Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

Question:

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. It did not come with a factory tow package. I need a 7 way wiring kit for it. Do you have this product? I only see the 4-way kit for my specific vehicle. Thank You

If your 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited did not have a factory trailer package you'll need to start off with a basic 4-pole wiring harness and then add the 7-way. Once you have a 7-way installed this connector will be able to carry trailer brake, tail and turn light functions as well as carry 12V auxiliary power, trailer brake power and reverse light signals - once those additional connections are made.

The 4-pole harness I suggest for your vehicle is the Tow Ready # 118394 which is a plug-and-play type that requires NO cutting or splicing of wires.

With this in place you can add 7-way socket # 37185 to convert the format from the 4-pole flat type to the 7-way RV-style. With adapter part # 37185 plugged in to the 4-pole this dual connector socket will let you connect either a 4-pole or a 7-way trailer plug which gives you the flexibility to tow both types of trailers.

With these two items installed you will have only trailer lighting signals on the 7-way. If that is all you need - meaning no trailer brakes, no 12V trailer power feed and no reverse lights - then you're all set.

If you intend to make those additional circuit connections then instead of part 37185 you'll need our brake controller install kit # ETBC7. This kit will enable you to make the connections for the lighting functions and both brake and 12V power signals to your trailer. The brake controller I recommend is the Prodigy P2 # 90885 which is among the most popular, versatile and reliable units offered. I have linked an article and video showing installation of this kit and the P2 brake controller.
