Will a Hitch Extender Reduce the Capacity of a Thule T2 Bike Rack # TH917XT
Question:
I have a Thule 917XT T2 Bike Carrier. My Car 2007 Subaru Outback Wagon has a factory/dealer class 1 1.25 hitch rated at 200Lbs maximum gross tongue weight and 2,700 lbs maximum gross trailer weight. The end of my hitch is not flush with my bumper, but rather sits in or under the car by 5. As a result, I cannot fold up the Thule 917XT T2 Bike Carrier when not in use to carry bikes. So I was considering adding an extender such as the D189. Will the use of the extender reduce the maximum weight that the bike carrier can carry? Per the manual, the current limit is 60lbs per bike and 100lbs maximum.

Expert Reply:
An extender will reduce the capacity of the hitch, not your bike rack, by 50 percent. Your hitch is rated at 200 pounds maximum tongue weight, if you were to use an extender, your tongue weight capacity would be reduced to 100 pounds.
Subtract 55 pounds for the TH917XT and you have 45 pounds left for the bikes. As long as the bikes you are carrying weight 45 pounds or less, you can use the extender.
