ability to switch in different gooseneck balls to adjust for bedrail clearance.
GenY states that a 1,000-mile break in period is required before the GenY torsion system is fully effective. My experience was that at 750 miles the torsion system on the GenY had sagged to it lowest point with the load indicator in the unit outside of the green, this also resulted in losing nearly two inches of bedrail clearance. It looks like it has a metal-to-metal stop so that the lowest the indicator will go is to the white lines outside of the green. I called GenY from the RV park and was told that the unit would not sag further. I purchased a Curt gooseneck ball which was 2 inches higher than the Ford ball to regain bedrail clearance having to rapid ship it to the RV park.
Chucking became downright scary on the 750-trip home. As an example, chucking was induced every time my truck’s ten-speed transmission shifted up. Upon arrival home, I again contacted GenY customer service with a full expectation that GenY would replace the unit. Instead, here is their response: “I spoke with our QC Manager regarding your hitch. He said that you are in the correct unit and being at the top end of the green is normal after the break-in miles. As for the bedrail clearance he said that you would be able to lower the pin box down a set of bolts (with our pin boxes you are only required a minimum of 4 grade eight bolts per side) or use a B&W ball as they are roughly 1 1/2” taller.” This is unacceptable...

by:

Does a fantastic job. After 4 or 500 miles the ride quality smoothed out considerably. Extremely well built!!

by:

Without a doubt the biggest difference maker I have ever used in my 50 plus years pulling trailers. When my wife had to concede that the Gen-Y gooseneck hitch made such a drastic difference.... enough said!

by:

Great replacement for the Curt Turning Point pin box! Easy to install and took a couple hours since I did it by myself. I had to purchase new 5/8” locknuts as the originals from the Curt install needed replacing. I also had to buy (4) 5/8” nuts from Tractor Supply since the Curt install had nuts welded on the front 4 bolt locations. I used the Curt 5/8” bolts and flat washers since they did not need replacing. I haven’t had a chance to get the trailer on the road yet, but see no reason why it will not pull nicely with the Gen Y gooseneck. It will be pulled with a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 6.6 Duramax and 10 speed Allison transmission.

by:

Best upgrade I have done on my RV. Hitching up a gooseneck is a little more difficult but well worth it. It allowed me to remove the large heavy 5th wheel hitch out of the bed of the truck. I love the damping of the trailer bouncing. This hitch allows my RV move with the truck and I don’t feel that bounce of the truck is passed to the RV hitch like it was with the 5th wheel hitch. Hitch is heave and it really would help to have two people to install it. I’ve done it twice. Once with help and once without. Using the bed of the truck and a lever I was able to install the hitch myself.

by:

The toy hauler pulls so much smoother. I wasn’t expecting to increase my MPG but, I gained a 1/2 mile per gallon. Dealing with etrailer was great as usual.

by:

Quality build, easy install, let your truck and trailer do the heavy lifting. My wife and I did this install and took about an hour to get it bolted. I also bought the Grade 8 bolt kit. I’m hauling 20K GTW. The original hitch had Grade 5 bolts and only 5 per side. Now I have 6 per side, 160ft.lb. on bolt torque

by:

Order arrived on time. Packaging looked almost perfect with one corner of the box slightly damaged. Two of us installed the hitch without too much of a problem. It is heavy. Used some WD40 on the inside of the mount. Balance it on the tailgate of the truck. One strong man plus an old guy was able to get it installed. I will update this once we have a couple thousand miles on it.

by:

All I can say is THANK YOU Tiffani S.! At first there was a mix-up and some issues with the order and re-applying a rebate that had expired, but finding Tiffani fixed everything. She was able to make things happen the way they should've from the beginning, and she got me all squared away. I have not installed the hitch yet, but things look like they should fit and are high quality.

by:

This pull so much nocer than a 5th wheel hitch.

by:

This was the perfect replacement for my 5th wheel king pin. It was easy to install and has a much smoother ride! I would definitely purchase this again!

by:

Because of my bad back I replaced my B&W Companion hitch & Lippert Rota Flex hitch pin which I loved using. There is a learning curve with hitching a gooseneck trailer but with some reflective tape on the center line above the coupler on the gooseneck and a telescoping yellow ball hitching aid with a magnetic base on the truck bed just in front of the ball. This hitch setup is softer and smoother towing than my old setup and I have about 5k miles of use.

by:

Installation was very straight forward, it is heavy so you need something to prop it up for you while you get at least one bolt started in each side. I used the bucket on my tractor to hold it up. I only have one tow in so far for about 50 miles so still early to review. It certainly works as advertised for taking out a lot of the trailer feedback on rough roads, uneven transitions, etc. It is an improvement in ride quality and makes towing a big fifth wheel more comfortable. Necessary? Probably not but it does spoil you a little bit. One problem though that Gen-Y is working on fixing is the ball to pinbox is a little bit longer and I did hit the bed cap at about 60 deg of turn while backing in at an angle. It cleared when I tested it in the flat driveway, but not by much. They are going to come up with a fix. I'm at 7 1/2" clearance from the overhang to the bed caps sitting flat. This is with a '18 Chev Silverado HD 8' bed and a '19 Momentum 351M

by:

The Gen-Y hitch is very stout & well built. Fit & finish was excellent.
Installed myself in about 30 minutes.

by:

Just wanted to give you a heads up, hitch just arrived as promised. Packing could have been a bit more effective as it is apparent that its been dropped unfortunately it broke the finish in a couple places. I will address it and im not asking for anything as i know your not the shipper. Thanks

by:

Are you kidding ? This has got to be the best hitch setup available on the market of ALL hitches. Fantastic, durable, quiet, no bucking, chucking or issues of any kind. We have a 16,000 lb, trailer and I sometimes forget we are even towing with our 2018 F-450. I have recommended this hitch to everyone and enjoy the "clean" truck bed when not towing.

by:

Just received today after I tracked the whereabouts with not-so-accurate UPS LTL FREIGHT tracking. I difficulty located local freight company that just received this terribly torn up cardboard package with this 205# parcel. Hitch had been placed onto some pallet enroute because it was no longer contained in its GEN Y box. Extent of damage I’ve yet to determine though it has a long and deep gash into the powder coat finish down the exposed side.

  • Selecting 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter for 2020 Heartland Bighorn 39MB With 16k GVWR
You could technically use the # RP94716-61301 since you won't exceed the rating but you would be better off with the 20k version instead. Manufacturers recommend only using 80-85% of the capacity so there is a safety margin. You also want to double check the sticker or measure the bolt pattern on your pin box to identify it and make sure you get the correct replacement. For example, this Reese Goose Box fits Lippert 0115, 1116, and 1716. We don't currently have the 20k version since Reese...

The Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box like the # GY98GR you looked at is a great option for converting your 5th wheel to a gooseneck. However, unless you have a tapered nose you won't be able to make those 90 degree turns. If you still want to go this route the correct pin box is determined by using the formula GVWR x .22 = TW. Since your GVWR is 12,192 lbs that comes out to 2,682 lbs so you need a 4,500 lb tongue weight model. You can choose from the following based on the pin...
