Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Everything arrived on time and as expected. This was perfect replacement wheels and rims and was nice to have come w/tires pre-mounted. The added bonus to these wheels/tires was the better ride level to my trailer, as the 5th wheel trailer ride height was raised on my trailer do to wheel profile when hooked up to my F250 providing a much more level ride height and weight distribution on my axles. Win win for me.

by:

Delivered on time and were just what I needed to upgrade my trailer from 12 to 15 inch wheels. Love that they came mounted and ready to install. Also added a set of C.E. Smith pre galvanized fenders.

by:

Great! Bought three for my single axle travel trailer (one for spare). They bolt right on. Put 10K on them last year and about to order another pair of wheels and tires. Will rotate one of the new ones and run last year's spare this. Next year, I will just buy tires and a tire changer to mount them in rotation on the wheels I already have.

by:

I pull a 16 ft cargo trailer daily for my snack cake business. About 27,000 miles a year,I have never had a set of tires last this long. I purchased rim and tires feb of 2023 kept them rotated still have about 1/4 tread left. I usually go through at least 2 sets a year. I am getting ready to order another set of rims and tires move the older ones to spare cargo trailer. I never write reviews but these are worth telling others about

by:

Joshua was extremely helpful in ordering the correct tire size and load ratings. Delivery was fantastic and on time. And the tires and rims look great on our travel trailer. Will recommend etrailer to everyone!

by:

Excellent experience and great prices. Definitely will order again when it's time to replace all the tires. The only thing was I had to get a black wheel instead of the silver/gray that's on my trailer for the tire i wanted. It's a spare so no big issue, still 5 stars.

by:

Upgrading the tire/wheel package of a Grand Design Travel Trailer. Rims and tires were delivered quickly and I had them installed in less than an hour. The Westlake tire look great and will hopefully turn my GD trailer in a more capable backcountry trailer.

by:

Tire looks fine wheel was trashed one lug had major damaged from what i would guess was tire machine and they shipped it anyway.

Perfect replacement for stock cargo trailer wheels/tires. Arrived super fast and exactly what was described!

by:

This is an EXACT match as a spare tire for my dump trailer. Although the black wheel was out of stock, a sales rep offered to change it to a white rim (I declined). The tire was shipped in a heavy-duty box and arrived in prime condition. I couldn't be happier.

After one year, the tire is still looking great as a spare attached to the side of my dump trailer. I havent had to use it, so it looks pristine.

by:

The tires came promptly and look fine. I would urge you to go out and measure the spacing of your lug bolts. Directions are everywhere online, and it's easy. I didn't and had to get the tires remounted on my old wheels. The 5 on 4-1/2 is the most common size for trailers. Not a disaster, and I'll try to add to the review when I've got some miles on the tires

by:

After several blowouts with other tire brands, I ordered this tire. We pull the trailer on paved and dirt roads. While it’s not an off-road tire it manages well on dirt roads.

by:

I have about 1000 miles on these wheels and tires. They work fine and look good still.

by:

Good tires and very pleased. Just wish I had ordered them with silver rims. I believe they would've given a nicer appearance on a black trailer. Next time!!

by:

Ordered and on in less than 48 hrs. Wow !! Looks to be an exact replacement for my trailer

by:

Fast, free shipping and quality product at a great price ! What more could you ask for ? My wheel and tires package was shipped individually in its own box, well protected.

by:

This tire and wheel combo is exactly what i was looking for. Ive had them on my tandem axle enclosed trailer for a year now and have around 4000 miles on them. I recently pulled them off to rotate and found that they are wearing similarly. Etrailer customer service was prompt and easy to work with as i had an issue at the beginning with the powder coat on one of the wheels. Would definitely buy these again

by: 08/06/2022

As usual, exactly as advertised and a perfect fit, thanks to all at etralier, Dan

So far trouble free pulled it to Idaho from Atlanta and back with a 1000 lb load 5,250 mi very happy with purchase

by:

Ordering was easy somewhat. Order was processed almost instantly and shipping was quick. I have not used it as of yet, it was purchased so I would have a spare. The trailer I purchased was not equipped with one. I’ll update later if necessary when I use it.

I have used it while on a camping trip recently. Glad I made the purchase and had it on hand.

by:

Shipment packaged well and arrived quickly for free ground shipping. Reason for 3 stars instead of 5 was powder coat defects on all 4 rim stud holes. Cleaned up excess powder coat due to racking and touched up paint before installing to prevent chipping and rust.

by:

Haven’t put any miles on them yet, but delivery was lightning fast down to Florida. Arrived well packaged and in good shape. Will use etrailer again. They beat the prices from Tire Kingdom and Tires Plus by a good bit.

by:

The rims seem to be a lot weaker than the old ones I have damaged them both in a short time. I have owned this trailer for many years and have never had this problem before. On any other rim that we have had on the same trailer, we could clip a curb at low speed ( 1 mile per hour ) like turning a corner at an intersection where there is not much room and no problem when the trailer went over the curb. However with what we bought from you, that same thing bends the rim. That tells me that there is weak metal used in the rims and most likely from China. I contacted customer service about this to see if you have a better built rim and was told that you do not. I have another 16 foot trailer that is used to haul a Bobcat or a mini excavator that weighs in at about 7000lbs each, with the same size rims for over 20 years and have climbed over curbs on a regular basis and have never had one problem.

The other 12 foot trailer that had the rims bought from you has 1 riding lawn mower, 1 push mower, some weed eaters and other yard tools in it. The trailer itself is less than half the weight of my of my 16 footer and maybe 1000lbs of cargo. I am sorry for leaving an un favorable review but you need to investigate the quality of what you are buying.

Let me know if you find a better quality item and maybe we will continue to purchase from you.

Easy replacement option and look better than white wheels. After a year of daily use on an enclosed tool trailer they are holding up great

by:

Hello ordered trailer tires with rims. The price was very comparable may be a little bit less than getting them local. Looked for a load rating D instead of C that worked out for me also. Folks to good job with transportation and getting the product to my home. Thank you very much.

  • Recommended Hub and 14-15 Inch Wheel and Tire for Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension
It looks like you ordered the Timbren # ASR1200S02 which uses # L44649 bearings. I recommend using the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub for 2K Axles # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K which is designed for 13" to 15" wheels. You won't find 14" or 15" wheels that can use a 4 on 4 bolt pattern so you're definitely going to need a hub with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern like this one. I'm not entirely sure what your setup is like but you will need to make sure you have clearance for the larger tires. At a minimum...

We have no hubs whatsoever available for this combo let alone ones as specific as you are requesting. In order to add a idler hub with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern like item # AKIHUB-545-35-K you are going to have to replace your spindles with one of the following options: #84 Spindle for 3,500-lb...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Replacing ST215/75R14
Going with trailer tires with higher speed ratings will certainly help for long distances as they will withstand heat better at highway speeds. Typically the other things that kill trailer tires are under-inflation and overloading. Keep the tires inflated to their max PSI ratings at all times and that will help considerably. For your tire size the part # TTWTRTM2157514D would be a great option. It has a 2,200-lb max load at 65 psi capacity and a speed rating of 81 mph.

Then for a tire and wheel that is on a 15 inch wheel instead you'd want the part # AM32424 which is a ST205/75R15 mounted on a black wheel with a 5 lug bolt pattern.

  • Will The ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Black Mod Wheel Replace 255/45R18 Boat Mate Trailer?
The Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel # AM32424 may work for your 2015 Boat Mate tandem axle trailer but you will need to check a few things. First this wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern which you will need to ensure fits your hub. The tire itself is rated for up to 2,150lbs each or 8,600lbs for all 4 tires. You will need to ensure this is enough capacity for your boat and trailer. The ST205/75R15 is only 0.1" taller than your 255/45R18 while being...

  • Why Are Wheel Rims Rated For Less Than The Tires
The reason the weight capacity of all the 15" rims you were looking at stops at 2150lbs has to do with the bolt pattern. If you take a look at a higher bolt pattern like 6 on 5-1/2 you'll see the capacity increases because the weight can be distributed between more studs. Bolt patterns don't affect the fitment of the tire on the wheel rim so they could be used for both patterns and would need to be rated higher to match that higher rated wheel rim.
