Tire Chain Recommendation for 2016/2017 Subaru Crosstrek and Which Axle to Use
Question:
Do you recommend that the S cable snow chains be placed on the front tires, or on the rear tires, on a 2016 or a 2017 Crosstrek. My wife and I have two Crosstreks. Thank you.

I checked the owners manual of the 2016/2017 Subaru Crosstrek and they state to run Class S compatible traction devices only on the front axle. For your tire size of 225/55-17 the best solution for that is the Konig K-Summit chains part # TH02230K44 because these actually do not drape over the inside of the tire sidewall at all so there would be no risk for clearance issues at all. See picture. These also provide great traction and are easy to install.
I attached a link to a review video for these chains for you to check out as well.
The other option I also would recommend is Class S compatible too and is actually the easiest to install chains available. The chains I am referring to are the Konig Easy Fit Chains part # TH04115103 that install in a matter of seconds. I attached an install video for these chains on a similar Subaru for you to check out too.
