Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - APT7 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the tandem-axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs. This leaf spring mounting kit includes your equalizers, your front, center and rear hangers as well as necessary hardware for the installation. Now, components for mounting the axle to the springs are sold separately. This kit is designed for use on trailers with tandem 2,000-pound to 7,000-pound axles. This kit would be great for building a new trailer, rebuilding an old trailer, repairing or upgrading your trailer's suspension system. The hangers and the shackle straps are made from a durable steel construction. The hangers are designed to be a weld-on installation.

Located at the top of each hanger you're going to notice two holes. These are for spot welds. This kit attached four leaf springs to your trailer frame. We're just going to go over the components that are included with the kit. You're going to get four 2-1/2-inch tall hangers, two for the front and two for the rear.

Two of them act as front hangers, the other two act as rear hangers. The 2-1/2-inch tall measurement is measured from the center of the 9/16-inch diameter hole to the top of the hanger. Then you're also going to get two 3-1/4-inch tall center hangers, 3-1/4-inch measurements taken from the center of the 9/16-inch diameter hole to the top of the hanger. The kit also comes with your equalizers. These are going to be two 7-3/4-inch long curved equalizers with 9/16-inch diameter center and end holes. The 7-3/4-inch measurement comes from measuring from the center of one outer hole to the center of the other outer hole, so center-on-center 7-3/4 inches.

You're going to get your shackle straps. You're going to get eight of these and they measure 2-5/8 of an inch long. That's measured from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole. Then you're also going to get the bolts and locknuts. You're going to get fourteen 3-inch long by 9/16-inch diameter shackle bolts and fourteen 9/16-inch diameter locknuts. The center hangers are going to suspend the equalizers from the trailer frame and at each end of the equalizers connects to one end of the leaf springs with the included hardware and shackle straps.

Then the other ends of the leaf springs connect directly to the front and rear hangers with the included hardware. That's going to do it for today's look at the tandem axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs.

i liked the time it took to get, i liked the ease at which it was to order, liked no shipping fees, i did not like that the spring plates were not for 1 3/4 or 2 in springs, the ones received were for 2 in to 2 1/8 in. i used the plates i had that allowed the u bolts ride much closer to springs. maybe thats the way they are made now. but if thats the case i would not buy them again. Also liked the prices but i thought i saw that the spring bushings came with the kit. It is very possible i was mistaken about that. All in all i would order from etrailer again.

I only needed the equalizers, shackles and bolts as mine were worn out. I already had new bushings left over from another project...... it was a great deal and a great fit. No problems, Fast Shipping and YES I will be using etrailer.com again!

by:

I Installed new suspension over a year ago and it has handled a lot of weight since. Still holds strong. Be sure to keep parts greased! And they will take you far.

Shipping Was Very Fast, Product Shipped was packaged Very Well, I Received Everything I Ordered. Prices Were Excellent Compared To Other Providers.
But The Best Thing of All Was Your Web Page, Prices are Right up Front and You

buy again as a matter of fact I did Just Place My Second Order. Thanks Again

Received in exactly the time they said. One part (the y-shaped pieces) were the wrong size, but I have the correct size from a previous order, so it all worked out in the end.

It would be nice if you can order a kit with just the pieces you need (I don't need the hangers but need all of the other pieces.) Then, I have to order the bushings separately.

replacement parts were an exact match and easy to install. follow up from etrailer was extra nice. I will be ordering from etrailer again.

Good value for the money. One of the
two springs had an eye so egg shaped that I could not get the bolt through, not happy about that. Ruined one sleeve and took 30 min + to fix. I had to buy a set of 4 sleeves to replace1 sleeve which meant atrip into town. Other than that I am happy with the product and the quick delivery and e trailers service.

by:

The equalizers work great. Came with everything I needed for a good price and very fast shipping.

by:

Everything that i expected with a great price and easier than going to several different local places to put together what i got from one place.

by:

Worked great. Good price.

by:

You have great serves and good prices

by:

Exactly what I ordered and needed

  • Using Taller Leaf Spring Hangers on 18 ft Utility Trailer
You can certainly use the taller hangers if you wish, but keep in mind that using the taller hanger (assuming you are installing the hangers in the same location as the old ones) could increase the deck height of your trailer by a small amount.

  • How Tight Should Shackle Bolts Be Tightened On Trailer
There should be enough free play in the shackles to allow them to move. There is no specific torque rating for shackle bolts. The first thing you should make sure of is that the bolts you use are long enough so that when installed you will have at least 2 threads protruding from the nut. Next, make sure that the nut you are using is a locking nut, so that it cannot work loose and fall off. If the bolt you are using has knurls at the bolt head you will want to tighten the bolt down until...

  • Is It Normal For One Shackle To Point Up and The Other Point Down After Replacing Equalizers?
The shackles on your equalizers should be pointing up when the trailer is under its weight on the ground, and will only point down like you mentioned when the trailer is in the air and the axles are off the ground. It is pretty common for one side of the equalizer to pop up before the other side and to get the other side to pop up you will want to pull the trailer over a bump. We have found a speed bump works the best if you have one near you.

  • How Tight Should Shackle Bolts Be On Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT7
When installing The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT7 there should just enough free play in the shackles to allow them move. You will want to tighten the bolt down until the knurls go through the shackle link or spring/equalizer hanger and the bolt head is flush. The nuts should be snug and not tight. I attached a review video link below.

  • Are Two Wrenches Needed When Tightening Shackle Bolts on Trailer Suspension.
Shackle bolts have a nut that needs to get held with a wrench or socket while tightening them down. If you didn't use a wrench or socket when you initially installed the shackle bolts you could go back now with one so that you can tighten them properly. If you are concerned about the condition of the knurls or the threads of the bolt you could remove the bolt and inspect it. Most likely they would be fine though.

  • Does Trailer Suspension 7-3/4 Inch Equalizer EQ-E1 Have a Weight Capacity
Equalizer # TREQE1 does not have a weight capacity itself. It isn't bearing much of the weight compared to other components in a trailer suspension set up. If you have a tandem axle trailer then you could potentially use kit # APT5, # APT3, # APT9, # APT8, # APT7, or # APT3HD. All of these kits have the 7-3/4 inch long equalizers. For a triple axle trailer you could use # APTT5 or # APTT3. All of the above kits also come with hangers. If you do not need hangers then you would need to...

  • Recommended Spring Hanger Kit for Load Rite Boat Trailer 3X5 Box Frame, 7200 lbs Gross Suspension
There are a lot of variables to consider when selecting a hanger kit. First you should select a kit that will accommodate the wheel and tire combination you are using. The # APT3 kit is a good choice for smaller wheel and tire combinations like 14 inch wheel and tire combinations and the # APT5 kit would be a good choice for 15 or 16 inch wheel and tire combinations since it provides a bit more clearance for tire height. The # APT7, # APT8 and # APT9 hanger kits are typically used as replacement...

  • Will Putting Axle In Backwards Cause Trailer Brakes To Not Function?
The reason your brakes are no longer functioning, is that they are actually directional with the front and rear pads being different. Since the axle is backwards meaning the brakes are backwards the brakes will not function. To fix this you will need to remove the axle and turn it around. As long as the shackle bolts are not rusted, you will have no issues reusing them. If they have any damage though I would go ahead and replace them for peace of mind. If you need a replacement we have...

  • Correct Equalizer Positioning For A Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
That does look slightly out of the ordinary. The equalizer should not be off to one side like that. Generally the equalizer will be more centered, and the shackles will form a "W" shape. I have included a picture with an example of how the equalizer and shackles should be positioned. Assuming this is all stock suspension, it looks like your leaf springs are too long. Perhaps they have flattened out over time, or they are overloaded. If so your springs will need to be replaced. We would...

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing for Tandem Axle Trailer Suspension with 26 Inch Springs
Thank you for providing the specs for the suspension components that you already have. Correct hanger spacing really depends on the components being used such as springs, hangers and equalizers. Most of the hanger spacing dimensions that we have are based on our preassembled kits, so we will use that as a foundation for your setup. First, I would either replace all of the front and rear hangers with 2-1/2 inch tall hangers like part # 115918 or replace just the center hangers with 2-1/2...

  • How to Decide Which Tandem Axle Trailer Hanger Kit to Use
Typically when building a tandem axle trailer I recommend using either the # APT3 or # APT5 Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit. These are the most common kits used for utility trailers and parts are readily available. The # APT5 kit is by far the most common because all the hangers are the same height and provide good tire clearance. There are a lot of variables when selecting a hanger kit. First you should select a kit that will accommodate the wheel and tire combination you are using. The...

  • Not Enough Wheel To Fender Clearance And Suspension Is Loose
Shackle straps and equalizers are intended to have a little play in them when installed correctly to allow the suspension to have free movement but your equalizer bolt should not really be turning in place. We do recommend no less than 4-1/2" inches of clearance from the top of your tire to the fender of your trailer to accommodate for suspension travel. If you are smelling burning rubber most likely the tire is rubbing and because you do not have enough clearance. The tires may be too...

  • How Tight Should Leaf Spring Shackle and Spring Eye Bolts Be
If the bolts for the shackle link and the leaf spring eye are too tight, the suspension won't articulate as it should. You want to run the bolt down tight, then back it off by a 1/4 turn, as you'd mentioned.
