Installing a Trailer Hitch on a 1993 Subaru Legacy

Question:

if Im reading the instructions right the only tool I would need to install on a 1993 Subaru Legacy sedan is a 1/2 inch wrench? I ask as Im in a rather remote area without any tools. Also do I have to lift the vehicle to install or can I lie on the ground. Thanks in advance.

You will at the very least need a 1/2 inch wrench and a torque wrench that is good for 110 foot pounds. It is important to get the bolts to the proper torque rating. If they are too loose you could lose the hitch. Too tight and you could damage the hitch or your 1993 Subaru Legacy.

Most auto parts stores can loan out any tools you might need.

You should not have to have the car on a lift to install it. lying on the ground would likely be fine. Some people who want more space would jack up the car and put it on jack stands. It isn't always necessary to do this, it is more like personal preference. If it were me, I would like a little more space to work with but you could install it without lifting the vehicle at all.

If you plan on doing some towing the correct ball mount is # C45519. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # C40001. For a 2 inch ball use # C40018. And for trailer wiring use # C59496.
