Video Transcript for Using a 1/2 inch Bolt Leader FAQ

All right today, we're going to demonstrate part number 80101-1. This is a half inch bolt leader. Now this part is typically used to install carriage bolts and blocks inside the frame of the vehicle for attachment points for a hitch. We got our hardware here, a typical half inch carriage bolt and a block. We'll go ahead and put those together and then take a bolt leader, also known as a wire pull and put everything together. Now this is the access hole we're going to use, so we'll go ahead and actually take it apart, To thread our bolt through, typically you go head first and then slide the block in. Then we pull everything back through the same hole and that's called a reverse pull. Now the next technique that we show you will be the regular fish wiring a bolt.

Now this is really common. Basically what would happen is this would be our access hole and we'd run this through a hole further up in the frame. In this case, we're going to use these two right close to each other for demonstration purposes. What we'll do is actually take our bolt leader, go through the hole that we want to use, back through our access hole. Then we'll take a block, which typically used, we'll push it in the frame, I like to keep it typically separate, so it can move around independently of the bolt. Plus if there are any obstacles in the way inside the frame, it kind of helps work the wiring.

Then we'll go ahead and take our bolt and put it onto the bolt leader, flip it around again, push it in head first. In certain situations, you may have to work it around like that, just rattle it to get it to work through and then back through the hole you're going to use. There you have it for part number 80101-1.

by:

Couteous and friendly gentleman to help me order a small but necessary part for my trailer hitch. Shipped fast and excellent service!!

by:

100% satisfied

by:

I got my original trailer hitch for my 2011 Subaru Outback from Etrailer and they were great with support and the product worked flawlessly for years. I got a new 2016 Subaru Outback and fortunately the same trailer hitch would fit. BUT, I didn't have the 7/16" bolt leader CRITICAL for the install. I called etrailer and they had one on the way and I received it 2 days later. It cost me like a couple of dollars including shipping, but I couldn't get it anywhere else. This product is used to fish the bolt through the holes in the frame of your car so that you can attach the trailer hitch to the frame. They also sent me a video of how to do it. So these guys are great, they're their for you when you buy your stuff, and there for you when you need em years later.

Great hitch, great company to do biz with. Trailer hitch is indestructible. Works great, no rust, Ive kept the hitch housing lubed when I dont have the ball and hitch in there and the thing looks like new!! IF this ever wears out or IF I get a vehicle that doesnt use this size hitch, I will definitely buy my next one from these guys!! Good product and great customer service!!

This item was ordered at approximately the same time the hitch kit and drawbar were purchased. I found this item to be of excellent quality and certainly fulfilled the purchase for which it was purchased. It enabled the "snaking" of the large bolts through the drilled holes in the vehicle's frame and the job would certainly have been quite a bit more difficult without this tool. I give it excellent marks and that goes as well for the other items I purchased. Excellent kudos also go to the staff of e-trailer who were courteous with great knowledge and my experience was totally satisfactory.

by:

Hitch fit great! Only took us about 45 min to install. Directions were very clear. It is a low profile hitch though, so you'll need a longer ball mount.

I use the hitch for a Yakima bike rack and a cargo carrier.

A bit of advice: get the bolt leader! It's only 89 cents and will save you a ton of time. And use an air wrench if you can.

by:

This is what I needed for my trailer installation. The coils were a perfect fit on the 17mm bolts for my hitch. The original fish that came with my trailer was too tight for the bolts and acted like a Chinese finger trap when I tried to unthread it from the bolt. It was very agrivating, it would bind from the tension and the coils would start to warp when I would pull and pry just to get it if the bolts so that made it useless after the second bolt I fished through. I called up eTrailer and they helped get the right size fish over to me and I didn't have any issues after that.

Having recently installed a hitch on my passenger car, I find the need to sell my car but wanted to reinstall it on my replacement. Problem was that the mechanic who installed my hitch lost the bolt leader from the original install, which would make the new install difficult. Lucky for me I was able to purchase this invaluable tool at a reasonable price and can happily reinstall my new hitch on my new car. etrailer was a life saver in providing me this item "without a hitch!" Thanks

by:

Installed on a 2001 Mustang Convertible (base). Took about an hour, very easy. Hooked it up to a 4' x 8' u-haul and relocated from North Carolina to Colorado. Only used it that once, but had no problems whatsoever. (Pro-tip: U-haul wont rent trailers to you if you have a canvas top or convertible. had to borrow a friend's truck)

by:

The Fish Wire Bolt Leader made putting my trailer hitch on much simpler than it would have been without it. I highly recommend this product. I sent back and bought other sizes in case I need them for similar jobs. This is too handy of a tool not to have.

by:

I had an entire toolbox full of bolts without leadership. Chaos ruled the tool crib and the shop was divided into Waring factions. All hope had been abandoned. Then I discovered etrailer.com and their bolt leader. From the moment it arrived, their bolt leaded seized command, took control and brought order to the chaos. My shop is now a profitable nation. Thanks etrailer.com!

by:

I have never used these before and without them it would have been seriously challenging to feed the carriage bolts into the frame, the spacers into the carriage bolts then pull them back through the frame and hold them in place while I positioned the hitch over the bolts. It was really easy with pull wires.

by:

I never knew there was such a tool as this until I started to install my Torklift camper tie downs. I could never have done it without these.

by:

You can't do the job without this. But it's so easy with it. Beats me why Reese don't list this among their "Tools Required." They DO, however, refer to the "fishwire technique" in there install instructions, which is all a bit mysterious to a first-timer.

Got it in a hurry. Very pleased with e-trailer's service!

by:

If you do any kind of bumper , pushbar, forerunner bar, towhitch installs, these are for you.
Neighbor came over after spending 3 hours on a push bar install asking for help after getting absolutely nowhere.
Asked if he had bolt leaders, he had no clue what I was talking about.
Was done with entire install in less than an hour.
Told him, you need these.

by:

These leader wires are good, high quality items. Very useful for pulling bolts through car frames for installing hitches and many other items. Fast shipping from etrailer too!

by:

It worked great. . without it , would have been impossible to insert a bolt into the frame of the Subaru for hitch installation.

by:

Essential for installing the hitch. You must have this. If you don't... you won't be installing the hitch. I tried to use string and tape. It did not work.

by:

shipping was quick and the product was what I needed to help with a Jeep XJ hitch install.

by:

This bolt leader should be included in every hitch order. It could have been a couple of inches longer for my installation though. The bolt leader saved me a lot more time than the low cost of the leader/fish wire.

by:

Did the job nicely

by:

These were perfect for installing bolts in hard to reach areas! We recently designed a new application for our product and engineering needed to find out a way to retrofit current units, these will be a lifesaver!

by:

Nice pull wire

by:

Good tool, makes installation easy. One receiver I bought contained these with the included hardware, the other did not so I do not know if they are supposed to be included or not.

by:

Could not install my hitch receiver without this bolt leader.

by:

Product was exactly what I needed. The customer service was awesome! I called them and gave them a crazy description of what I needed and the lady knew what I was talking about and had it pulled up for me in minutes.

Yes the fishwires are included with Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75234 for your 2016 Ford Edge. And should you need any additional ones for any reason they are available separately as well. The overall length on the Hidden Hitch 7/16-inch Bolt Leader, part # 80103-1, is 24 inches. The fishwire is a very thin, flexible wire that can be twisted or bent into different positions. I am including a link to a video that will show how to use a fishwire when installing the # 75118 hitch on a 2004 Mazda Tribute. The Mazda Tribute is the same vehicle as the Ford Escape. • How is a Bolt Attached to the Fishwire?
You would need wire that is flexible enough to wrap around the bolt threads without coming loose. Annealed Stove wire works great. We also offer the fish wire in either 7/16 or 1/2 inch size. The part # for the 7/16 size is 80103-1. The part # for the 1/2 inch size is 80101-1. The bolt would actually thread into the fish wire.

  • What Size Fish Wire Comes with the Curt Hitch C11496
The Curt Hitch part # C11496 that you referenced comes with a bolt leader/fish wire to use for installing the hardware of the hitch so you would not need to source one separately. The carriage bolts that come with this hitch are 7/16-14 X 1.50 GR5. If you wanted to order a replacement bolt leader or a spare you would need part # 80103-1. Your dual exhaust would not be a fit issue at all.

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier for a 2000 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
You will not be able to install a roof rack on a 2000 Ford Mustang GT convertible. The soft top prohibits installation of any kind of roof rack. For trailer hitches, Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch are owned by the same company and the hitches even share the same instructions. If you will not be towing anything then the Draw-Tite hitch # 24687 would be the way to go. This is because the Hidden Hitch model comes with a ball mount which you will not need if you are not towing. For installation...
