Fit of Kuat Beta Bike Rack # B202-114 in Class I Receiver on 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback

Question:

Have Draw-Tite # 24872 ordered from etrailer mounted on 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback. Is Kuat Beta #B202-114 a good choice? One of the bikes is womans step-through model. The light weight and high quality of Kuat rack seems like an advantage. Would wheel-mount, platform style rack be better choice than hanging style rack for this application?

The Kuat Beta bike rack you mentioned should work very well with the Draw-Tite # 24872 Class I receiver on your Focus. To confirm this, measure rearward from the hitch pin hole in the receiver to the furthest rearward point of the bumper. If this distance is less than 10-1/2 inches (which it should be), the rack will fit your vehicle.

Kuat makes a great product, I am confident you will be very happy with the rack. I would also recommend a locking hitch pin, part # HL1 to secure the rack to the vehicle.

To carry women's bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike has greater ground clearance and is not carried at an angle.

Take a look at the Kuat Sherpa, part # SH12G. The Sherpa will hold the bikes by the wheels, and would eliminate the need for the frame adapter recommended for carrying womens bikes on hanging style bike racks. The folding mechanism on the Sherpa also raises the deck of the carrier about 3-1/2 inches, providing superior ground clearance. If your hitch pin hole to bumper measurement is less than 8-inches, the rack can be folded up flat against the rear of the vehicle for storage. The rack can also be folded rearward, which will allow access to the rear hatch or trunk on most vehicles. The Sherpa includes a cable and hitch lock.

Many folks prefer the platform style racks, as loading the bikes is much easier. Set the bike in the wheel trays, lower the ratcheting hook over the front tire where it meets the top tube, and secure one strap on the wheel tray. The bike is then loaded and you are ready to go.
