An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

1999 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

After one year still working like day one. Probably one of the best modifications I’ve ever done to this truck. Won’t have a hauling truck without them going forward.

@Paul We're glad your Timbren # TFR350SDE helper springs are working well for you!

by:

These are easy to install and work well. Road bumps are rougher when empty but not so much when loaded. I like these timbren bumpers. I have air bags on my other truck which I like too but they took a lot more time and effort to install. However you can let the air out and be back to original ride. They're nice too. If you have a truck that is loaded all the time like with a camper then the timbren are a good solution otherwise for daily driving with occasional load the air bags are superior.

I dont like them very much. Serious bouncing with a heavy trailer load.

@Pd To be honest we do hear this a lot with Timbren springs, more so when the truck is unloaded. These are a pretty robust springs since the capacity is 8,600 lbs. For a 1997 Ford F250 4x4 with leaf suspension you can also consider part # HE89SR which which would bolster the leaf springs.

by:

I didn't know what to expect with these rubber springs, but I was pleasantly surprised. The truck rides stiffer empty, but that was to be expected. Truck does not sag at all even fully loaded or pulling a heavy trailer. Well worth the price. And easy to install too.

I never received the item so I canceled and ordered through [online store] I got it the following day. Now, months after I canceled my order, I received this empty box with and note from the mail carrier stating that he delivered an empty box.

2002 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

I bought this helpers for my long trip coming up, at first it took me a bit to figure it out, since my truck and the instructions are different, but once I found out how everything went, it was a very quick process to put them on. Very happy with this timbren rear suspension system.

by:
2001 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

2001 F350 with a 30' heavy gooseneck camper. Major improvement. The only downside is, since my springs are older and sag a bit from factory, unloaded ride is uncomfortable since it doesn't have a gap. Only use it for pulling so it's okay.

by:
2003 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

This is the 3rd time I have purchased the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. I have always been satisfied with the ease of installation and the effectiveness of these springs, whether I am pulling a tow behind trailer, a 5th wheel or carrying a load in my truck. The only thing I did different this time is I purchased the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System with the TorkLift StableLoad Rear Suspension Upgrade. I will post a review on the complete purchase once I install these in addition to the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

2000 f350 drw with timbren 8950 rated spring. I originally bought air bags but the kit didn't work for my truck and I seen the timbren and sumosprings. I opted for the timbren due to the 8950 lb rating for use on my truck. These we so so simple to install like must people claim. While hauling my Arctic Fox camper I noticed a huge improvement. No white knuckle and the handling was amazing. I will always buy these in the future. With the 8950lb springs the ride wasn't too stiff either, I feel it was perfect. On the winding corners in the mountains my truck felt as if I didn't have the camper on it

by:

Product installed fine and worked well. They've held up well for about a year now driving in snowy conditions where salt is used. If I had to do it over I would have purchased air bags. I was on the fence and went this route hoping it would be a install and forget solution. These are stiffer and not adjustable for load leveling which creates a rough driving experience with my rig. On my next truck I'll be installing airbags.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

I Ordered this set for my F350 and the package arrived on Saturday afternoon. I went to the mail box to find the timbren box to be empty and resealed. I got on the phone and called etrailer and spoke with Lori who took my information and asked for a few photos of the package. She assured me not to worry another one would be on its way. That Monday was A holiday with no mail and by lunch on Tuesday I had received my package from them. This day in age it’s hard to talk to a real person when you have a issue but to get a live person on a Saturday afternoon who actually cares and follows through is unheard of. I have ordered a few products from etrailer and I would recommend them to anyone. They list the shipping process start to finish leaving no questions asked. Thanks again for being a great company.

by:

Great product, has held up well. If you are looking for a smooth ride when the vehicle is unloaded, this is probably not your best choice, but works great when the truck is loaded with my camper.

Service was awesome and fast! I put them in my F350! Not being very good at mechanics I was still able to put them in myself! I haul large loads of wood and our camper. We have had great results with this product!!

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

  • Helper Springs for a 2004 Ford F-350 Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer
For your 2004 Ford F-350 I recommend the stock shocks and then using suspension enhancement (helper springs) for support and to increase the life of the factory suspension. If you just got different shocks they could still get fatigued over time and you would be back to replacing them. But helper springs are not going to wear out like that. Even if you decide to go with upgraded shocks I still recommend adding helper springs to protect that investment. For example you could use Timbren...

Since the air spring kits that fit your 2003 Ford F-350 fit above the leaf springs the Timbren kit part # TFR350SDE would fit with them since they sit to the inside of this area on the axle. • Are There Air Bags for a 1997 Ford F-350 with In-Bed Hitch
I do have suspension enhancement options for a 1997 Ford F-350 but air bags won't be one of them as they all mount in the same spot as the in-bed hitch. That said, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR350SDE will work with an in-bed hitch and they provide more support than air bags. They also require zero maintenance.

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2000 Ford F-350 2-Wheel Drive Dually
Jounce style helper springs won't automatically give your truck a rough ride. This is because they get progressively stiffer the more they are compressed. I recommend Timbren springs # TFR350SDE. They work well and have a limited lifetime warranty. Plus they are compatible with trucks that have a 5th wheel hitch installed and work independently side to side. No maintenance is required and you won't have to add and remove air all the time. I have linked a help article on Timbren springs for you.

You will still be limited to the weight capacity that Ford has set for your truck. Beyond a difference in spacer height, these kits are identical, so I've included an installation of part # TFR350SDF on a 2013 Ford F-350 that does have that uncommon setup. This should help you get an idea of how this kit installs onto your vehicle.
