Installation of Universal Hayes Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Hayes brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

This is my second order with etrailer. Both experiences with your company have been very positive. The knowledge and friendliness -along with following up on orders and satisfaction have been much appreciated. Brittany, the customer representative, is a huge asset to etrailer.

by:

25 minutes after placing my online order with etrailer I got a phone call from a representative, ensuring that all of my order was correct was in stock and was being packaged for shipment. I had all of the parts that I ordered three days later, and a verification email that it was delivered. etrailer Runs their business. The way every business should be run. They take care of their customers from beginning to end and today, one year after the purchase. I got an email from them to find out how things were going. Six stars.

by:

High quality wire harness. I had to order parts from VW to make a pigtail to connect to the factory harness. All this and the part numbers were supplied with the instructions through etrailer.

by:

Exactly what I ordered, helped keep the wiring under the dash organized, delivery of product prompt, all good!!

Wiring is NOT conventional..
None of
the harness wires matched up to the flat 4 wiring.
Red was yellow green was brown etc.
And wiring or color ceding was included with the 7 pin harness

It's a plug and 4 wires. I haven't installed it yet but most likely it will work. It would have been nice if they had the vehicle-specific cable for their brake controller but then maybe my vehicle doesn't have a receptacle (2006 Jeep Commander). Not sure yet, haven't got that far, don't know when I will. I wanted to do it yesterday but it's been cold and rainy here and I don't have room in my garage to work so I've been working on the Jeep in the driveway. I got the trailer hitch mounted the other day and now I'm working on the wiring for the trailer plug. I put the Jeep up on 4 ramps to give me room to get under it and run wiring. At 275 pounds I need the extra space. When the rain stops and the wind dies down I will make an attempt to install this device, but I got this email first asking me for a review and an opinion. I don't really have an opinion yet and I can only write a review of what I know so far, which is very little. The instructions that came with it are quite simple. They tell you to plug it in and then read the instructions that came with the controller that you plugged it into. I was hoping for something more specific, like where should I look for the signal from the brake pedal to the stop lamps. I guess I'll start at the pedal and look for a place to tie in. Maybe YouTube has a video demonstrating the installation procedure for the controller using this Wiring Adapter. That would be nice too. The price for the item was fair, as was the shipping cost and delivery time. No complaints with any of that. I'd share a picture of the product but actually there's one on the page where it is advertised, the page from which I ordered it. I'm not sure why they want me to "share a picture of my product". As for the problem that it solved for me... I didn't have one. It solved that problem. Now I have one.

Thank you for your review. There is not a port to plug a brake controller adapter into on the 2006 Jeep Commander. If the 2006 Jeep Commander has a factory towing package the wires for a 7-way will be ran to the front of the Jeep. You will then use the hardwire adapter part # HA81789-HBC to splice into those wires. You will also need part # 5506 to complete the wiring to the battery. If the 2006 Jeep Commander does not have a factory towing package it requires the 7-way plug to be hardwired. In this case an wiring kit part # ETBC7 is needed. The ETBC7 comes with the all of the necessary wiring to wire in the plug and the brake controller. If the vehicle does not have a factory towing package you may also need a 4-way flat connector if you do not already have one. The 4-way connector is part # 118408 for the 2006 Jeep Commander without towing package. I have attached a video of installing a brake controller on a 2010 Jeep Commander with factory wires ran and a help article for the ETBC7 installation.

Product arrived in good condition packaged very well as always great service and quick response. Will be buying from E-trailer again.
Was able to find a replacement connector for my Hayes brake controller.
Thank you keep up the good service.

by:

Made the installation a breeze and allows for the plug and play of the controller when I need it as opposed to the permanent installation of a brake controller in my other pickup.

by:

It took a while to figure out which wire to tap into for the brake signal, but we eventually figured it out. It takes some awkward body positioning to locate the wires above the brake pedal.

by:

etrailer.com delivered as promised. Fast friendly service. Product arrived quickly as was exactley what I needed. The how to video was spot on.
Thanks,
Dave W.

by:

Fast service - great product. I have yet to tow with it.

by:

Handy wiring set up for easy instillati on.

by:

Installing was easy, works great.

by:

Works great with the Hayes brake controller. Makes older vehicle installation a breeze.

by:

This product makes installing the brake controller so much easier, because I use this unit with multiple tow units it is nice to be able to unplug and move to the other vehicle.

by:

Makes installing trailer brake controller super simple. Great product.

by:

The pig tail was easy to hook up. I was replacing a faulty unit so all the wires were handy. I did not want to do a hard wire in, this made it easy.

by:

Just traded car in for new one. Much easier to leave old cars wiring alone and add new plug to replacement car.

  • How Does Brake Controller Install in 2018 Chevy Colorado
Your 2018 Chevy Colorado has the brake controller wiring ran under the dash of the truck but there isn't an adapter that uses a connector. Reason being there's only 4 blunt cut wires under your vehicle dash for the brake controller wiring and not a connector of any type. To install the Hayes controller part # HA81760 you need the Hayes universal connector part # HA81789-HBC to run to those wires. I attached an install video that shows a similar brake controller installed in a 2018 Chevy...

  • Will Hayes Sincronizer Trailer Brake Controller Fit on a Honda Goldwing Motorcycle
Yes, the Hayes Syncronizer Trailer Brake Controller # HA81725 is a good choice with your Honda Goldwing. A time delayed controller is a better choice on a motorcycle because of the limited space for installation. A proportional controller has more limitations as to how they can be mounted which will be an issue on a bike. Also, the leaning of a motorcycle while turning will tilt the controller and a proportional controller cannot function this way. To connect the controller to the bike's...

The 2000 Chevy 1 ton and cab/chassis models weren't prewired for a brake controller until the 2001 model year, so you'd need to hardwire in the controller for that vehicle.
