Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

Galvanized steel parts are great for marine use because they are hot-dipped in zinc after being stamped. This creates a coating that is typically 3 mil to 5 mil thick. This thick, all-around coating allows galvanized steel products to provide years of use without rusting or corroding, making them a good choice for boat and snowmobile trailers.

All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater

Axle Dimensions

HubAndSpringLengths

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring centering hole on one side of the axle to the spring centering hole on the other.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great product. I bought the harbor freight trailer last year and within a couple of weeks I had problems with one of the Hubs. The bearings went bad and the made in China hub had a crack in it. Could not find an exact replacement and tried a bunch of trailer stores around the Chicagoland area. Then a few months later the other hub started to wobble when I got home and replaced it also with a close match but not perfect. Every since then the camber was off and I didn't feel safe driving on the highway. After a year of looking I finally found this website and they had the Hubs and axle to replace the bad quality of the made in China original one that came with the harbor freight trailer. Took a couple of easy hours to replace and I couldn't be any more happier. Drove it on the highway for 50 miles and everything is still nice and tight so far and it looks way better too. Plus, the easy lube system is the best part! George kept in contact with me from the beginning to the end letting me know that it shipped and that it arrived at my house. 2 days to get to my house! I will be back to purchase more things in the future!

Still going strong with no issues what so ever. Best part is the yearly greasing of the hubs. Take the cap off and grease up until all the old grease comes out! Money well spent!

It’s a great looking axle. This is perfect fit for the trailer I purchased from the discount hardware store. Straight forward to install. It was a pleasure working with everyone at etrailer. Couldn’t be happier. i have just one outstanding question. My old axle was round 1 3/4”. Are most people reusing old bracket (which I decided to do) or buying square bracket and if so what size? i have included some pictures of trailer and also some closeups of bracket holding axle to spring.
Once again a pleasure doing business with etrailer.

Since you now have an axle with a square tube, you really should use a U-bolt kit that features square U-bolts like CE23102.

I have used this axle for about a year now and made several trips of 300 to 400 miles round-trip. I have had no problems at all and the trailer pulls well. I used this axle and hub assembly to upgrade the cheap axle that came on my Harbor Freight folding trailer. This axle was a direct fit and no modification were made to the trailer. I did pair this with 15-inch radial trailer tires, so I could not use the original fenders that were sized for 12-inch tires. I simply went to my local farm supply and grabbed a couple of fenders for 15-inch wheels and a couple of angle brackets from the local hardware store and I was back in action. I use this trailer to carry two Hobie Outback kayaks and fishing/camping gear behind my Subaru Outback.

by:

Not as described or shown in photos. These are not easy lube spindles. Took over 2 weeks for the wrong axle to arrive. All boxes were very damaged upon arrival and missing some parts.

This axle should definitely come with EZ lube spindles. I am sorry that the axle was incorrect and arrived damaged. Customer Service will be in contact with you.

I shopped locally for a new axle for my boat trailer but found exactly what I needed at e-trailer and at the best price anywhere. I was surprised at how quickly it arrived. When I found one of the parts was damaged in transit, I e-mailed the company and they got back to me almost immediately. I had the new part inside the week. I am very impressed with both the quality of the components and the level of customer service. I will definitely buy from them again.

by:

Fit in place just like the old one I replaced. Working well to this day.

by:

I have an 79 ski boat and trailer I'm restoring and the trailer axle was one of the last things I needed. The price was what I expected and shipping was very reasonable.I've never replaced an axle before so the product description and measuring instructions helped a novice like me get exactly the right one. The axle and hubs were easy to assemble and the "customer also bought" section on the website showed me the right mounting hardware. I haven't towed it yet but I expect no problems. I also bought the springs and custom hitch from etrailer and are very satisfied. I would recommend etrailer to anyone to get it right the first time.

Rolling good with no problems

by:

etrailer was temporarily out of stock and had to wait 3-4 weeks. I received a phone call from them after about 4 weeks when it looked like the ETA was getting close. They asked if I wanted the 3 day shipping refunded and whether or not I preferred to wait longer. Really great customer service. A week later it arrived.

This axle/hub setup is a perfect fit for the Haul Master Super Duty Folding Utility trailer from Harbor Freight ITEM#62671. Also purchased was item "Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D" Code AM30859 Tires/Wheels.

by:

Well built galvanized should last me a long time. Thank you

by:

Nice upgrade of the axle on my [online] trailer. I had no confidence towing my home made teardrop camper until I installed this axle. The package was damaged in shipping and eTrailer quickly replaced the missing parts.

by:

I bought a new Harbor Freight trailer and after assembly was unhappy with the quality of the axle and hubs. Because of all the time and effort put into assembly I did not want to try to return it, besides the frame of the trailer was great for the load I will be carrying. I just couldn't trust those hubs to go the distances I needed. The C.E. smith axle was just what I was looking for. It fit perfect took less than an hour to install and increased the load capacity. With the addition of the 5 on 4 1/2 hubs and galvanized wheels it looks great also. My only mistake was not knowing exactly what I was looking for and needing to cancel and re-order twice. All my fault. Be smart, take advantage of the superior customer service and you will get it right the first time. once I got over the whole being a man and not asking for directions trip, Lisa D. took over and everything went perfect. She was very patient and kept me informed and up to date with emails and telephone calls. I will definitely use e-trailer again for any trailer needs I may encounter

by:

The axle and hub kit arrived on time, un-damaged and fit as advertised. Replaced old axle on my boat trailer. Installation was simple and went as planned. I love the ease of re-greasing with the grease in place hubs. They make routine maintenance simple. Have used for almost 1 year on my boat trailer with no issues!

by:

I had to replace the axle, hubs and leaf springs and wheels on my utility trailer and wasn't sure what I needed or how to measure for the right parts. The gal that helped me (sorry, can't remember your), was very patient and walked me through all of the steps to determine the correct part numbers for the application.

Every part was correct including the U-bolt kit and bolts for mounting the leaf springs. It all went together smoothly and the trailer is back on the road.

by:

The trailer that this axle went on has two cross country trips each one about 3,400 miles or more with at least a 1,000 lbs in the trailer each trip. It was so smooth that I often forgot the trailer was there. This axle was quick and easy to install and came with everything needed to complete the job. I have no regrets and I would get this again if I ever need one.

by:

The axle and hubs were received exceptionally fast for free shipping. The products are reasonably high quality for the price. I am still in the process of installing them but they are going together easily and quickly and will do exactly what I need them to do. (Mid summer is not the time for a boat trailer axle to collapse!) Great product. The only glitch, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the product, is that the two grease cups were crushed beyond use I assume during shipping. I would recommend this axle assembly to anyone.

by:

The replacement axle and hubs are excel lent!

Great!

by:

Everything fit perfectly for the axle/hubs/bearings upgrade to me 1,850 lb. 4X8 Harborur Frt. trailer. May have been a miscommunication but I thought it would arrive fully assembled and lubed. It all came in pieces for me to assemble and without instructions. But it all worked out ??..

by:

Exceeded my already high expectations. I live in rural Hawaii and my complete boat trailer axle down to tires was delivered within a week of order with reasonable shipping charges.. Local place gave me runaround 3x already. This saved me. Now I can go fishing again!

Dimensions and sizing can be difficult, even if you are used to these things but trailer makes it super ez.. With videos and detailed things. Thank you, I will definitely do business again!!!

by:

I received this product yesterday and had the trailer up and running in a short time. The only problem was the tube that the shaft came in had broken open during shipment and one of the cotter pins got lost in shipment. I went out and purchased the replacement. This axle was used to replace a damaged one that I have that used to belong to my step father. He and I used to work seven days a week on a sod farm until he became ill and passed away.

by:

e-trailer exceeds all expectations they are the number one for trailer parts and accessories and their customer relations are second to none

by:

If you have a bad axle and this axle fits this is the one to get it's rated for 1800 lb The galvanized hubs and axle looks really good and when I put it together it went together very nicely

by:

I was impressed by the friendly and helpful service I received. The the product I chose was based on my old axle which broke. It worked well under my one place snowmobile trailer and allowed the standard 8" wheels to fit well .

by:

The end caps are not tapered so when you install it is hard to not ruin. Also the threads on end of one side of spindle were a little bit bent, had to clean up with file. Other than this, it was a breeze to install and now my trailer sticks to the road like glue.

by:

Haven't installed the parts yet. Ordered what I thought was correct. Erika called me and pointed out I ordered the wrong U-bolts for the axle I selected. She even stayed on the phone while I went outside (with my cell phone on speaker) and measured all the dimensions of my broken axle. Received the parts today. Hoping to have it installed tomorrow.

by:

Fast shipping. Parts for perfectly. Wish it would've came with basic instructions for a novice like me but I just figured it out with YouTube.

This can vary by state but you might want to check whether you even need to install brakes for a trailer of the weight you are planning to build. For a complete 1800-lb beam axle...
