Video Transcript for Kuat Bike Racks Hitch Lock Review

Hi everyone, Aiden here at etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Kuat Locking Hitch Pin for your inch and a quarter bike racks. This is going to be a replacement locking pin for your bike racks on inch and a quarter hitches. You can see here this is the standard pin that comes with some of their bike racks that we'd be replacing, and the new one is just going to be a locking pin, same diameter pin just with a lock core on the other end. Let's check it out. So I'll talk about the lock a little bit more out here before we put it on because it's gonna be hard to see down there.

But overall, the function of this lock is really nice. It's got a cap on the top here to just keep the locking core all protected. It snaps into place and it fits pretty firmly. The lock itself is very smooth to insert and turn to disengage, pops right off. And the nice thing about this that I always look for in a lock is if it's a push to lock.

So I can just push it in place, I'll hear it click, and then it's locked in. So I don't have to worry about keeping the key inserted, holding it in place, and then turning it to lock it whenever I'm all under my car. One thing I will say about this is that the fitting point here is a little bit loose just because this is a very small pin. But I have messed with this quite a bit off-camera and really tried to find if there's a weak point here, and I haven't found any point where it feels like it's going to pop loose. Despite that movement in there, it feels like the pin is held in place very securely, so I'm not too concerned about that.

The other nice thing I like about it is the fact that the locking core here is on the side. So when the pin is through, the locking core is going to face us, rather than being out to the side like this. That just helps with getting access to it when it's under our vehicle. And if you have a hitch that's really far-recessed or maybe has some other clearance issues, then you don't have to worry about it as much interfering with things because it doesn't stick out as far. Underneath, we can pass the pin through the hitch pin hole, pop that lock core on the other side, it's already locked in place.

And then at this point, you can tighten up your bike rack and get it all secured. And that's really all there is to it. Overall, it's a locking pin. It says what it's gonna do. And I think at the end of the day, it's going to be a big upgrade over the standard pinning clip that comes with your bike rack, and it's gonna be a lot more secure. When it comes to locking pins, there's not really much to look for besides a nice secure fit and ease of use, and I think Kuat really did a good job with this one. It's easy to use, it's got a secure fit, and I'm not worried about it when I'm leaving my bike rack on my vehicle. Thanks for watching.

High quality heavy duty hitch pin lock. The incorrect one was shipped, and when I called, they immediately sent out the correct one.

A year later, the hitch lock continues working great!

by:

It's a very basic lock, very thin and probably very susceptible to attack. I run a cable from bikes to car frame so people won't try to steal all bikes and racks. However, it is the only lock that fits the scenario where I have the Kuat rack adapted to a 1.25" hitch. The Kuat adapter for 1.25 only supports this very thin lock. It's a deterrent and has worked alright as such. I also got a key match to the lock that I have on my 2" hitch lock and love the fact that I could use one key for both, the 1.25 lock and the 2" lock. So I'm kinda happy, but still think this thin lock is not sufficient by itself to prevent people from breaking it and taking your valuable rack and bikes.

by:

As an older senior single I'm glad I bought this, easy to put on. I tried the cotter pin, right out of the package on the hitch pin and it was just too difficult. I would have had a heck of a time using a cotter pin with the hitch pin installed in the hitch.

by:

The lock & pin are heavy duty & fairly easy to use.

by:

eTrailer is fantastic! Very helpful product reviews and terrific service. Orders arrive on time.

by:

Perfect fit for my Kuat Transfer V2 rack. I was pleasantly surprised to open the eTrailer shipping box and find the hitch lock in an original Kuat burlap sack. Thank you eTrailer.

by:

Look, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it. However this lock, along with the mechanical device built into the kuat rack to tighten it in the hitch by use of a unique wrench, it just got a lot more difficult for them. It looks good and the lock mechanism looks robust for it's size. It's not as thick as your hitch pin for your full sized trailer you tow, but it's sufficient enough to provide another layer of protection for the bike rack.

by:

Prompt service. Easy order on website.

by:

This locking hutch pin works perfect. Not the problems with that you have with others. However, I have to have 2 locking pins for this Kuat hitch for the Venza. That is over $50. The hitch requires smaller pin than receiver takes for receiver cover to lock it on. That is due to this single side transfer bike rack adapting. This needs to be resolved, so customers do not have $75 -$100 in rack, and receiver covers for this rack.

by:

1 year later, we are very pleased with this purchase. I couldn’t find a hitch this small at any stores near me and I love that this locks for my bike trailer (Thule).

by:

I bought this lock as a replacement for the original after I lost the key and had to cut it free from my vehicle. Everything arrived as advertised and has worked flawlessly for over a year. The pin is the right size for the hole on my Kuat Sherpa rack.

by:

This is a must have for added security and peace of mind.

by:

Arrived faster than expected, which is good because I wanted to secure my bike rack that I just bought. Also the best part is I can use the lock on the threaded pin that came with my bike rack so its more stable. Highly recommend

by:

fast and the best price on this

by:

I needed the lock for the 2” hitch pin which wouldn’t be available for 4 months. The lock from this fits right on the pin that came with the transfer 3 rack.

by:

Shipped out fast

by:

Makes me feel more secure...great customer service at etrailer!

by:

I like the fact that the protective key cap is now attached to the lock. I lost a cap of your earlier version that had to be removed completely to access key hole.

by:

This lock worked fine with the rack.

by:

Awesome its all about customer support. etrailer is #1

  • Mounting Hardware Size and How to Lock Trailer Tipper Latch # DL13353
I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Trailer Tipper Latch # DL13353. The bolt holes on the bottom take a 3/8 inch diameter bolt. For locking you will actually need to use a locking pin or pad lock with a 5/16 inch diameter. When in the locked position install the lock and the latch will not be able to open. We have a Kuat bike rack lock, # HL1, that happens to be 5/16 inch diameter.

  • Recommended Bike Rack Compatible With a 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon With OEM Hitch Receiver
I do have a solution for you, but from the research that I have done it looks like the OEM 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver that you have on your 2017 Subaru Outback is a Class I hitch; you can look on it to confirm if it is a Class I or not. In that case, my contact at Softride said that none of their bike racks are compatible with Class I receivers. This means that the Dura Parallelogram SR26247 (discontinued) is not compatible with your current receiver. Since you can only carry a...

  • Fit of Kuat Beta Bike Rack # B202-114 in Class I Receiver on 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback
The Kuat Beta bike rack you mentioned should work very well with the Draw-Tite # 24872 Class I receiver on your Focus. To confirm this, measure rearward from the hitch pin hole in the receiver to the furthest rearward point of the bumper. If this distance is less than 10-1/2 inches (which it should be), the rack will fit your vehicle. Kuat makes a great product, I am confident you will be very happy with the rack. I would also recommend a locking hitch pin, part # HL1 to secure the rack...

  • Bike Rack Needed for a 2018 Honda Fit with Plastic Spoiler
I do have a solution for you to use a 2-bike bike rack with your 2018 Honda Fit, but since the spoiler is plastic none of the trunk mount options are going to be compatible. The all use straps that would go over the spoiler and could very likely damage it. Instead what you need to do is install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mounted bike rack. Although this is different than what you are wanting the perks of using this system include not having any bike or bike rack contact with your...

  • Differences Between Kuat Beta and Thule Roadway for 2010 Mazda 5 with Class I Receiver
The main difference between the two racks is the weight differential, as you mentioned. The Kuat # B202-114 Beta bike rack has a slightly higher weight capacity, 80 lbs versus the 70 lb capacity of the Thule Roadway. Both racks have anti-wobble systems, the Thule rack uses a threaded hitch pin that snugs the shank of the rack tightly against the side of the receiver, while the Kuat rack uses a standard hitch pin, along with a knob that is used to tighten the rack/receiver connection.
