The Hayes Blackbird Trailer Brake Controller HA81726 is absolutely something you can install yourself and won't look out of place in your 2008 Lincoln Mark LT. If you have a factory 7-way, then you only need to add the custom wiring harness # HA81783-HBC to plug into your factory port beneath the dash. If you have the factory 4-way, then you can use that harness along with the # ETBC7.
If you don't have factory wiring, you will need the Universal Wiring Adapter for Hayes Trailer Brake Controllers # HA81789-HBC to plug into this controller and give you the connections for wiring to your vehicle. Then you can use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7 which comes with all the parts like circuit breakers, connectors, and wiring to install a functional 7-way and connect your brake controller. This does require a 4-way flat trailer connector to start with.
If you don't have that 4-way flat trailer connector, then I recommend the Tekonsha 4-way with circuit tester and quick splice connections # 18252.
