  • Lug nut/bolt size: 19 mm and 21 to 22 mm
  • Quantity: 2 tire chains
  • Internal clearance required: 0 mm
  • 5-Year warranty

Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

If you're looking for a way to get traction in the snow without scratching your rims, these K-Summit chains are your best option. The chain only sits on the tire tread and is fastened to one of the lug nuts on your wheel with an easy-to-use fixing key. There are no attachments behind the wheel like typical tire chains, which ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well. You won't have to stop and readjust these chains either - they self-tension, self-center, and conform to the tire perfectly as you drive, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. These chains are ideal for use in light snow and ice.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you wont be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Because these chains are customizable, the first fitting could take a little time but after that, it's simple. The included instructions will let you know if you need to adjust the chains based on your tire size.

Remove lug cover if present

1. To begin installation, you'll need access to your wheel's lug nuts. If you have a plate covering your lug nuts, pop it off using either the included Allen key or a flathead screwdriver.

Determine size of lug nuts

2. Determine which lug nut adapter you'll need to fit over the nut on your wheel. Attach that adapter to the included fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included.

Lay chains over tire thread

3. Fit the chain over your wheel, getting it as far onto the tire as possible.

Tighten lug nut adapter

4. Using the fixing key, thread the included bolt into the adapter. The other end of the fixing key will attach to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

The adapter secures over your lug nut to hold the K-Summit base in place on your wheel. You might need to use the included spacer to get the chains to sit properly.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Fits tight as a drum! The K44 is nice and snug on my 19’s. Kinda nervous about the stress on the tensioning strap and lug nut clinchers, but these things will be sweet if the Engineers did their job right! Only plan to use these for a few miles at a time, so if all goes well they’ll last me a good long while

2011 BMW 5 Series

Great product and fast shipping from etrailer. I purchased the Konig K-Summit chains for my 2011 BMW 535i. They are easy to install and take off. Make sure you install the chains at home before you need them. The lug nut attachments that came in the box would not fit the lug nuts on my cars wheel, so I had to obtain an attachment that did fit. Do not exceed 30MPH when the chains are installed. The chains will come apart and damage your car if you exceed the speed restriction. Unfortunately, this happened to me when using my first pair of Thule K-Summit chains - new tire and body damage $2,000. But if you stay below 30MPH , the chains are great.

Hyundai Genesis

I only used it one time during the year, but it sure came in handy. It is particularly useful for me because of the very limited space in the wheel well of the Genesis coup. Fitting to the lug bolt was a little tricky but did work.
I try to travel into the Rockies at least once a winter so that’s why I bought the chains

After having a hard time figuring out how to assembly it due to lack of written instructions along with the illustration, I was able to mount them with technical help from the manufacurer engineering dept. I am very unsure if I made a good choice in purchasing this product. I was led by the marketing of easiness of installation. Now I realize that if one link on the chain breaks, the whole chain safety is compromise whereas in a standard cheaper model (+- $40) you can just remove one link across the tire and replace it easily.
According to Tech. dept. from Thule if on single linkin this chain breaks you can use an emmergency link tighted with plier, but the chain needs to be mailed back to Thurle for repair or replacement. This is a hassle for such a high priced, premium, "ahead of time design". Sure the idea is good, but needs improvement.
The same design that makes it easy of use, renders it useless in case of a broken link. I have not driven with them on snow, but I already see its flaw and I am unsure if I made a wise investment.
It came with one year warranty, but you get the hassle of having to return them for replacement while you go to Pep Boys and buy a cheaper reliable cable chain while the white elephant is in the shop.
What if it breaks after the one year warranty? Waht happened to your U$ 405 plus shipping investment that should bring you peace of mind?
These are a few thought I want to share with you.
Have a great day.

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars.
It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars.
Once fitted you’re good to go.
Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes.

I received excellent service from William at etrailer.com. He promptly answered my questions and took my order. The tire chains were shipped the same day and delivered as promised. Kudos to etrailer for their customer service.

Purchased these awesome chains because my 2019 traverse has custom wheels (wider) so traditional chains/cables that wrap around the wheels would cause damage to my brake components. The instructions in the manual can be a little confusing but read and watch the tutorial video and you'll be good to go. I had to remove the exact amount of bolts from the chains it recommended in the manual for my wheels, 5 if I remember correctly. After a couple dry runs installing/removing at home I was ready for big bear. The family and I spent Thanksgiving up on big bear and yes, it snowed A LOT!! The chains worked great and along with a lot of looks from other drivers, I even got compliments from the locals there that obviously are used to driving with chains. When it came time to take them off halfway down the mountain, it was super fast and easy I was done in no time. NOTE: the bolt that goes over the lug nut leaves an indentation on your lug nuts, especially if your vehicle has the chrome finished ones like mine does. Have to buy a new set of front wheel lug nuts and use the old ones for when we drive up to the snow again and use these cool chains!

So these are really expensive but there weren't a lot of options for my wide 22" tires. Are they worth it? Absolutely! These are my first chains so I wasn't sure what to expect, but once you make the initial size adjustments, it is super easy to get these on! I've seen other cars on the side of the road struggling to get their traditional chains on, where you have to lay down the chains, drive over, then wrap them around the tire and secure them.

With these, I just unfold them, push them onto the tires as far as they will go over the top and front and back, and slowly drive forward until they auto-adjust in place. A quick stop to double-check and make sure they are on all the way, and off I go.

Love them!

by:

Although I have not had a chance to use the chains yet, the chains were easy to assemble and put on my truck tires. I received the order in plenty of time before my trip so that was a huge plus.

by:

Bought these for my Model X and so far I’ve only needed to use them a few times. These chains were pretty easy to put on. The hard part is making sure the lug nut grabber has thoroughly grabber the nut so the chains clamp down properly. Watch some YouTube. Videos

The instructions are pretty clear on how to adjust these for your tire size. Do that adjustment as soon as you can after purchase. As this is not fun to do on the side of the road.

by:

I'm going to start this off by saying they were a bit on the pricey side. But then I'm going to say that they were definitely worth it. They are easy to put on and take off. They hold very securely, and they handle magnificently. I spent last winter driving over the Donner Summit in California every single weekend and the chains kept my Lexus in complete control the entire time. I would definitely buy them again.

by:

Received my Konig K-Summit "K-79's" today. Made the adjustments for my 2023 RAM 1500 Limited tire (285/45/22). Test fitted the Chains as requested. I found the installation easy and straight forward. Hoping things go well in the snow if needed.

by:

Awesome grip. Easy to put in and take off. Great for low-clearance (oversized) wheels. Worth the price.

by:

Shipment was delayed and therefore unusable for my long holiday roadtrip. I paid ~$[XX] expedited shipping for no reason.

by:

Fantastic product! The chains were easy to set up and install on my Audi Q7. They worked perfectly.

You will never find better customer service than what I received from etrailer.com and Konig (Pewag). I wish all companies were that good!

Stay the away from this dangerous, poorly designed, incredibly overpriced, disaster waiting to happen, product.
After following etrailers tire size calculator I ordered the K Summit chains for my Mercedes AMGGLC 43. I live full-time in a Mountain Community at 6000 feet and I’ve had many vehicles and experiences with tire chains and cables. I ordered these chains because of their supposed efficacy with high-performance vehicles with low profile tires, etc. Despite adequate practice pre-storm, by myself and both my sons who are in their 20’s, these over priced dangerous pieces of garbage failed on December 20, 2020 during a blizzard in our community while trying to get my sons to the airport. The right sided chain disappeared after less than 2 miles of driving and we were left stranded in a ditch on the wrong side of the road for days before our vehicle could be towed out due to the high demand in the area. I have been driving in snow conditions since I was a teenager, I am now 65. I have driven in worse conditions with 2 Wheel vehicles with regular chains and rarely failed to get home or around when I needed to. My Mercedes AMG has traction control, all wheel drive, slippery mode, and can be raised to avoid obstacles. Nonetheless, in this unusual freak blizzard, when I needed a chain product the most, these failed me and my family miserably. Their customer support consisted of a never ending chain of transfers from one person or department to another, and to this day I’ve never received a refund or gotten satisfaction. If I could’ve burned the remaining K summit chain I would’ve, but I had to settle for the pleasure of throwing the remaining one away in the expensive case it came in. Do yourself and anyone else you know who is shopping for chains a favor and warm them away from this failure prone overpriced piece of junk. RRT.

by:

The Konig self-tensioning snow chains I purchased were easy to install and worked great. However, I only used them once as a test to check them out. It had snowed just before I received them so the timing was great. I live in an area (East Tennessee) that has steep grades so I tested the chains on the grades-forward and backward while moving, stopped on the steepest grade and able to drive away without slipping, and effective when stopping. The chains were also easy to remove. I've done a lot of driving in the snow all over the US and also in Canada using a variety of chains including ice chains with v bars. The Konig chains were by far the easiest chains I've ever had to install. Incidentally, I have a Trail Rated 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited vehicle which I believe worked nicely to enhance the capabilities of both the Jeep and the chains.

etrailer website says Konig K-Summit XXL KON84FR (K78) is VERIFED TO FIT 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 285/44r22 tires. See screenshot.

After receiving Chains, manual clearly states K79 is REQUIRED to fit 285/44r22 tires. See attached manual pic with highlights.

Also, Konig's website also states K79 is needed. See website screenshot attached.

etrailer does not carry the K79 chains. Also, charged me a ~$xx restocking fee to send back the "Confirmed fit" ones they sent that DO NOT fit.

Any other 2022+ Grand Wagoneer owners with 285/44-25 tires, be warned!

by:

These are super easy to put on and take off. Haven't really needed them too much but when I did use them, they were great.

by:

These chains are clearly a return item. Links removed, dirty, AND they are missing the most essential adapters which I confirmed twice with support and the manufacturer that they included the 17mm, 19, and 21/22mmm. It its the new universal U-Adapter that's fine, but one has 3 grips and the other chain has 5. Clearly a mismatch and neither fit my 17MM lugs. We need to process an RMA/Return and IF you can verify a brand new FULLY outfitted kit I will accept that replacement.

I checked the owners manual of the 2016/2017 Subaru Crosstrek and they state to run Class S compatible traction devices only on the front axle. For your tire size of 225/55-17 the best solution for that is the Konig K-Summit chains part # TH02230K44 because these actually do not drape over the inside of the tire sidewall at all so there would be no risk for clearance issues at all. See picture. These also provide great traction and are easy to install. I attached a link to a review video...

  • What Tire Chains do You Recommend for My 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek?
I have a great tire chains option for you. I went ahead and confirmed with the 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek's owner's manual that Subaru does not recommend using tire chains on your vehicle. However, the reason why manufacturers say this is usually to avoid liability if damage occurs to components inside of your vehicle's wheel wells. I am pleased to say that we have had neighbors who have had great results with the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PW1038 on a Crosstrek with 225/55-17...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2013 Lincoln MKZ with 245/45-18
For a set of tire chains that are a fit for you tire size 245/45-18 that would give you the best possible tire clearance as it does not go over the inside of the shoulder of the tire you would want the # TH02230K44. The CG Tire Chain # TH2004205104 will require 9 mm of clearance. If you have that much clearance already then these would well too.

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for a 2015 BMW X3 with 245/45-19
What tire size do you have? If you have the 245/45-19 the best chance you have for a set of tire chains would be the Thule K-Summit part # TH02230K44. Unlike most chains these require zero inner tire clearance since they do not drape over the inner sidewall of the tire at all so they are great for vehicles that do not have much clearance. These also do not touch the rims like other chains do. While we can't recommend you use chains on a vehicle that the manufacturer states they can't be...

  • Will Thule K-Summit K44 Tire Chains Fit 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek with 225/55-17 Size Tire
The Thule K-Summit Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains, Size K44 # TH02230K44 are confirmed to fit the 225/55-17 size tires on your 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The owner's manual for your XV Crosstrek says tire chains should not be used, but that another type of traction device may be acceptable. The manual gives the example of spring chains, like the K-Summit # TH02230K44, as an alternative to tire chains. The K-Summit # TH02230K44 also comply with the requirement in the owner's...

For the tire size of 275/40-18 the correct Thule K-Summit tire chain is the part # TH02230K44 which is size K44. The K55 set would not fit this tire size. Be sure to check the owners manual of the vehicle you plan to install the chains on for any restrictions on tire chain usage.

  • Thule K-Summit Tire Chain Recommendation for a 245/45-18 Size Tire
Yes, the Thule K-Summit Tire Chains part # TH02230K44 that you referenced will fit the tire size 245/45-18 that you have and that you sent in a picture of. These chains are great because they don't drape over the inside corner of the tire so they do not require any amount of inner tire clearance and they don't touch the rim so you don't have to worry about them damaging the nice finish of your wheels. For an all wheel drive vehicle ideally you would put chains on all four wheels as that...

  • Snow Chain Use on 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek with P225/55R17 Tires
When it comes to using tire chains, the auto maker gets to have the final word. On page 8-11 of the online owner's manual Subaru indicates that standard tire chains cannot be used due to limited clearance between the tires and the vehicle body, but that special low-profile S-Class traction devices CAN be used but only on the FRONT tires. Thule's K-Summit Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # TH02230K44 are S-Class rated and will fit your P225/55R17 size tires. These advanced self-tensioning...
