Recommended Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Electric Brake Controller # 90195 for 2009 Chevy Silverado

Question:

I have a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 that I bought used with a Hayes Genesis brake controller already intalled. I recently bought a travel trailer and cannot get this brake controller to operate correctly ... Im thinking it may be defective as it did have some duct tape wrapping ???. Anyway Im wanting to purchase a new Tekonsha P3 and am wanting to know whats needed to connect it. Id like to use the same connector that the Genesis is now plugged into. The connection looks factory installed, but Im having no luck in verifying this ... or whether it was wired specifically for the Genesis professionally. Id like to keep the Genesis and its wiring connector intact in case I need to backtrack or possibly use it in another vehicle if it checks out to be OK. So, my question is: How can I get the P3 connected to the current connector?

For your 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 the duct tape is definitely a warning sign that things may not be installed correctly. The Hayes Genesis controller # HA81790 has a connection that is not the same as the Tekonsha controllers. The pigtail # HA81789-HBC was hardwired to give you the appearance of a factory connection as that truck model in 2009 had the wiring present under the dash but without a connector.

My recommendation is to hardwire the Tekonsha harness in a similar way. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 will come with a harness like # 20127 so you can simply match color to color with your current harness when you replace it. The Prodigy P3 will be a substantial upgrade in function and control from the Hayes Genesis brake controller. I've attached a video to assist.

Even though there isn't an adapter for your Hayes harness to the Tekonsha harness, there won't be any issue with you using that harness and controller at another time or in another vehicle if the checks out okay. I've attached an article to help you with testing.
