Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I love the new tires...I put them on a galvanized boat trailer I bought in the mid 1990's, I have gone thru 3 sets of rims over the time as the white painted rims would pit...then rust. The other issue was they were only 4.8" x 8" tires but trailer had fenders to accommodate 12" tires. Don't know why I waited so long but purchased larger 4.8" x 12" tires with galvanized rims, what a difference. etrailer helped me select the needed tires and price was great compared to what local stores had, and no one locale had galvanized rims.

etrailers' prices are fantastic and had my 3 tires and rims in a few days, great turnaround time. Will see how the tires last as we are still in the depth of winter here in the northeast.

I use my trailer 2 to 4 times a month all year round and have put about 1200 miles on these tires. I am happy with these wheels and would recommend them.

These wheels are still holding up well and I would still give them 5 stars after two years.

by:

Excellent price and appears to be high quality. Needed a spare for my Kayak trailer and this fit the bill.

by:

I needed tires for my 5 x 8 trailer because the old tires were cracking on the sides. I priced out several companies and one of the larger discount stores wanted nearly double. I got a better deal buying 2 tires with wheels than if I had gone to a tire shop for just tire replacement. I’m very happy with the price, service and shipping time using etrailer. Thanks much!!

These tires are still working great. I use this trailer frequently and am happy with my tires from etrailer. Will definitely order from them again for tires and other parts. Thx

by:

Ordered 3 wheel and tire assemblies to replace my old ones on my trailer, one for as spare. After more than 10 days and back ordered after i ordered them. I get them and they have the wrong valve stems installed. These are load C trailer tires 90 psi. The rubber valve stem that came in them are 60 psi. So now these wheel and tire assemblies cant be used and are now not DOT compliant. My old trailer tires im replacing have metal valve stem which are DOT compliant for 90 psi. After 2 phone calls and a hour waiting to talk to someone. They agreed about the valve stem concern. But no call back with a resolution to the problem as promised. I called back a third time today to the persons extension and it went to voice mail! E-trailer this is a fail!

Replaced the 23 year old Kendra Load Star tires on my utility trailer. Went with the galvanized wheels as I think they'll resist rust better the the original white wheels. From a few feet away they
galvanized wheel almost looks like chrome!

Matches my new Triton PWC trailer OEM tire. Great price and shipped next day. Robust box package ensured it wasn’t damaged. Customer service was outstanding at communicating the progress of my order and shipping. I’m always impressed with etrailer!

by:

Easy ordering and fast delivery. All items were exactly as advertised. Have always had good service from etrailer.com.

by:

Good purchase. I up graded to a load C. My trailer doesn’t bounce as much.

by:

I’m very impressed on how fast my shipment came. I really like the tires and wheels. Thanks again. Great company to deal with.

by:

Super service. Fast delivery of trailer tires and rim. E trailer carried size and product item I had difficulty finding elsewhere.

by:

Love them looks awesome

by:

I am more than happy with this purchase.
The
price was unbeatable.
I feel much safer and secure towing my boat on the freeway at high speeds for long distances with these tires and wheels.
Shipping was extremely fast, and communication was excellent.
I highly recommend these as an upgrade to any smaller trailer.

Poor quality. Do not buy this tire!

by:

Etrailer has the best prices and fastest shipping I have ever found. Excellent company.

by:

Tires are exactly as specified.Rims are a little "rough".The rims have discoloration on them and what looks like spots where the welding was done
poorly.

by:

Wheel and tire fit perfectly. Runs great down the road. One of my old tires was bouncing a lot (I could see it in my mirror) and the treads eventually wore out. No local tire store would balance a 12" trailer tire/wheel.

The guides and advice on this site take the stress out of ordering online.

Long term review will have to take place later :-)

Just great. Over a year of hauling household furniture and building materials through 500 mile round trips twice a month during all weather conditions...snow, sleet, rain, hot days and nights, put these tires to the test. Never leaked air, no rust in the galvanization, tread wear is even.

by:

Blew out a tire a Saturday. Ordered two new ones on etrailer.com Sunday. They arrived with free shipping Thursday. Back on the road, the following Saturday. Fast, easy, affordable, and product as described. What more can you ask for! Thanks

by:

Items received as promised. Appear to be what I was looking for. Won't be able to try them until this spring so can't comment on how well they perform.

Have used the tires all year and they have worked flawlessly. Would buy them again.

by:

They are for 2 utility trailers I own. Right now with the weather so bad they are leaning up against the wall at the carport door. Thanks so much for the fast delivery.

by:

I got this as a spare for my jet ski trailer (used for a kayak). Its a good value and fit perfectly. Shipping was very fast from eTrailer as it usually is.

by:

Exactly what the trailer originally came with. They have been great and I use near salt water.
etrailer shipped this really quick A+

by:

Great customer service. It’s refreshing to follow the product I buy through the entire picking, packaging and shipping process. It arrived fast and in excellent condition and a follow up email ensuring I was taken care of just to top it all off. As long as etrailer does business this way, I’ll be a customer. Awesome job!

by:

Tires appear OK; however, galvanization on all three wheels poorly applied, flawed and unsightly.

by:

Product exactly as advertised. Good price, and delivered in very timely manner.

  • Can Tire Pressure be Lowered on Motorcycle Trailer to Provide a Better Ride
You always want to keep your trailer tires psi set to what is recommended. If the psi is higher or lower then the tire will not perform as the manufacturer states. For instance, the Kenda # AM30670 is rated for 990 lbs at 90 psi. If we were to deflate the tires at all then the 990 lbs capacity that Kenda says the tire can handle will not be the case anymore. Underinflated tires are more prone to overheating and tire failure as well. I strongly advise against lowering the psi.

  • Troubleshooting Tire Wear Down Middle of Tread on Trailer
Generally speaking, a trailer tire will wear in the middle of the tread when it is over-inflated, however that does not appear to be the case with the tires on your trailer. With that being said, I do not recommend lowering the pressure on the tires to below the maximum psi recommended on the sidewall. Doing this will essentially lower the tire's load capacity to an unknown number, which may lead to you overloading them and causing further damage to the tires and trailer. A trailer tire...

If you are absolutely certain that your trailer when loaded would not exceed 2,100 lbs then you wouldn't need to worry as you should be fine. I would strongly recommend you keep your tires inflated to their maximum psi though.
