The entire experience with etrailer was smooth as can be. They sent me the exact hitch for my 20 year old Subaru within a few days of ordering, at a reasonable price, and I was able to quickly install it without a “hitch”

This is an excellent hitch for the Outback. I have towed several moving trailers and a lawnmower trailer regularly. The hitch didnt miss a beat. Also it seems to be resistant to corosion and has generally held up well. Great purchase.

This is a great hitch. No rust. It has been working good. Have had no issues. Definitely would recommend this to a friend.

by:

I've had this hitch for about a year now and it has given me zero problems. I've had a bike rack attached to it for about a year now too. The hitch handles the weight of the rack and a couple bikes with ease on long trips down highways and bumpy roads.

I was pretty confident in my ability to install my new hitch even before I started shopping. Once I found etrailer.com and checked out the install videos my confidence was certainly increased.

The hitch and wiring harness were packed well, very securely, and delivered on time. In fact, after placing my order I was emailed to say that it was able to be expedited so it would arrive on Friday rather than Monday. Score 1 for etrailer.com.

Set out Saturday morning to install and literally EVERYTHING went exactly as the video and instructions said they would and I managed to get it done in just under 45 minutes with very basic hand tools.

I would definitely do business with etrailer.com again and have already made many recommendations. Thanks!!

1999 Subaru Outback Wagon

My hitch and accessories arrived much faster than was originally quoted! Amazing service! The hitch fit was ok ( I have a 99 Outback Limited ), as I had to use some spacers to make it line up correctly. It lined up in the frame/ carriage bolt area just fine, but the area where it hangs down it was a little off and I had to use some elbow grease to make the bolts go through. Haven't hauled anything with it yet, but it looks great and I installed it by myself in a little over an hour. Overall great looking hitch ( looks stock ) and great customer service from etrailer!!!

by:

I ordered this hitch on a Saturday after pricing them all over. The ordering process was simple and the hitch arrived the following Wednesday afternoon.
This was so easy to put on that it amazed me. Literally 45 minutes after opening the box I was done and ready to tow my motorcycle trailer.
I am very happy with every aspect of this product, from ordering to ease of install. It was great. Thanks

1996 Subaru Legacy

I got the Curt hitch installed on my 1996 Subaru Legacy L, and everything looks good. Here's the photo you requested (Attached). Thanks!

by:
Subaru Legacy

Curt's fault, but the hitch was about 3/8" too narrow. Had to break out a sledgehammer and put spacers in different places to mount the hitch. Once I got it on there though, I am completely satisfied with it. It is getting the job done, but I would have concerns about putting the rated load on there. (2000/200 on the '93 Subaru Legacy)

As with other etrailer purchases, great value and the video explaining your item and how to install it makes it easy to decide to buy here! Great customer service too!

by:
1997 Subaru Legacy

Instructions were clear and I love how low profile it is. Almost unnoticeable when there no hitch in place.

by:

Was a poor fit for the vehicle. There had been no accidents, yet much retrofitting had to occur for a proper install. The quality was good, and there was no rusting. The amount of work to install with a number of appropriate tools was excessive. Would not buy again for this particular vehicle, a 2000 Subaru Outback limited sedan. We checked our order request, and there were no mistakes on our end. We install these routinely, and this was more difficult than the last one we did, which involved bumper removal and wiring. It was rated 10 of 10 in difficulty, and this one took longer: 4 hours.

2004 Subaru Outback Wagon

First off... I searched for a hitch for my 04 Subaru Outback wagon. I price compare just about everything and the pricing for this hitch is the same as or less than others. Ive purchased other things from etrailer and i never had an issue. What sold me was that this hitch mount had a video about how to mount it. it looked like i could handle it. I also priced compared the receiver, and the wiring kit. this was a no brainer to get everything i needed from etrailer. I ordered it on a Monday night and it was delivered Wed afternoon. You cant beat that. I mounted it up Wed afternoon and it fit perfect. The wiring harness kits instructions were wrong about where to look for the factory plug. It says look for the plug on the rear drivers side....it was on the rear passenger side. no biggee...but there was no place to route the plug/wire. So i drilled a hole located at the spare tire center back and installed grommets and a wire loom for the harness. i had to cut the 4 wires to back feed so i just soldered and taped up the splice. After all is said and done this is the perfect hitch and wiring. I highly recommend anything from the etrailer.

1991 Subaru Legacy

An excellent hitch, stronger than hell! and excellently painted. There were minor deviations in the dimensions but who could expect an add-on to exactly fit a 26 year old car? I particularly liked the very clever fishing device to insert the bolts into the box sections of the frame. I think I would raise the difficulty level a bit as I had to use some considerable force using a jack to get the unit to match up to the manufacturer's shipping tie-down loops on the car. I suspect that is not an important dimension in making a car. Overall amazing just to be able to get a hitch that fits so well and great price.

Sure your hitch is working just fine. Absolutely no problems. Still amazed that one can get a hitch to fit on a 27 year old car with only minimal dimensional problems! Cheers

Great product - easy to install (helps to have two people and an impact wrench) - only took us half an hour or so.
In retrospect, we did not see why there was a need to lower the exhaust to do this install - we did it, but it seemed to serve no purpose.
The drawbar - I probably won't ever use the one supplied - the 3/4" rise is not nearly enough for most attachments - I put a 3" riser on it and it matches up much better with my log splitter, trailer, etc.
Also, given that the mounting (on an Outback) is so far in, you may find that safety chains on your attachments need to be extended to reach the holes on the receiver.

The hitch is still on my 2004 Subaru Outback and I have had no issues with it.Am pulling a 900 lb trailer mostly to haul firewood.I would still recommend including a drawbar with a 3 rise instead of the 34 that you now include with the hitch, as the Outback ground clearance is not high enough to make the 3/4 rise useful.

2004 Subaru Outback Wagon

This is the second hitch I have purchased through etrailer and both were excellent. It arrived within a week of ordering. Big O Tires was able to install it and the wiring kit in under an hour thanks to the videos on etrailer's site. I priced hitches locally and they couldn't touch etrailer's prices. A great experience. I'd send a picture of my Subaru Outback but it looks exactly like the sample picture on the web site.

2001 Subaru Outback Wagon

My experience with etrailer: this website is very easy to use; the folks who emailed me about tracking updates and asking if I had any questions were super friendly. The shipping speed and packaging were excellent; the price was very competitive.

My experience with this Curt Hitch: the quality of materials was high, this is a sleek and heavy duty design which will make for easy light-duty towing with my 2001 Subaru Outback wagon.

THAT SAID: the hitch was not wide enough to actually reach both of the tow hook points. The included bolt was too short, and the hitch came with insufficient spacers to fill the gap. I was able to get a longer bolt and also several hardened washers as additional spacers, which should be fine to use (as the hitch is bolted down with 110 ft-lbs of torque at 3 other places on the frame, as well), but it was disappointing that the otherwise well-designed hitch wasn't an exact fit for the car.

by:
2003 Subaru Outback Wagon

Product arrived in a timely manner- I chose not to do the install myself because the car was going up on the lift anyway for other work. Mechanic noted no issues during install.

I was warned that there might be interference with the muffler on my 2003 Outback wagon, and there was- in sharp right turns, the muffler would swing in its mounts and hit the hitch, and make a racket. Took it to the muffler shop, they put it on the lift and "adjusted" the muffler body with a heavy mallet, no problem since.

Looks good, works good, pulls a small trailer well. Would buy again, but be aware of the muffler issue.

2002 Subaru Outback Wagon

This is the second Curt hitch I have purchased from etrailer for my family's Subaru's and it is great quality. Price is unbeatable, and shipping and customer service is top notch. I installed it on my 2002 LL Bean Outback H6. There were a few small snags that I will detail here, but overall installation was quick and easy by myself. As was detailed in another review, you have to remove the charcoal canister mount bracket after you unbolt the canister itself. I slipped the two exhaust hangers off easily and both carriage bolts and plates slid in easily with the included fish wire, a brilliant idea by the way. The snags I ran in to were on the right side, the distance between the tie down point and the receiver was much greater that the thickness of the two included spacers, so I just sandwiched in about 5 or 6 1/2" stainless washers, in addition to the spacers, and I also used stainless fender washers that were ground down to fit the contour of the tie down, behind the nuts because the tie down holes were large enough for the nut to drop in to. Do yourself a favor and buy around 8 1/2" washers before you begin and your install will go a lot smoother. It may be that the H6 model is different, but I think the slop in tolerances probably has more to do with the year range that this hitch covers. I can't wait to start towing with my new car!

by:

Did not need to lower the exhaust as was described in the directions.
Did, however, need to lower the gas canister. This was not described in the directions.
The directions for the wiring said to look on the left side of the trunk/hatch.
After 30 minutes of not finding anything remotely like the needed connector, I went to the right side and found it within 1 minute.
The hitch and wiring seem to be good quality and a good value.
The directions were frustrating. Overall, the quality of the product outweighed the poor quality of instructions. I would definitely purchase another trailer hitch kit from etrailer.

Great looking hitch! Went to install last night and could not find any mounting hardware in package. Guess I have to purchase it on my own?

I got this hitch to install on a 2002 Subaru Outback to pull a J16 Carolina Skiff as well as hold a bike rack for 2 bikes when traveling. This hitch was easy to install and I have had no issues at all with pulling the boat or holding my mountain bikes. I love the quality of this hitch and don't anticipate any issues in the future.

Fit just right. Getting the square notched plates were a bit of a trick to do but overall didn't take to long and is a very strong install.
